Obsession In Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Birthmark

Part of human nature is insecurity and finding flaws in oneself when looking in the mirror. Some features one might not be highly bothered in comparison with another. What happens when the person you love most, despises a visual trait about you so aggressively it becomes an obsession? In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “The Birthmark”, he creates a storyline that provides us with the lesson, that seeking perfection should be done with one’s inner beauty and not someone’s appearance. In Nathaniel’s short story, He paints a picture of the newly married characters. Aylmer is a scientist and philosopher who is married to a gorgeous woman with what he sees as just one flaw. That flaw being the birthmark. His opinion of her feature darkly changes his opinion on her outward beauty. He uses his scientific background to create a way to remove her birthmark. As a repayment of his obsession, he, in the end, kills his wife, Georgiana, trying to remove the birthmark. He spent so much time investing his hatred in what he saw as a flaw in her outward beauty, that it manifested into a constant compulsion to remove that one trait in a race to perfection. He lost sight that Georgiana’s beauty went deeper than what appeared on her surface. Georgina was adored by so many. Women were envious of her and men desired her (par.7). Out of them all, she chooses Aylmer. After reading through his opinion and thoughts, it would make the reader question if he truly loved her, or was he in love with the idea of making her into what he envisioned as perfect. He took a confident woman and tore her down till she was so unsecured to be looked upon by her husband. He loses the idea of what love is.
