In today's growing society, informatics plays a significant role in healthcare that allows for the evolving role of Telemedicine. This type of technological innovation has been created to provide health services to a distant population without having to visit the healthcare facility. There are a variety of programs that have been designed to help manage chronic conditions by gathering and transmitting data to health professionals to evaluate and be able to diagnose and treat chronic health conditions. This type of technology includes, clinical and non- clinical facets of care. Non-clinically, telehealth can be widely used to educate the community and healthcare professionals. An example of this type of education can be through computer-animated …show more content…
Technology may have an influence on nursing and patient care and a disadvantage to care, but as healthcare professionals, patient care comes first and ethically nurses are bound to an oath to be advocates and protect patients as well as keeping patient privacy. The influence of technology as a communicating tool to share health information about diseases to the public and among healthcare providers can be beneficial for future ways to practice (Korhonen, Nordman, & Eriksson, …show more content…
For example, Miami children's hospital also known as Nicklaus children's hospital currently offers telehealth services to their patients and are aiming to market and expand their services worldwide (Arello, 2014). Some challenges faced with this new technology are to be able to trust that adequate care will be provided by the healthcare organization involved. The advancements in technology to treat some chronic healthcare conditions can help empower patients to be aware of their health status and to be able to monitor their health while communicating with a healthcare professional when needed. As a nurse practitioner, the advancements in technology can allow for close monitoring of patient's condition and the ability to evaluate effectiveness by comparing and seeing overall health outcome and
Telehealth is an innovative approach to health care that is rapidly expanding in all areas of patient care. It has been shown to be cost effective and is rapidly being integrated into everyday practices from clinics, hospitals, court systems, school systems and even the local drug store.
The purpose of this paper is to discuss how technology has impacted the health care delivery system. Health care technology is advancing at an increasingly rapid rate in the United States, and globally. Patients and providers are witnessing these changes through the use of telehealth, and telemedicine applications. Telehealth, and telemedicine are often used interchangeably, however there is a difference between the two applications. Telehealth is the use of technology to deliver health care, health information, or health education at a distance (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, n.d.).
The nurse can utilize home telehealth monitoring to enhance the patient experience by providing medical care, treatments, education and support in the convenience of the family home. McGonigle & Mastrian found, “According to regular surveys conducted by the AARP (1996), more than
The benefits of telehealth consultations are immeasurable; clients are able to access a knowledgeable health care professional and receive a telephone triage/assessment and recommendations. This allows the patient to have immediate access to good health advice and quicker solutions. Telemedicine is one of the many vehicles of telehealth; for example, the cardiologist orders an outpatient Holter Monitor trial to evaluate arrhythmias. The technician calls the patient at the sign of any abnormal rhythm and investigate the activity performed when the reading fluctuation then the reported is communicated to the cardiologist. If warranted, the cardiology staff will contact the patient with instructions schedule an immediate appointment. Telehealth services resources would benefit the client in this next example, an individual’s come in for a sick visit expecting a prescription to be written for their illness; they receive informative instructions because of the nature of the
In the face of the limits of traditional support, it is necessary not only to redesign an organization, but to a paradigm shift that allows the socio-health performance to be efficiently and sustainably distributed to the widest possible audience. Digital technologies applied to healthcare and healthcare systems can increase their efficiency, improve their quality of life and give innovative impetus to healthcare markets. Telemedicine services can therefore be assimilated to any diagnostic / therapeutic health service. However, telemedicine performance does not replace traditional healthcare performance in the personal-patient relationship, but integrates it to improve its effectiveness, efficiency and appropriateness.
Upgrading our documentation to information and informatics comes with many advantages for the health care team to improve quality and safe ty improvement. Also, the use of technology such as telehealth, telenursing and videoconferencing are on the rise, and will be embedded into our communities and nursing organizations so that we can reach people around the country who do not have accessibility quality health care. Using technology to educate patients and families about credible websites, and how to search for pertinent information that is relevant to his or her health is a priority. The goal is to eliminate unnecessary emergency rooms visits. These actions foster communication and minimize anxiety
Telehealth has been a large topic of debate in recent years because of the economic, political, and regulatory points of view. In deciding outcomes in these areas, it is the responsibility of all healthcare professions to identify information gaps in order to come to the more rational and beneficial conclusion about telehealth (Grace, 2014). Economically, there are concerns regarding the access and affordability of telehealth equipment. At the same time, telehealth is being adapted in ways to be utilized with technological devices that many individuals already have access to like telephones, cellular phones, and personal computers/laptops. Telehealth can positively impact both clients and providers by increasing access to care and reducing the time and costs associated with traveling for health care (Allen, Aylott, Loyola, Moric, & Saffarek, 2015). As telehealth develops technological devices can be made more affordable and can be covered by insurance policies (Thomas et al., 2014). Many nurses functioning as case managers can help provide the tools and resources individuals require to manage their health.
Tomika, a co-worker is excited about her new job working for an agency that installs tele-monitoring equipment into the homes of people with chronic illnesses. She will monitor the patients using the equipment with the goal of detecting problems before these patients are readmitted to the hospital. A job in telenursing enables the nurse to work from home assessing and interacting with her patients through videoconferencing. According to a scholarly journal of the American Nurses of Association, there has been an escalation in deployment of remote technology to enhance health care, and an increasing acceptance of these technologies. There are also legal and regulatory questions pertaining to the provision of healthcare using these technologies
Currently, the DVAMC’s telehealth department is fully staffed with ten nursing coordinators that manage a variety of chronic diseases and health promotion topics such as smoking cessation and weight loss. The telemedicine service includes: TeleRetinal, TeleMental Health, TeleDermatology. Furthermore, educating the staff and patients about the department’s services is an established activity delegated to the telehealth coordinators as well as marketing all the service to other medical staff. In addition, the technology as well as the reports to be utilize to measure the outcomes of the project are existing, functioning systems within the facility. Therefore, there will be no additional cost associated with purchasing equipment nor manhours to implement this project.
A key element used to drive the nursing practice forward is the ability to adapt and incorporate new ideas and technologies with an open mind, and the use of a scientific approach. According to (HRSA, 2015) telehealth is the use of electronic information and telecommunications technologies to support long-distance clinical health care, patient and professional health-related education, public health and health administration. Technologies include video conferencing, the internet, store-and-forward imaging, streaming media, and terrestrial and wireless communications. When conducting research into what types of telehealth operations will be successful and beneficial one must look into certain areas of telehealth such as; right equipment
Telehealth is the monitoring via remote exchange of physiological data between a patient at home and health care professionals at hospitals or clinics to assist with diagnosis and treatment. As our society ages and health care costs increase, government and private insurance payers are seeking technological interventions. Technological solutions may provide high quality healthcare services at a distance, utilize professional resources more effectively, and enable elderly and ill patients to remain in their own homes. Patients may experience decreased hospitalization and urgent care settings, and out of home care may not be required as the patient is monitored at home. However, no study has been able to prove telehealth
What is telehealth? Telehealth is the information and communication technology which delivers health services over distances. This information includes Internet or web-based ‘e-health’ and video-based applications which can be delivered in real-time or store-and-forward mode.
