A mental health counselor is a counseling professional, whose duties involves helping individuals cope with difficult life events, managing mental illnesses, and referring patients to additional resources that can help them. Before they can start counseling, they need to follow their states specific requires. For instance, in Louisiana, one has to obtain a master’s degree from an accredited program, have the required hours of supervised practice and coursework, and pass the National Counselor Examination to be licensed and certified. In addition to receiving a license in this field, an individual has to complete an addition 40 hours of continuing education every year to renew their license. The Mental Health Counseling program, offered at Capella, would satisfy most, if not all, of the licensure requirements in Louisiana.

Harry, the client’s mother, reportedly Ms. Client was born full-term and of a normal delivery. She denied she experienced any significant pre or postnatal complications. Further, Ms. Client reportedly achieved major developmental milestones within normal limits. Ms. Harry denied a history of encopresis or separation difficulties. She also denied she used tobacco products, alcohol, or illicit substances during pregnancy. Notably, Ms. Harry stated during the client’s early stages of development, she noticed the client often ran into walls and had trouble processing information at an early age. She further related, the client was tested for her academic functioning and received an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP). According to the mother, she was given special accommodations which required extra help during her classes. Ms. Harry denied a history of Ms. Client receiving speech, physical or occupational therapy at any time. According to Ms. Harry, to her knowledge the client did not experience any sexual or physical abuse. However, the client reported differently. Mother needs to gain an understanding of how substance use affects her ability to parent. Father needs to support mother’s recovery, as well as cooperate with the department. The family’s strengths are their support system and ability to work diligently as a family. Mother has a natural nurturing trait to her baby and the parents have a strong bond tied to their daughter. Parents and foster parent (grandmother) have worked very well with the department. Grandmother has maintained excellent boundaries and has reported to us weekly on how well visits have been. Parents have been very cooperative and both parents receive two drug screens weekly. The department asked that father received weekly drug screens as well, even though father has no drug issue to our knowledge he still cooperated with the department.

Counselor flagged Pt. on the AMS computer system to meet with this writer before dosing. Pt. met with counselor discussed and completed an AMS Dose evaluation to increase her dosage of methadone because she isn’t feeling well and experiencing side effects. Counselor prompted Pt. to talk about her pregnancy, medical appointment and to schedule her monthly therapy session with this writer. Pt. reported that her pregnancy is going well and she is having a lot of appointments at the Bay health hospital in Dover, DE. Pt. stated that they can’t determine the baby sex because her baby has the legs cross. Counselor told pt. that the Bay Health Hospital has a good nicu care unit and professional doctors. The client to be discussed in this assessment report is Mr. John Jones. Mr. Jones was twenty-one-years of age when he was evaluated on March 2, 2010. Mr. Jones was referred for an assessment by his psychiatrist. Mr. Jones and his mother presented on for this assessment and each were seen individually with Mr. Jones permission after he agreed to and signed the informed consent. Mr. Jones was informed through the informed consent that since was referred by his psychiatrist, his psychiatrist would receive a copy of the assessment. However, due to Mr. Jones age and limits of confidentiality, the discussion with Mr. Jones’ mother was limited in order to maintain and follow the code of ethics.

The profession of counseling has a rich and bold history, evolving through the years from varied disciplines and birthing diverse specialties and branches along the way. Often referred to as the youngest of the counseling specialties is clinical mental health counseling. Despite physical health’s grasp on the nation, mental health has been a major focus at various times throughout history and continues to become an ever growing concern for people in general. As people come to better understand mental health issues and the demand for services grows, it is important to look at how clinical mental health counseling, and the counseling profession in general, has developed over time and how it has advanced to meet the needs of those seeking services.

An interprofessional team consisting of Medical student, Pharmacist student, Nursing student and social work student met with Patient (A.O.) to perform a collaborative family assessment in a home visit. A.O. went to foster care for two months, but his father gained custody in July 2012. The father mentioned the foster care had an effect on A.O. A.O. lives with his father and his grandmother. The father works at a thrift store. A.O.’s Mother has Neurofibromatosis Type I too. The father mentioned that A.O. had a speech delay. A.J.’s father mentioned that they received assistance from the government. A.O.’s grandmother and father reported that he eats a good variety of food as he eats fruits and vegetables. A.O. reported liking pizza and McDonalds

Getting ready to embark on a journey as a white aging counselor who, will be entering retirement, this course was intimidating to me. The reviews of the book I had read were that white people had been shamed, and felt the are to blame for the views they hold. My assessment of the book was that it was informative, and I don’t think I would have gained a new perspective without educating myself about minority world views. The passages that spoke about the minority experience is similar to the stories I have heard from my wife who came to the United States in her twenties. She didn’t speak much English, and was sidelined by oppression and what she saw was preferred treatment, and systems designed to promote inequality.

When I first started my college journey I initially majored in Biology. Not knowing what I wanted to do, I was influenced by my advisor to enter the biology field. After my third year, I decided not to pursue biology anymore, and that’s when I discovered my passion for the Psychology field. After receiving my undergrad in psychology, I knew that I wanted to get my masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, but I had no idea of how broad this area is. This week assignment granted me the opportunity to interview someone who has been in this profession for 25 plus years who has worked in all sectors when it comes to mental health counseling. It allowed me to learn the pros and cons of this field and it even gave me more insight and clarity on exactly what I wanted to do. I found this week assignment to be very informative and I believe it is necessary for anyone that’s interesting in entering in this field. I am grateful for the knowledge and advice that I received during this week assignment.
