I am Amanda Selich, 27 years old, and have been living in San Francisco for roughly 10 years. I grew up in the East Bay with my 3 siblings and was raised by a single father. Much of my childhood was spent taking care of my younger siblings. This responsibility was so demanding I was forced to drop out of high school and become their “surrogate mother”. However at the age of 24 I was able to get my GED and finally attend college. In fact this past May I graduated from City College of San Francisco with highest honors in Science and Math.

The career that I plan on pursing would hands down have to be Certified Nursing Assistant. Some people may wonder why I decided to settle with this profession so I guess we’ll just have to take a walk down memory lane. Ever since I was a little girl I love watching nurses work. I never really realized how much I wanted to be a Certified Nursing Assistant until my grandmother took sick at home she had home aids come and see her routinely. I watched my grandmother struggle with her health issues and I also watched how caring and proficient the nurses were towards my grandmother. There are many different fields to choose from while working as a Registered Nurse. “Registered nurses work in hospitals, physicians' offices, home healthcare services, and nursing care facilities. Others work in correctional facilities, schools, or serve in the military.” (bls.gov). You can also specialize in a specific type of nursing by seeking employment in that individual line of work or by taking a certification test. “The Nursing2011 Salary Survey reports that nurses certified in a specialty earn an average of $10,200 per year more than nurses who are not.” (pncb.org). If you choose to go further with your education you can continue past a bachelor’s degree and get a master’s degree becoming a nurse practitioner.

Nursing is the most trusted and reliable profession leading in the transformation of healthcare. “Nursing helps to promote, protect, and optimization of health and abilities to prevention of illness and injury, facilitation of healing, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, groups, communities and populations” (American Nursing Association, 2017). Nursing offered careers for both men and women and it is the profession that provides healthcare everywhere. Society has great expectations for this profession. Caregivers are one the reasons why nursing is seen as the engine room of healthcare system. In the quest to provide preventive and restorative measures. There are three basic career guides which are; education, job opportunities, and salary.

In an article written by six professional nurses with degrees spreading across varying fields of nursing, portfolio development was found to be crucial to understanding competencies possessed by professionals that would be difficult to assess by traditional methods like accrediting (Byrne et al., 2007). Portfolios are very flexible, differing compilations of each individual’s “concrete or abstract reflections of personal growth and development” (Byrne et al., 2007). Portfolios offer a deeper, more substantial look at the skills one possesses.

The orientation process for new hires lasts six weeks. The new nurse attends nursing orientation for one week and then is assign a preceptor on the unit for each shift. The DPCS introduces the new employee to their preceptor. This nurse works three weeks on the day shift, one week on the evening shift and one week on the night shift working with both medically acute rehabilitation patients and surgical patients. Nurses receive extra days of their orientation with patients that the nurse has limited clinical experience such as a nurse with postoperative experience will work more with the medically acute rehabilitation patients to practice new skills. For new graduates their orientation is individualize and can last from 8-16 weeks.

I want to be a nurse practitioner because I really like helping elderly and anyone really. Nurse practitioners get a lot of money. Nurse practitioners help a lot by drawing and giving blood.

The concept of nurse residency programs is not by any means a new concept. Programs have been grounded on Benner’s theory of novice to expert. Benner established the notation that nurses develop skills and understanding of job skills over time through an education also with hands on experiences. She noted a nurse passes through five levels of proficiency: novice, advanced beginner, competent, proficient, and expert and was generally reached only after years of gaining experience as a practicing nurse. A nurse residency can facilitate new nurse graduates to transition smoothly through the levels and sometimes even more quickly. As a new graduate a nurse residency program is very appealing, not only does it help mentor you through novice period but also helps develop competent nurses for the organization.

Now that I am a senior at Hope High, I want to become a Nurse. I love the work that Nurses do in the medical field. I am full of laughter and smile. When someone is in need a hand I tend to help them with my best ability.

The future is only secured if we make the right decision in terms of career choice. Did you know that there are thousands of job opportunities for certified nurse anesthetist? Indeed a career in this field will secure your future even in the mist of the dwindling US economy.

One of the challenges posed by the IOM in its report is that nurses “practice to the full extent of their education and training” (IOM, 2010, para. 4). The transformation of the health care system, first and foremost, would only be realized if “competent professionals understand their own limitations and are able to provide safe care autonomously according to defined responsibilities, professional standards, education and qualifications” (Lau, Cross, Moss, Campbell, De Castro, & Oxley, 2013, p. 656). Studies have shown that not all organizations support practice nursing with “competency standards, a well-defined role, a career pathway, and a professional organization” (Lau, et al., 2013, p. 656). For this research paper, the career field that was chosen was ‘pediatric nursing’. Many people would choose this particular career for their love of wellness and of people. Many just love seeing the smile on children’s faces when they say that they feel so much better. People would also choose this career path because of some lifelong skill of dealing with adolescents and children, possibly being an elder child, which is a very important quality of pediatric nurses. Overall, when most people know and feel that someone is well and is happy, it would just make them so glad that they’ve done something to help them in their path to becoming happy and healthy again.

I experience two great learning opportunities, where my preceptor helped me understand how population requires unique care, different from inpatient nursing. The first example was of a mother who brings her disable son to the clinic and was having problems with the visiting nurse not showing up to the appointments on time. The mother explained that she works fulltime, attend school and do not have a home health aide all day. Her son is disable and so is her husband. When she provides the time for the visiting nurse to come to the house, she must be on time and not consistently late. As she is unable to sit around waiting to open the door, as the nurse is constantly late and keeps missing the scheduled time. The now causes the mother to have

Nursing is just a way you can show love, care, and help towards people you might not even know but you will get the wonderful chance of meeting them. A nurse has so many different ways of showing kindness towards everyone and it's great to see people get better because of them. I will continue my college education at South Piedmont Community College to get my degree in nursing. While trying to get the rest of my education of a nursing degree I will get a part time job at the hospital until I can get my full time job as a nurse. Also having a job outside of the hospital would be nice to help pay for my debt and other everyday

I believe that nursing is both and art and a science consisting of psychosocial and biological sciences that work together to continually improve the health care field. I believe that with the knowledge and clinical experience from the TVCC ADN program I will be able to provide the best care possible to the people in the community. As a nurse it is important to carry the attributes of being caring, compassionate, understanding, non judgmental, realistic, open-minded, honest, ethical, and moral. I also feel that it is important to maintain sensitivity to all cultures when providing care.
