I plan on getting my degree in Sociology and climbing as far up the ladder as I can possibly climb. I want to work with children in the system, that have no voice. I volunteer for CASA (Court appointed special advocate) we stand up for the interest of a child who has experienced abuse or neglect. I plan on taking full advantage of the continuing education they have available which will help further advance my career. I am dedicated to helping families and children in any way I can and take great pride in doing so. We live in a culture where children are challenged with problems all the time. Regardless of what the problems may be, children need help developing skills to communicate effectively and strengthen their relationships. While most families can recognize that their children …show more content…
Obtaining a Bachelors in Sociology (Social Work) will help me to help others prepare for change and ultimately achieve both my short-term and long-term goals.
Although this is my first year with Thomas Edison State University, I have learned several things that will help me to become successful in my career.
I have learned the importance of having good communication skills, touching up my writing skills, how to conduct proper research for reliable information whether it is in a library or online, and my knowledge of pronunciation, which is growing stronger every day. I consider my outgoing personality to be one of my strong suits and I find that to be very valuable in my career.
In my short term goal, I hope to work my way up into a Social Workers position at the hospital where I
My intended major is Sociology. Once I earn my degree I intend to find a career in either social work or teaching. In choosing social work my focus will be low income families and programs that decrease social inequality. As a child I yearned for the ability to help people, to change someone’s life for the better and give them back the strength and hope they have lost through life’s battles. I gained this eagerness to provide assistance when my parents brought me to their homeland of Guatemala. Guatemala is a very poor country and I saw the despair and hopelessness of many while others still strived every day to elevate the lives of their family amidst poverty.
Working toward social justice for others has already begun for me. I know that being a graduate student with help hone and refine my skills as a clinical social worker. After I graduate, I have a long-term goal of working in community and hospital settings. I am especially interested in issues that relate to families.
I cannot emphasize enough the passion I have for child welfare services, I like helping individuals, children to be exact. I cannot see myself doing anything else with my life I never wanted to do anything else in life. I have demonstrated a great deal of capacity for success in the Indiana child welfare scholars program by a number of things: one, staying commented to one major; two presenting myself as a practicing child welfare worker; three, pushing myself to always do better in my classes. Once I knew I wanted to go to college in order to achieve my dream social work was my only option. If I did anything else it would have been for the money I would not have been for the right respectable reasons.
I am in college for one reason and one reason only; to further my education and earn a degree. Coming to SBU has always been my dream, I have always had an appreciation for the fact that by attending this university I can get a Christian based education. Beginning my journey here at SBU I have already wrestled with deciding on a major. Upon my arrival I thought I was going into English Education and then soon after I arrived I had decided on Christian Ministry, but again decided that wasn’t right for me. That process is what has brought me to where I am today; pursuing a degree in Social Work.
The major that I am pursuing is Social Work. Social Workers work with people in need of various things. They advocate for those that cannot and do not know how to do it for themselves. My ultimate goal is to make the life of others more bearable. This is what I want to do for the rest of my life. I want to dedicate myself to the wellness of others and work to make this world a better place by working with people who have been overlooked and feel that they have lost to the struggles
The career that I am most interested in studying is child and family social work. The role that many social workers have is being able to help vulnerable children that are in difficult situations while providing aid to families. Growing up in a difficult living situation motivates me to want to help these children and families as much as possible and to relieve their pain.
I am pursing a Master of Social Work degree from Texas State University because it is my life ambition to help those in need. In order to best serve others, I want to first empower myself with amble knowledge and experience. I believe attaining a graduate degree in social work from Texas State is the best way to equip myself with the proper tools and education to be a powerful change agent in the field. I am sure social work is the profession for me, and after completing my undergraduate studies in social work, I am ready to advance my knowledge base and open more opportunities for myself as a graduate student.
I learned there are different types of social degrees in the field of social work for a variety of social work occupations. The foundation of social work education begins at the undergraduate level to obtain a bachelor’s degree in social work or behavior science. Social workers with this level of education will learn about abuse and addiction. You learn how to education and help clients stay on track and make better, healthier, and more sensible choices. For more advance positions in social work one will need to obtain their master’s degree. The MSW program focuses more on the social services policy, procedures, and regulations. It takes a deeper look into occupational ethics and social work leadership. This program requires at least
The values and principles of social work captivated me even before I fully understood what the profession entailed. My experience as a 16 year old junior counselor at the Alamance County Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club allowed me to see the importance of empowerment, as well as the necessity of linking marginalized populations to resources. The majority of the children I worked with were minorities with low income. As I developed rapport with the youth, they began to share their struggles (i.e. family issues, academic challenges, and financial struggles), and my heart immediately went out to them. I had always known that I had a passion for helping others, but this experience at the Boys and Girls Club showed me that assisting others was
Personally I want to be at a place where I can make a change in low income families lives from a positive stance. My desire to become a Social Worker or acquire a position in which I could assist people in need, started when I began helping my older brother with HFA- High Functioning Autism. Initially, I wanted to primarily help individuals with disabilities, then once I realized that there is much more assistance I can give to people with various other problems/issues. I wanted to expand my education and profession/ advance in the field surrounding
My name is Lluvia Herrera. I am a sophomore at Hutchinson Community College, and will be transfering to Wichita State University next fall to obtain a bachalors degree in Social Work. After, I would like to further my education and obtain a masters degree. I currently work at Sunshine Community Child Care, I love helping others and working with kids! My career goal is to work at a children's hospital.
Perusing a career in social work has been a passion of mines for a great deal of time. For the past few years I have been working towards making that dream come true. During my fifth semester I partook in a community based psychology course entitled Child Assault Prevention Education. Throughout this course I gained firsthand experience in working with the child welfare system. Within the classroom I discussed the various aspects of child maltreatment, brainstormed how child maltreatment can be prevented, and how to promote awareness of this issue.
Each Social worker is created in a unique way. Some are affected personally, by issues, people, and/or situations around them. I carry my own personal experiences from good to bad ones. Becoming a Master’s level Social Worker provides me with a larger spectrum to which I could dedicate myself. Accomplishing a Master degree in social work sets me a step closer to obtaining a licensure, being a therapist, a supervisor, a program director, and many other things. As social workers, we carry different roles which can be defined by whom we work for, as to working with individual (micro), institutions (mezzo) or within a system (macro).
I have always known that I would go into a career that would pertain to the advocacy of children. When I started my education at Simmons I found a passion for working with high school students, and now, I cannot imagine doing anything different with my life. I want to continue my education with the Dunns Scholar Program because I want to get into a classroom as soon as possible. I currently work at Codman Academy in Dorchester, and I wish I could be there full time. When I graduate from Simmons I want to work in an inner city school; in either Boston, or Chicago. I want to be able to work with children that our education system has let fall through the cracks, and be a part of the movement that brings them back up. I think continuing my degree
The concentration/specialization I intend on focusing on is the direct practice of children/youth and families. Since I was 14 years old all my jobs consist of working with children/youth; from being a summer day camp leader to an adolescent treatment worker. Out of the several job positions I had I was able encounter a lot of children and their families. I grew accustom to helping others and advocating for children/youth rights. Before I was ready to pursue my undergrad education, I knew exactly what I wanted to do and that was to help children and families that are in need like my family was. As a Social Worker I want to be able to assist families with becoming stable in the communities they live in.
