Ancient texts can show modern society many thing, such as how some emotion traits can be good or evil, and why people with the same skills many times achieve vastly different results. Two characters who can be analyze this was are Odysseus from the Odyssey, and Oedipus from Oedipus Rex. The Odysseus is the story of a warrior, Odysseus, who journeys to his native land of Ithaca despite many obstacles and succeeds in driving out suitors who are present in his home/ Oedipus Rex is the story of Oedipus, a man who has accidentally married his mother and killed his father, and learning the truth, becomes blind and is exiled. Odysseus and Oedipus are both intelligent heroes who use their wit to solve their problems, with the former returning successfully home and the latter failing miserably. The reason behind their different outcomes is the morality of the emotional traits which guide them. Odysseus used to be arrogant and hedonistic, as can be examined by look at his interaction with the cyclops and the sirens, but he eventually learns to become humble and less hedonistic, as seen by his interactions in Ithaca and on Calypso’s island. Oedipus has a bad temperament and is quick to anger throughout his life and to everyone, from his youth before he had become king up to and including his current reign, and he has a short temper in reference to both strangers and friends.
Odysseus, when dealing with the Cyclopes, shows with and cunning intelligence, by telling the cyclopes “Noman
The Cyclops says to the Cyclopes: “Nohbdy’s tricked me, Nohbdy’s ruined me.” The Cyclopes reply: “Ah well, if nobody has played you foul there in your lonely bed, we are no use in pain given by the great Zeus.” Odysseus’ cleverness helped him evade the fate that would have befallen him if the other Cyclopes caught him. One more leadership quality possessed by Odysseus is wisdom. Odysseus’ wisdom is displayed when Odysseus conquers the town of Ismarus. Odysseus says: “I told them ‘Back, and quickly!
Homer, a poet from ancient Greece, wrote The Odyssey which illustrates the values of the Greeks. As the hero, Odysseus embarks on a journey home from Troy and, through this journey, the reader sees the traits that Odysseus is praised and rebuked for. Odysseus’s incredible strength and courage as well as his confidence both positively and negatively affect the outcomes of his decisions. More often than not, these two characteristics are what keep him alive; although, he relies on these qualities more than he should and it ultimately gets him into trouble. Odysseus is able to use these traits to his advantage from time to time; however, they could be considered his fatal flaw.
When the Cyclopes asked for his name, Odysseus replied “I am Nobody. That is what I am called by my mother, my father, and all of my friends” (119). After falling asleep Odysseus blinded the Cyclopes, who was then not able to call for help because “Nobody” was there. The idea of Odysseus to refer to himself as “Nobody” was ironic for the reason that it embodies the lesson that Homer was trying to teach. Odysseus did not, however, recognize that face yet and foolishly boasted to the Cyclopes about who he was and how great of a man he was after he and his men were to temporary safety.
“Leadership consists not in degrees of technique but in traits of character; it requires moral rather than athletic or intellectual effort, and it imposes on both leader and follower alike the burdens of self-restraint.”-(Lewis H. Lapham). In the epic of the Odyssey, the main character Odysseus has many traits. Odysseus’ traits show the true characteristics in the story by seeing his character act under pressure and overcome it. Odysseus is a war hero, but after the war he will encounter challenges. He is an intelligent leader who is determined to end his epic journey and get home to his son and wife.
The king of Ithaca, son of the god Laertes and Anticleia, married to Penelope and father to Telemachus, was the hero Odysseus. Odysseus is known for his cunning and brilliant intelligence. During Odysseus’ lifetime, he went on many adventures including a few that involved a cyclops, the Land of the Dead, and the Suitors.
A quote from Epictetus, a Greek stoic philosopher, describes skillful pilots as gaining their reputation and glory through surmounting their storms and tempests. In the epic The Odyssey by Homer, one man named Odysseus shows his glory and builds his reputation in different ways. Odysseus is a skillful pilot in which he overcomes a long journey, a suppressed identity, and a battle in his own home.
Odysseus has never truly been alone in the Odyssey. Throughout the Odyssey, Odysseus has always had Poseidon, Athena, and Hermes by his side. Whether their actions had a positive effect or not, they were always by his side. He had many other gods and goddesses that pushed him along the way but, these three really had a huge impact on his journey.
On the beautiful island of Ithaca lives the intelligent living superhuman Odysseus. In the poem The Odyssey, By Homer, the main character Odysseus has to set sail on a journey to fight in a war. Odysseus just had a son named Telemachus right before he left for war. From his actions in the story, you can tell he is outgoing and daring. The beginning of the poem takes place at Ithaca, sadly the story mostly takes place outside of Ithaca. Odysseus is arrogant and clever.
In The Odyssey, the author, Homer, describes Odysseus’ epic, but difficult, journey home from Troy. As The Odyssey progresses, Homer characterizes Odysseus as the fearless, clever warrior, who is helped by Athena and Circe, who are intelligent, but always subservient to men, women, showing that men are more powerful than even the most smart and talented woman. One example of Homer’s depiction of Odysseus is when Athena tries to help motivate Odysseus in the fight against the suitors by reminding him of his battles in Troy; she says, “You are not the man you were Odysseus! Where is the courage and strength you showed in that endless conflict, those nine years of battles for beautiful Helen! Many a man you killed in open fight and by your device the great city of Priam was taken!”
Odysseus was sound asleep in the woods only to be awakened after hearing the sound of girls shouting. The girls were kicking around a ball when they woke Odysseus as they were waiting for the river-washed clothes to dry in the sun. Fate was taking place to connect the exhausted traveler with a princess, Nausikaa. The night before, Athena visited Nausikaa in her dreams with intentions to influence her to go to the river to wash herself and her clothes for reason to be able to meet Odysseus. Once Odysseus gathered himself to go see what was around him, he comes out from behind the bushes causing the maids accompanying Nausikaa to all scatter at the sight of him. He is compared to a calm mountain lion that looks to be roughened by his hardships,
Every person has strengths and weaknesses. These strengths and weaknesses are never more evident than during conflict. In the Odyssey, Odysseus is forced to find his way home and his character traits both save him and cause him great hardships, and throughout the Epic Poem he is forced to use his incredible wit to get out of a situation mainly caused by his own thirst for glory. However, it is also noticeable that Odysseus is learning his ways and he changes his glory seeking ways by the end of the poem. Throughout the Odyssey it is evident how the strengths and weakness of Odysseus and his allies interplay with the strengths and weakness of enemies in conflicts.
In the epic poem, the Odyssey, by Homer Odysseus experiences many amazing events before arriving at home in Ithaka. I believe that the experiences that he has had on his long journey and his personality will not allow Odysseus to be at peace in his homeland. Odysseus has been away from home for about twenty years. He has experienced many trials and adventures on his prolonged journey home. I believe that Odysseus will not be at peace in his homeland because he has been a warrior since an early age, he is not patient, and most importantly, he has a very curious mind.
One of the challenges Odysseus faces on his journey back to Ithaca is the land of the Lotus Eaters. The Lotus Eaters showing “no will to do us harm” (489) offers Odysseus and his men a sweet honeyed plant. Who ever ate the Lotus became “forgetful of their homeland” (489) and “longed to stay forever” (489). Odysseus and his men need to overcome the temptations of staying there eating Lotus any time they want. They have to fight the internal battle of giving in to the sweet honeyed plant and instead they need to stay strong and support each other. Seeing his men losing desire to return home because of this dangerous honeyed plant, Odysseus knows he has to do something fast before all hope of returning to Ithaca is lost. Taking action into his
Throughout the play we find that Oedipus, the protagonist of this Greek tragedy, is tested by life in a number of ways. To those in Athens who watched the performance of Oedipus the King, Oedipus appeared to be the embodiment of a perfect Athenian. He is self-confident, intelligent, and strong-willed. Ironically, these are the very traits which bring about his tragic discovery. He is portrayed as a character of
By looking at the epic The Odyssey by Homer, there are a lot of contacts between human and immoral, the relationship between Athena and Odysseus, which make me interesting, also this is important for the story. The relationship between Athena and Odysseus is the key for the story, because Odysseus had received a lot of help from Athena, their relationship is the reason to explain why would an immortal Athena who never interesting or attracted by any male either mortal or immortal, but only a human male, Odysseus, and helps Odysseus in either direct and indirect ways to get back home and take average to all the suitor in order for Odysseus to get back his family and his land.
