As Good as it Gets is a romantic comedy starring Jack Nicholas and Helen Hunt. Marvin (Jack Nicholas) portrays a middle-aged man, working from home as a Best Selling Novelist, who suffers from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Carol (Helen Hunt) is a single mother working as a waitress where Marvin dines regularly. Marvin is a vulgar, misanthropist that has specific expectations and needs, some of them are due to his illness; others are because of the kind of person he is. The relationship evolves when Marvin shows up at his regular eating establishment expecting Carol to wait on him but Carol quit her job and decided to work closer to home to care for her ill son. Marvin becomes emotionally distraught because of his OCD and arrives at Carol's home to find out why she quit her job. We often hear people say they are OCD because they want things organized a specific way or have expectations of how things should be done. They get frustrated, fix it and then move on. Patients that have been medically diagnosed with OCD meeting are not able to move on so easily. True OCD is separated into two different parts. The person first deals with the obsessive part of the disease, which then leads to the compulsive part. The Obsessive part of the disease occurs when unwanted thoughts and expectations become so severe that it interferes and disrupt a person’s daily life.
