Emotional Hazards with Non-Interpersonal Communications
As critical as individual behavior impacts society, there are hazards with the overuse of technology when applied to how youths communicate to one another and those around them. In 2012, it was noted by the Pew Research Center how adolescents greatly prefer instant messaging, otherwise known as texting, with 75% admitted using texts over other digital communication like the telephone and electronic mail (Swick & Jellinek, 2014). Without any visual interpretation of non-verbal behavior or tone when using text messages, it raises a concern with adults on how adolescents use this form of digital dialogue.

Baker and Carreño (2016) wanted to expose through a qualitative study how the overuse of technology influences irrational behaviors and violence within the school-age population. The study focused on how social programs are employed at different points in a relationship, sharing experiences through focus groups, and how each gender differs from the use of technology. The sample size was comprised of 39 adolescents from multiple organizations throughout various Hawaiian communities, forming eight focus groups with four groups being boys and four with girls. Authors analyzed the 388 pages of transcripts from the focus groups to identify trends, and concluded how the technology was used as a leash to their relationships to check on and make sure their partner was not cheating on them. Individual comments helped show how status updates on Facebook would signify starts and endings to relationships, and partners would become jealous because their counterparts would be texting members of the opposite sex. The results of the study showed how texting became the primary means of communication versus talking, and also identified how “technology use exacerbated feelings of jealousy, which led to discord and violence between the couple” (Baker & Carreño, 2016, p. 316). Younger adults around the globe are growing up in a world filled with media in different kinds of shapes and forms(Brown, 2006). It is said to be that people are able to find partners independent of where they live and will be able to maintain a healthy relationship. This is because now people are able to share and communicate everything about their lives instantly. For example, music, videos, photos and other types of communication are easily available to the average person. (Herlein & Piercy, 2008). Society turns to technology these days to communicate because it gives them a sense of control over their social lives. Madell & Muncer, 2007). For example, when a person receives a text message. They can think for as long as they want to how they are going to reply back. Being able to think carefully is something digital communication has over physical. Sometimes we can say things that we did not mean due to being under pressure or reading body language. Texting someone can also have an impact on relationships with others. A study done showed that adults that are in a romantic relationship who uses texting to communicate with each other are more likely to have a better quality relationship (Coyne, Stockdale, Busby, Iverson, & Grant,

In a recent study conducted by Charlene K. Baker and Patricia K. Carreno, 39 high school aged adolescents were asked about their past relationships over a year’s span. All of these adolescents had experienced some kind of descent in each of their relationships. This study also shows the immense aspiration of adolescents to become involved in a romantic relationship. “Technology use among adolescents has added to this complexity as a growing number of adolescents are initiating relationships and communicating with their partners ‘online’” (Baker, 308). All of the results from this study show that these adolescents also used social media or other technology to initiate the breakup or was the main cause of
Years of research show that texting is leading to an increase in social awkwardness in teens and children. “Nini Halkett has taught history there for two decades. As her students are increasingly immersed in texting, Halkett also finds them increasingly shy and awkward in person.” (Jennifer Ludden’s article “Teen Texting Soars; Will Social Skills Suffer?” paragraph 14). With a majority of teens feeling more at ease texting each other, this can and will lead to

“According to 2014 data from Pew Research, 90 percent of American adults carry a mobile phone and more than 58 percent of people carry smartphones that offer not only voice and text communication, but also internet, email, and social media access.” Mobile Devices Are Detrimental to Personal Relationships from the point of view of Mobile Devices on Personal Relationships. Whether it is checking your phone at the dinner table, or googling a math question, technology becomes a world, easy to be sucked into. Every day we turn to technology to fix our problems or to ease our mind, but why are we so obsessed with such a time sucking thing? It is safe to say, as a society we rely too much on technology because we are too obsessed with

To function effectively in today's society people must communicate with one another. Yet for some individuals communication experiences are so unrewarding that they either consciously or unconsciously avoid situations where communication is required. (McCroskey & Richmond, 1979) The term communication apprehension' was coined by James McCroskey (1976a) and is defined as "an individual's level of fear or anxiety associated with either real or anticipated communication with another person or persons" (McCroskey, 1984). In the last two decades communication apprehension and related constructs, such as reticence and unwillingness to communicate, have received extensive research and theoretical attention by scholars in communication and

Prevention is essential in addressing teen dating violence. Teen dating violence has significant long-term and short-term effects on a teenager’s physical and mental health (Korchmaros et al., 2013). Teenagers are in a vulnerable time in their lives as their experiences set behavior patterns that they will carry with them as they transition into young adulthood. The integration of technology in the lives of teenagers has provided new tools for perpetrators to abuse their partner. Yet, teenagers are unable to identify these key factors because adults and parents minimize the impact a dating relationship can have at a young age. Technology is a danger and a threat to future adult relationships these teenagers will have because of the minimization
The use of cell phones has become more and more prevalent throughout the years, and has become the newest and fastest way of connecting and communicating with peers and friends in the 21st century. Students everywhere communicate with others through texting. “On college campuses, as over 97% of college students own a cell phone. (Hudson, Bliss, Fetro, 1)” Cell phones are the new way that adults, teens, students, and often children use to communicate with others. Since texting was first used in the late 90’s, it has worked its way up to one of the most popular ways to interact with others. Student’s texting does not only have impacts on the phone bill, but has positive influences on vocabulary, literacy, and social life.
Text messaging and instant messaging have become so widely used by teens that teachers have noticed a drastic change in students’ literacy. This change is constantly debated on whether texting is hindering the younger generations’ developing minds or if it is opening teenagers to a whole new realm of communication in our technologically advancing times. Research shows that texting is detrimental to the literacy of a developing teenager.
Since the technological phenomenon towards the end of the 20th century, text messaging has been widely used by cellphone users, specifically teenagers, in order to get their conversations across easier and quicker in a very convenient way. In the modern technology world, people have become so accustomed to the idea of
Many people have been broken-hearted because of online dating. Seventy-five percent of teens/adolescents text every day (Baker, 2015). When teenagers text their friends, they text their friend’s friends and they get to know one another through other people. Friends can think that And, cyber dating abuse among teens to twelve year olds was thirty-one and a half percent. There was approximately twenty-six percent cyber dating abuse between twelve to eighteen year olds (Wright, 2015).This means technology is overruling relationships. When there are increasing percentages in teens/adolescents using technology then, there is a lot of violent
The article presents the problem with communication with lots of research that has been done in past years. The research data presented was mostly accurate throughout the essay. Another article written by Angle, Moscaritolo state that, “teens sends and receive 60 texts message a day, up from 50 in 2009…” so as the years go by there has been an increase in the use of smartphones. We can be in a family meeting, but more often will find out that teens prefer to “talk” to you by text than having face-to-face
