Occupational Therapy Career

I am incredibly glad that I learned about occupational therapy. While I've always had an interest in the medical field and social services, I did not know what occupational therapy was until several years ago. My first time around in college, I thought I would end up working overseas in relief and development or with marginalized populations in the U.S. When I graduated, I began to explore health care careers. As I researched physical therapy, I happened to read about occupational therapy. I was intrigued. After more research and consideration, I decided to pursue this career path. Since then I have been taking prerequisites, doing observation hours, and dedicating myself to becoming an occupational therapist.

Occupational Therapist work in different locations, it all depends on the patient. Therapists often work in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, clinics, schools, and in industries (www.wfot.org). The highest employment for occupational therapists are in offices of health practioners

The role of an occupational therapist is to help people all ages with disabilities become able to perform mental and physical tasks. They also help people gain their mobility back. The only information i was aware of was the job description. Other than that, I was clueless! I would hope to learn a lot more about this career in many different ways. I want to know how does it feel to help someone be able to function properly. I would like to know the most challenging obstacles I will have to overcome as an occupational therapist. My career plans is to become an Occupational Therapist. In doing so, I have begun preparing myself for graduate school at MUSC. I started by printing and completing the application for acceptance in the school. This did not take very long; however, I explored the Occupational Therapy program webpage for the different criteria that is needed to increase my chances of getting accepted. I have known for years now that I wanted my career to be in the medical field, but it was not until a couple of years ago that I heard about occupational therapy. At that point I was not sure of what an OTA was or what they did, but the more I found out the more intrigued I became. Not only would I help people regain movement in their upper body, but I would also be allowed to help adults and children that have emotional, mental, or social issues. I’ve been interested in occupational therapy for a while now because of the fact that you are given the chance of helping others recover how to live. Also, but not the main reason why I am interested, OT’s make a decent living. Occupational therapy has been around since the 1900’s. A treatment plan is usually developed by an occupational therapist that lays out the different types of activities and goals that are to completed by the patient. Therapists show patients how to use the adaptive equipment, like leg braces, and wheelchairs. These devices help the patients perform multiple daily tasks with the ability to function more independently. Occupational therapy practitioners ask “what matters to you”, they do not ask “What is the matter with you”. OTs see their patients as more than a medical mess or someone who needs fixing but, they see them as people who are hurting and need someone to stand by them and/or help them overcome whatever obstacles they face. We are a mixture of mental and physical therapy. Through all the experiences I have had; I have come to love the idea that someday I will be able to call my self an OTR and change the daily life’s of those who lost all hope. I personally know what it feels like to loss everything, or that there is no hope in things every getting better. No one deserves to feel like that and if I am given the chance in my life to be the light in just one person’s life then I have achieved what it means to be a true OTR. Ever since I was a young girl, I have known that I want to work in the medical field in some way, shape, or form. It was not until my last year of high school that I realized that I wanted to be an occupational therapist. I recognize that many students do not know “what they want to be when they grow up” until later into college, so that allows me time to get a head start in my research to make sure that this is what I actually want to do with my life. Although I have done past research on the topic, I believe that this this research report is the perfect opportunity to reassure myself that occupational therapy is the occupation for me.

There are many health professions in this world. Why then did I choose occupational therapy? Well firstly I love the one to one contact that you have with your patients. Were you must understand their needs and find their talents and then help them in doing their hardest to make it grow. My main reason however is that I believe that you can not reach your maximum in life, live life to the fullest if you do not know your talents. Some people's talents may be more dominant than others, but in the end if we look hard enough, we can all find that hidden power inside ourselves, the thing that makes us unique from the billons of people on this earth and gives us the power to reach our goals in life.
