After many mixtapes and nearing the edge of household name status, Maryland rapper Logic drops his first album. In this album is a song titled Gang Related. This song tells the story of what environment and household he grew up in. His brother is in a gang and sells cocaine to his father in front of him. Logic's mother is in an out of mental institutions, all the while logic is growing up and trying not to get shot when he walks outside. With drugs and gangs all around him, it is quite amazing that he got out and become a famous rapper. Gang Related also has a core message of stopping the violence, which leads to a question, is this song about his story or a message about ending the violence?
The documentary Crips and Bloods: Made in America (2008) focuses on conditions and causes of gang violence in Los Angeles, California, as well as the history and background of the main gangs that reside there. The information in the film is compiled from interviews of past and present members of the Crips and Bloods, which are the two main gangs that contribute to the violence in the area. The interviewees explain how the gangs work and the conditions under which these people live daily. There can be parallels drawn from the film to Elijah Anderson’s article titled “The Code of the Streets”, published in 1994, that discusses violence in terms of gang and criminal activity.
The Gangster Disciples are still an active group in the United States (Mallory, 2012). There are members of the group in over 35 states and 70 U.S. cities (Mallory, 2012). Nearly 20,000 members reside in the city of Chicago, where the FBI considers this group a “major organized crime group” (Mallory, 2012, p. 208). The Gangster Disciples were formed after the death of the group’s original leaders, David Barksdale (Mallory, 2012). A young man who was already a member of the group, Larry Hoover become the new leader of the Gangster Disciples because he was a person that Barksdale watched over (Mallory, 2012). After his death, the group split into the Black Disciples and the Gangster Disciples (Mallory, 2012). The group became prone to violence
The documentary Crips and the Bloods: Made in America tells the dramatic story of the perpetual gang violence that runs the streets of Los Angeles, California. Gaining an inside look at how and why this violence is continued, the video focuses on the individuals that are affected by the gangs. Families are torn apart due to endless murders, children are taught to hate and act violently towards their neighbors, and people lose their soul to the gangs that they call their families. Of course every person must make a choice to engage in this sort of life, but sometimes these people are put into situations where there are no other options. In order to further think about what has caused and maintained the violence in the LA area, we can look towards Agnew’s General Strain Theory and the Labeling Theory.
Throughout recent years legal actions have been taken on behalf of the Australian States and Territories, in an attempt to decrease the amount of organised crimes committed by Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs (OMCGs). The introduction of organised crime legislations in South Australia, New South Whales and Queensland have all caused controversy within the legal profession, as many argue that existing crime legislations and specialised police task forces are sufficient enough. Both legal and non-legal actions have been taken against this issue, however the question still stands whether or not these legislations are effective.
The book, Gang Life in Two Cities by Robert J. Durán to put simply is about the gang life in Denver, CO and Ogden, UT. Durán wrote this book to share his research findings. When Durán had to move to Huntsville, UT (but went to school in Ogden) he found himself immersed in an area where gangs were becoming popular. Durán, an ex-gang member himself was curious on how and why gangs operate. He found this research important, because he saw firsthand how society had a role in the formation of gangs. Duran felt that it needed to be brought to light what he witnessed while being a gang member himself and when he conducted his research.
The Black Guerilla Family gang originated in the California prison systems in the 1960s and 30 years later eventually made its way to the prison systems of Maryland and onto the streets of Baltimore City and Howard County. This organization is considered among the most powerful gangs in the state, and has been known for its criminal activities in and outside of correctional facilities. The Black Guerilla Family gang increased its strength through numbers as they heavily recruited during the inflow of criminals as they were being processed into the detention centers and facilities. It was reported that nearly one-third of more than 3,000 identified gang members within the system were affiliated with the Black Guerrilla Family, and they even
While the Ms-13 gang members continue to grow through the United Stated becoming a great influence in almost every state, they were becoming more focused on recruiting the younger populations more than ever. At the same time, law enforcement and government officials became aware of the dangers these individual brought into cities and communities. They realize these violent criminal acts were causing serious problems and decided to take action. In 2004, in order to get a handle on this increasing growth of individuals as well as the vicious acts of violence, the FBI put together the MS-13 National Gang Task Force. The goal of this task force would be to put together resources from jurisdictions on the federal level that would be able to investigate

The Concentrated Community Gang Enforcement Program, also known as the Flying Squad, focused on patrol and elimination missions in areas with serious gang problems. The available resources were split into 3 groups. One group focused on long term conspiracy. The second group focused on street gangs and the third group focused on police deployment. The following organizations and events are a result of this resource distribution. The Chicago’s Alternative Policing Strategy expanded resources to target beat level gang problems. The Strategic Inspections Task Force focused on neighborhood concerns such as regulatory code enforcement of abandoned buildings associated with gangs. The Chicago Anti-Gun Enforcement Program sought to reduce illegal

In Crips and the Bloods we see multiple examples of labels continuing crime. First off, most of the children born in this area are black and poor. Already they are labeled and stereotyped as being dangerous to communities, useless to society, and destined for failure. One man says “I grew up in the hood, I was born in the hood, I was raised in the hood, and I’m going to die in the hood. I didn’t choose my destiny, my destination chose me” (Peralta, 2008). This phrase demonstrates the power of a label. He was born into a community of violence and gangs and there is no way for him to escape it. Because he was born into this particular setting, this man now considers himself a person from “the hood,” he behaves in ways that are congruent with society’s idea of what some from the “hood” would behave like. In order to uphold his label, the viewer notices that this man dresses and speaks in a manner that is consistent with the “hood” label. Of course these things are not criminal, but this example demonstrates the unescapable power of a label.
