Nursing Career Progression

Registered nurses work alongside physicians providing patient care in a variety of ways. A few examples of what nurses are responsible for include: administering medications, tracking patient’s vital signs, helping to diagnose and properly treat patient aliments and educating the patient and their family on their condition and the course of treatment. Depending on what area of medicine a nurse works in will determine more generalized and specific duties and responsibilities. There are many different areas a nurse may work in. Some areas include: obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, emergency room, and many more. Nurses can work in a variety of settings, these can include: hospitals, urgent cares, doctors office, nursing homes and home health.

A career trajectory is a formalized plan for a successful transition into a career path that an individual has chosen. Likewise, the goal of nursing is to improve health through the advancement of knowledge therefore, improving the safety, effectiveness, and the access for healthcare. In combining these two definitions, a career trajectory in nursing advancement is to allow for clarity of direction and expected outcomes in a career by meeting the goals to advance in the healthcare field. In order to build a successful career as an advanced practitioner an individual must consider the requirements of the position and make strategic decisions in order to facilitate progression towards this goal (Feetham & Doering, 2015).

Registered nurses have several duties and responsibilities that can range depending on the organization that they work for. Registered Nurse’s may be employed in physicians' offices, schools, hospitals, assisted living facilities, nursing homes, clinics, and even in prison settings. They are responsible to provide direct care to patients that are done under the order and supervision of a licensed health professional. The licensed healthcare professionals include physicians, nurse practitioners or physician's assistants. The daily actions of an RN may include receiving a patient assignment, assessment of each patient, administering medications, attending to patient needs, facilitating patient, assisting the physician with bedside procedures, monitoring laboratory results, and monitoring for any changes in condition. While on the job they might also encounter heavy lifting of patients, exposure to bodily fluids, and large amounts of time on feet. The amounts of hours they work depend on where they work. For example, hospital-based nurses mostly work a total of 3 twelve-hour shifts per week while a office-based nurse usually works 5 days a week for a total of 40 hours.

A nursing theory allows the nursing profession to define and differentiate nursing care practice from other professional disciplines. The work of Patricia Benner has been crucial in setting a stage to standardize education and career progression for the nursing profession. The nursing care practice has been changing exponentially since the development of the theory From Novice to Expert. It has enabled facilities across the nation to achieve a higher level of patient care due to its ability to identify the needs of each of the stages of a professional nurse’s career progression.

Since I was in the 10th grade, I knew I wanted to pursue my education at Mount Vernon Nazarene University for nursing. Furthermore, my first college visit on MVNYOU day confirmed my decision. I greatly treasure the close knit community and the Christian based morals. To get a head start on my journey, my sophomore year I applied and was accepted into the Career and Technology Education Center of Licking County for Clinical Care (C-TEC), a nursing based program. In the duration of my last two years of high school, instead of simply graduating with my diploma, I graduated with my STNA, CET, CPT, CPCT, and my CPhT. As far as I remember I would always play nurse with my siblings and make them feel better. When my parents would take me to the store to pick up a toy, I always picked band-aids and pretend doctor kit. My long-term career is becoming a Registered Nurse, and my short-term career is the career I currently have as a Licensed Practical Nurse.

I have an Associate Degree in nursing from Queensborough Community College. I had a Bachelor in Environmental Engineering already and I was looking for the fastest and most inexpensive way to become a nurse when I started the nursing program at Queensborough Community College. When I graduated from the nursing school, I thought that ADN would be enough to be a nurse and I could start working as soon as I got the license. Soon after passing the board, I started realized that it was very hard to find any job as a newly graduated nurse with ADN. I got pieces of advice from professors and decided to go to Molloy College to study Family Nurse Practitioner. After three courses there, even though it would be the fastest way to be an FNP with other Bachelor degree, I realized that I had no experience to share in as a nurse. I sat down and seriously thought about what I like to do.

A professional career as a registered nurse can be very rewarding, but it entitles hard work and dedication. The main purpose of a registered nurse is to provide care, education, and support to their patients. Their responsibilities mainly depend on the type of file they work in. For example, an emergency nurses, labor and delivery nurses, and school nurses each have specific duties they need to perform in accordance to their job. Though, in general, Registered Nursing responsibilities are very similar.

I am currently in my second year of studies at Delaware County Community College. My major is Science for the Health Professions and my goal is to be enrolled in Thomas Jefferson University's Nursing Program by Fall 2017. My mother is currently a Registered Nurse. She has inspired me to fulfill this career and I aim to surpass her success and achieve my Masters Degree in Nursing rather than an Associate's. However, this past year has proven to be the most difficult in my efforts of achieving this dream of mine.

I have been a student at Leon high school since Pre-k year and in a couple of months I will be graduating from here. After graduation I plan to attend Tyler Junior College in hope of earning an associate’s degree in nursing as a licensed vocation nurse (LVN). After receiving my degree I would like to work at a clinic or the hospital in Tyler or Dallas. To help me achieve this goal I have prepared myself by taking three dual credit classes this year and a nursing class as a certified nurse’s assistant(CNA). In my nursing class I have complete hours in the classroom and certain hours working on the floor at Groesbeck LTC. I am 38 years old and I have decided to return to college after being out of school for twenty years. I have two amazing children, Sydni , 11- years- old and Logan, 9- years- old. My husband Steven and I have been happily married for 17 years. I am currently employed at a family practice doctor’s office in Opelousas, LA., for which I have been working for the past 13 years. My job entitles that I do mostly nursing duties such as taking vital signs, minor procedures, telephone triages, and general patient care, and has inspired me to become a Registered Nurse. They have big responsibilities, like making sure the patients get their right medicine, and by having the right treatment they need. My educational goals are to receive my Associates Degree in Nursing at Shelton State Community College so that I can work as a Registered Nurse. After working as a Registered Nurse for at least two-years, I plan on returning to school to obtain my bachelor’s Degree in Nursing. Becoming a Nurse is more of a calling then just a job or a career for me. I have worked in the healthcare field as a Certified Nursing Assistant since I was eighteen years old.
