During the Nursing Issues: Global Health class, I was given an opportunity to work ten hours with a charitable organization to provide clothing and food for the needy. Being raised as a Sikh, charity holds an important place in my life. Charity is an important part of Sikh beliefs as we believe that equality, compassion and humanity are essential for a spiritual life. I was able to complete my service hours through Sikh temple located in El Sobrante. Sikh temples across the world are dedicated and determined to help underprivileged and homeless people. The Sikh temple of El Sobrante participates in various charitable work, such as providing nutritious diets, collecting food and clothing for the needy people. During my ten hours, I was fortunate to collect food and distribute it to those in need. Many people at the Sikh temple donate food such as wheat flour, lentils, rice, fruits, vegetables and canned goods. My job was to see if these donations were near or beyond expiration dates and throw away the ones that were expired. It was sad to see how much food was wasted as …show more content…
I was able to meet so many volunteers who are willing to give back to their community. The volunteers, mainly consisted of medical school students and nursing students from many different institutes. Those with high blood pressure were educated on proper diet, such as those low in fat and salt. Those with very high blood pressure were encouraged to make an appointment with their primary care physicians to seek for medical intervention. After I was done with my ten hours, I volunteered to join their flu clinic to provide flu shots for those who didn’t have health insurance. In the future, I’m planning to join their biggest charity drive that happens once a year in Berkeley to provide free food for the needy and the free blood pressure clinic for those without health
Ever since I can remember, I have had the intense desire to help people. In high school, I joined Kiwanis Key Club and National Honors Society; both organizations allowed me to gain hours of volunteer experience helping families in need within my own community. Both organizations have annual events to benefit our community. At Christmas, Key Club adopts a few families and we buy clothing and toys for the kids. Our efforts to make the holidays a more enjoyable time for the families removed the parents’ burden of having to worry about being able to pay bills after getting presents for their children. Also, National Honors Society holds a blood drive every year in coalition with the American Red Cross. Last year our blood drive was in honor of a little girl in our community with leukemia.
In the course of my time at Union County College, I was able to participate in measures that aided my community and those in need. I took part in the donation and creation of care bags which were donated to the Salvation Army. This initiative was made by AESNJ as part of their statewide drive to help those who lack the resources needed to obtain day to day necessities such as hygienic supplies, socks, tissues and other essentials. Additionally, I made a financial contribution which went towards aiding Syrian children. Helping individuals in need encouraged me to participate in Strides against Breast Cancer a walkathon which generated money for women whose lives were impacted by cancer. The financial donations assisted women who were unable
During this semester's service learning project, I chose to serve at a community organization called Church On Wheels, Breaking Bread Soup Kitchen. Every night Monday through Friday Breaking Bread opens its doors to the community and provides a meal at no cost. Their mission statement is simple: To carry the gospel of the Lord through feeding the hungry and helping those in need. With this Christ-like love to His people, every night employees and volunteers come together to provide a meal that does not only feed them physically but nourishes the soul of everyone that enters the doors. Within the city of Midland, Texas you will find a diverse culture and community. Due to the recent oil boom, many families found themselves struggling to put a meal on the table. Breaking Bread saw the need in the community to open the doors every night to see that no one would go hungry in our town. With a commitment to see that the poor and needy are served with the love of Christ. On any given night you can expect to find
I have participated in the program Lunch Is Served, held at the First United Methodist Church in Sioux Falls. The goal of this program is to gather volunteers to pack lunches to aid the working poor, ultimately fixing the major hunger problem in Sioux Falls. I have attended this volunteer opportunity five times, and plan to volunteer again in the future. Essentially, those who participate pack as many brown paper bag lunches as possible in a streamlined fashion. Included in the bag is usually various nutritious snacks and a wrapped sandwich that will be given to those in need. My experiences there was very humbling, due to the fact that it made me realize the impact one person can have on the community. All it takes is a half hour of
After much thought about what I would want to for my volunteer project, I finally settled on the “Feed the Homeless” campaign organized by the Southwest Rotary Club of Las Vegas. This experience allowed me to work with the fantastic organization, Rotary International, and has given me the opportunity to better myself, both personally and professionally, through working with great people and overcoming the challenges presented to me.
Volunteer work has always been a prominent activity that occurred within my life. Growing up with a father that was involved in the community so much that it felt like it was his job, I was always surrounded by community service and helping others. At the young age of six years old, I decided to do my part as well, feeding the homeless in a local church in New Bedford, Massachusetts. From that year on, I believe a majority of my most valuable characteristics derived directly from my volunteer work. Now, almost thirteen years later, I am involved in over 100 hours of community service per year and am ready to apply it into a new field- as a Resident Assistant.
I have always had an interest in helping others, which led me to join the National Charity League when I was in 7th grade and stayed until I graduated high school. It is a mother/daughter charity organization with that aims to help local philanthropies. Throughout my six years of involvement, I was able to volunteer at 19 different charitable organizations throughout the Coachella Valley. The philanthropies I predominantly worked with were the Coachella Valley Rescue Mission and Gilda’s Club. The Coachella Valley Rescue Mission is a shelter for the homeless and I predominately did two things for them, serving/cooking food and fundraising. Often, when I would serve food to the homeless, they would talk to me about their lives and how they ended
I developed an extremely busy life ever since I entered Michael E. DeBakey High School for Health Professions. For me, it can be very hard to find time to volunteer especially at a hospital like St. Joseph. However, the benefits from volunteering at the hospital are enormous for me, my family, and my community. Becoming a St. Joseph volunteer gives me the chance to learn about the work environment, the different cultures that exists in Houston, and multiple personalities of the employees
It gave me the chance to vanquish my fears while also realizing that it is God’s plan for me to help out my community. However, I am not surprised that there are still unanswered questions in my head such as: Why is there such a big hunger problem? Why is this problem not spoken about more often? Is there any other way I can help stop this problem? This service has made me more knowledgeable and aware of my community. In addition, this service project has made me take matters into my own hands. Currently, every time my family goes grocery shopping I make sure they get at least five canned goods for donating. As more of my friends volunteer and more donations come in I think we can end this fight for hunger in southern Louisiana. In addition, I believe that we should all take a step back and be thankful for all that we have because some people don’t have such luxuries. God is omnipresent, He would not want to see His children starving. Finally, I see it as a mission that we volunteers get more people involved to volunteer for the greater
The model implementation based on the policy change that our group choose related to foreign nurses working in the U.S., and I may use, will be based on new recruiting models and transitions programs on education in order to analyze and expedite the process without affecting the ethics on scope of practice and safeguard the patients. Also how can qualified foreign nurses be recruited in a way that does not disrupt the delivery of vital health services to local populations of source countries, especially those countries with poor health systems and high burdens of disease.
Feed My Starving Children hosted a volunteer event at Coon Rapids, MN on August 31st, 2016 from 6pm to 7:30pm. The volunteers job was to package soy, rice, carrots mixed with potatoes, and vitamins into sealed bags. Then, place them into cardboard boxes to ship them out. As a volunteer, my job was to scoop the rice and the soy, then put them into the funnel which empties into the bag. By volunteering, I became a vital part of this assembly line. Without me, there won’t be anyone to scoop the rice and soy into the bags. My team worked well together because we helped each other. We all contributed to solving any problems that surfaced on the job. Not only that, but we showed patience and understanding when someone is working slow or is struggling to do their
This assignment will cover the issues influencing nursing practice. Adult and child are the two fields of nursing which will be discussed and compared, whilst consent will be the main issue covered throughout, it is an important issue because every individual is different, by gaining consent the individual patient’s best interests will be put first. Consent is one of the most important issues that influences nursing practice as the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) code discusses how it is important to gain consent before providing any care or treatment. Nurses should always follow the NMC guidelines to ensure they are practicing correctly and professionally, therefore this influences how they practice. Firstly the assignment will discuss the adult field of nursing, then leading on to the child field, in both areas it will explain influences of consent to nursing practice. Lastly it will have a comparison of the two fields.
For this service project I decided to volunteer at Community Regional Medical Centers’ Terry’s House. Terry’s House is a hospitality home that provides lodging for families of patients that are in critical care units at the hospital. Community Regional treats the most critically injured from nine counties. Some of these patients are hospitalized for months at a time, and their families must travel hundreds of miles to visit them. Terry’s House provides a lace for these families to sleep, shower, and eat while their family member recovers at Community. Families that qualify to stay at Terry’s House must live outside of the Fresno-Clovis area. Terry’s House was made possible by a lead gift from Tom Richards, CEO of the Penstar Group. Terry’s House was named after his
A global advisory panel for nursing has been created in 2013 to "establish a voice and vision for the future of nursing and midwifery that will advance global health" (Klopper & Hill, 2015, p. 3). This opens up the opportunity for the nursing
In my five years of active volunteer work with multiple non-profit organizations, I have seen firsthand the lack of attendance of my peers in times of great community need and support from its members. Although it has become more complicated to find time to give back to the community, with a full-time school and work schedule, there is always spare time to give back. The rapidly growing demand for volunteers in communities all across America is increasing and it is everyone’s duty, especially college students, to pay their dues to the
