My career plans is to become an Occupational Therapist. In doing so, I have begun preparing myself for graduate school at MUSC. I started by printing and completing the application for acceptance in the school. This did not take very long; however, I explored the Occupational Therapy program webpage for the different criteria that is needed to increase my chances of getting accepted. I noticed there are several requirements that must be completed. This included volunteer work experience and supplemental profile form. I searched on the web for various rehab centers in the Florence area that would allow volunteer work. These included McLeod Rehabilitation Services, Robert S Fogner, Lowe’s Therapy, and Carolina Rehabilitation Hospital. I spoke
The career path I have chosen to enter upon the completion of my college major is in Occupational Therapy Assistance. Occupational Therapy is the medical treatment for people who are limited by mental health problems, the aging process, physical injury or illness, and learning or developmental disabilities. An Occupational Therapist Assistant, or OTA, is the assistant to the Occupational Therapists, or OT, and assists him or her in providing Occupational Therapy treatments and procedures. An Occupational Therapist Assistant may also assist in the development of treatment plans, direct activity programs, carry out routine functions, and document the progress of patients’ treatments. OTs and OTAs work together with their patients, and their goal is have their patients regain the highest ability of functionality in their daily lives.
My career goal is to become an Occupational Therapist and specialize in pediatrics. I want to specialize in pediatrics because I have always loved to be around children and be able to help them in whatever they need. Also, pediatrics is important to me because kids are our future and if I can help kids for their future I will be glad to do so. Helping kids become more independent on their activities of daily living makes me happy because I am helping them to become more independent and make them feel like they can accomplish anything. In order to be able to do this I have to get a Master Degree and I plan on getting this degree from Loma Linda University. In five years I see myself working in the Occupational Therapy setting and working with kids. I see myself, making others
As an Occupational Therapy Assistant, I will work alongside an Occupational Therapist and work directly with patients. The difference between an OT and an OTA is that OT’s set up treatment plans and perform medical assessments while OTA’s carry out the treatment plans with the patients. In volunteering at rehab clinics, I’ve learned that Occupational Therapists often spend much of their time dealing with paperwork while OTA’s are performing more hands on work with people. Their day includes helping patients in performing rehabilitative exercises within a treatment plan. Occupational Therapy Assistants help people to regain their ability to perform activities of daily living, or ADL’s. These are the core aspects which
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “Occupational therapy assistants and aides help patients develop, recover, and improve the skills needed for daily living and working.” OT Career Path.com also states that, “occupational therapy assistants assist with the rehabilitation and care of patients with mental, developmental, physical, social, and emotional disabilities” Occupational therapist may provide many different forms of service from setting up materials, moving a patient, explaining exercises, preparing reports and implementing treatment plan as prescribed by the Occupational Therapist. An OTA’s duties vary greatly an example of their duties include helping patients acquire fine
The Psychology Major’s Handbook by Tara L. Kuther gives a list of positions that Psychology majors can obtain with a bachelor’s degree. This list is helpful because only one-fourth of psychology majors go to graduate school immediately following graduation (Kuther, 2015, p. 170). Within this list, the occupation that caught my eye was that of an Occupational Therapist. Though one cannot be an Occupational Therapist with only a bachelor’s degree, one can be an Occupational Therapist Assistant (OTA) with a bachelor’s degree. With other training and licensure, an individual with a bachelor’s in psychology can work in the field of Occupational Therapy because psychology teaches one human service skills. Employers may not understand why a psychology major would be eligible for a job like Occupational Therapy; thus it is the responsibility of the applicant to explain their eligibility for the desired position (Kuther, 2015, p. 171).
Children with many different disabilities need the intervention of an occupational therapist; therefore, occupational therapists work in the school systems. Elderly people often begin to lose their physical ability to do certain tasks, so there are occupational therapists working in nursing homes or providing in home care. Many athletes suffer sports injuries that cause them to lose their ability to do daily activities, and occupational therapists are available to them in rehabilitation centers and hospitals. These are just a few of the many scenarios where occupational therapists are available; they can also work in orthopedic centers, colleges, mental health settings, and drug and alcohol settings (Hoffman & Harris, 2000, p. 405). Due to the fact that occupational therapists can often specialize to a certain type of patient, it may be helpful to hold a job in college where one could learn how to work with that group of people. For instance, if a prospective occupational therapy student wants to work in a preschool for students with special needs after they graduate then it may be beneficial to hold a job as an assistant preschool teacher. Similarly, if the goal of an occupational therapy student is to provide their service to elderly people then training and working as a CNA would provide both useful experience and medial
I believe that my prior work and school related experiences allow me to stand out above other future occupational therapy assistants. I am currently in school obtaining a bachelor's degree in psychology. Throughout the past three years I have taken classes not only in the field of psychology but also anatomy and physiology, biology, and chemistry. I strongly believe that the time I spent while obtaining a bachelor's degree and focusing on healthcare classes will allow me to do exceptionally well in the occupational therapy field. Since I have taken many undergraduate classes while obtaining a psychology degree, I have taken many of the classes that are incorporated into the coursework at zane state, therefore I will have less classes to take
When I came to SLU, I had trouble finding where I fit in. I tried club volleyball and Greek life, but I never felt that those places were where I belonged. Finally, I joined Alpha Phi Omega (APO), a service fraternity on campus, but I still was not as involved as I wanted to be. While APO taught me about the importance of leadership, friendship, and service, I knew I wanted to be involved in an organization that would support me professionally in my future career. Thus, when I started my junior year, I realized that the occupational therapy community at SLU was where I belonged, and Pi Theta Epsilon could provide me an opportunity to merge the two together.
Abraham Lincoln once said “The best way to predict the future is to create it.” Both careers I have chosen fit my goals, however, one career seems to fit my goals better than the other. I have decided to choose between an Occupational Therapy Assistant and a Psychiatric Nurse. Someday, I want to have a family, I want a career that will financially support my family and I also want a career that I will love doing for years, until I am at the retirement age. I want to be able to be content with the career I choose, and not go back and forth between careers.
A Chinese teacher named Confucius once said, "Choose a job you love and you will never have to work again." I strongly believe that by becoming a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant, I will realize the truth of that statement.
The scope of practice and responsibilities of an occupational therapist include many aspects of helping someone recover from a variety of health issues. As an occupational therapist you treat injured, ill, and disabled patients through the therapeutic use of everyday activities. The activities help patients recover and improve to be able to function for daily living. Therapists show patients how to use adaptive equipment such as leg braces, wheelchairs, and eating aids (Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2015). As an occupational therapist there are a variety of fields you can be certified in. This can include pediatrics, geriatrics, acute care, home health, and rehabilitation. The qualities one must have in order to be a successful occupational therapist include but are not limited to having communication skills, compassion, flexibility, interpersonal skills, patience, and writing skills
When I first considered occupational therapy, I was a sophomore in college sitting in my advisors office upset because I had no clue what I was doing with my life. I knew I wanted to be part of the medical field but couldn’t narrow it down any further. I had signed up for classes required for medical school, thinking those would cover my bases as I figured out what I actually wanted to do. My advisor and I were discussing my passion for helping people find ways to improve their lives and be independent. She kept encouraging me to look into occupational therapy because she thought it would be perfect for me.
“The best days are the days that I get to a patient’s home and I am told that he or she has been able to perform a task that in the past was impossible.” -Dr. Tom Wright (“Occupational Therapist”). If helping out people to let them do what they once thought was impossible is something that makes a person feel happy and great, becoming an occupational therapist might be a job he or she would like to consider. Choosing a job is a huge choice in someone’s life, so he or she needs to make many decisions.
I, Sydney Gabrielle Lewis, am from Texarkana, Texas. I have one sister named Courtney who is now a Pharmacist in Alabama. I am a Nutrition major with intentions of also pursuing a doctoral degree in Occupational Therapy. I love to go fishing, hiking, exercising, and hanging out with friends and family. I love cheesy jokes and puns.
Upon earning my master’s degree and licensure in occupational therapy, I want to work with the geriatric population. Prior to starting the occupational therapy school, I served the geriatric population as a certified nursing assistant for six years and my experience working with this population has prompted me to work with the geriatric population. However, as I am aware of the baby boomer population gradually increasing; it is imperative that I acquire the knowledge and skills needed to provide low vision services in order to facilitate independence through training with the use of adaptive devices to complete ADLs and IADLs. Therefore earning a certificate in low vision will be a good asset for me.
