The Astonishing Heroic Journey of Odysseus Odysseus embarks upon the heroic journey which includes many interesting events transforming him into an epic hero. The Odyssey, as the epic story written by Homer which follows the heroic journey. The heroic journey is a pattern of narrative that appears in myth development created by Joseph Campbell. According to dictionary.com, an epic hero is “a brave and noble character in an epic poem, admired for great achievements or affected by grand events” The stages of the heroic journey are used as guidance which molds Odysseus into a true hero even when coming upon challenges. Athena was one of his only supporters. Later on in the epic on page 120 in the Adventures of Ulysses it says, “Athene heard it. She went to Zeus and asked him to call the gods into council.” That’s when she decided to persuade the gods into allowing him a sign of hope since Poseidon was not present. She was his mentor because she looked out for him. After defeating Troy Odysseus gets to the actual part of his adventure also known as the threshold. Odysseus encounters with The Cyclops named Polyphemus and is cursed by Poseidon which is now one of Odysseus’ enemies. Circe, Nausicaa, and Ino were his allies because they all attempt to help him try to get back to the ordinary world which would be the land of Ithaca.
On his way back from Nausicaa’s, Odysseus disguises himself as a suitor. This is his approach. The ordeal would be him returning home and getting revenge for what they did to him and his family. He killed all the suitors and his reward is getting his wife back. The road back is reconquering his kingdom.
