Odysseus is heroic because all throughout his adventures he always wants to make sure his men don’t fall in to danger and is always being a good leader for them. In the Cyclops story Odysseus and his men find and island and go searching for food. They end up exploring a cave and find loads of cheese and sheep. Naturally Odysseus and his men indulge themselves in the food when a large Cyclops named Polythemus. The Cyclops traps them in the cave using a large bolder once the men were trapped the Cyclops ate two of the sailors. Odysseus then goes to the Cyclops and offers him his best wine. Once the Cyclops was drunk and passed out Odysseus and his crew sharpened a large log in which the burnt and drove it in to the one eyed creatures eye. Then
Odysseus was a great leader and hero throughout the story in many examples as I have listed below. My first example is when Odysseus was able to make a spear when he was in Polyphemus's cave. He then took the spear and drove it through the eye of the beast, blinding him. The cyclops then moved the boulder and the men escaped by hiding under sheep. This example shows that O. is a hero because he is daring. If the cyclops was to find any of them or he had missed and woken him then this surely would have meant death for them. The second reason is in book twelve when O. must pass the sirens. To do so he slabs beeswax on the ears of his shipmates. This will make it so them can not be lured into the captivity of the sirens. O. then lashes himself
One of Odysseus’ other characteristics is his intelligence. When the Cyclops asked Odysseus for his name he decided to give him a fake one, “Cyclops, / you ask me of my honorable name? Remember/ the gift you promised me and I shall tell you. / My name is Nohbdy: mother, father, and friends, everyone calls me Nohbdy. 313-316” This quality of his saves his life many times. When Odysseus and his soldiers stab the Cyclops’ eye, he cries out asking help from his fellow Cyclopes, but when he says Odysseus’ fake name to them they walk away saying for the Cyclops to pray to Poseidon. When the Cyclops eye was injured, he went in front of the door so that no one could escape so Odysseus had to devise a plan, “The Cyclops’ rams were handsome, fat, with heavy/ fleeces, a dark violet. / Three abreast/ I tied them silently together, twining/ cords of willow from the ogre’s bed,/ then slung a man under each middle one/ to ride there safely, shielded left and right./ So three sheep could convey each man. I took/ the woolliest ram, the choicest of the flock. / and hung myself under his kinky belly. 376-384” Odysseus had to think of a plan to escape right on the spot, this shows how clever he is. Odysseus has many other traits besides his intelligence which makes him a hero.
“The art of leadership is saying no, and not saying yes”(Tony Blair). In the Odyssey, Odysseus is the captain of a large fleet trying to get back to their home, Ithaca. Odysseus, with his crew, had to go through many obstacles to return to Ithaca. Odysseus was a bad leader because he was selfish, arrogant, and couldn’t control his men.
Odysseus is a hero because he acts courageously while facing the many challenges he encounters. Odysseus’s shows great bravery when he engages in physical challenges. Odysseus daringly fights against the suitors, while significantly outnumbered: “For I must
In the epic The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus should not be considered a good leader because he is giving false hope to his crew and treats his crew very poorly by letting them die for his mistakes. A good leader should do what is necessary in order to achieve their goal and must be considerate of their crew, by respecting them and notifying them about any changes in their plans. It is the leader’s duty to let the crew decide what to do in tough situations and consider their opinions on entering risky scenarios.
Odysseus was an effective leader for many reasons. one example was when Odyssey use his mind to get his men’s out of hades. one example was when he help his mans get to safety. he was an Effective leaders and in this part of the story,Odysseus men were scared of of the Hades, and they did not think Odysseus would make it back,so he told them not to worry, i will make it back and he tells them to leave if he doesn’t make it back to the ship. another example was when Odysseus and his men were stock in cave with the one eye monster.
Odysseus has many heroic qualities such as cleverness, physical strength, and bravery. First, Odysseus tricked the cyclops, Polyphemus, by telling him his name was “Nobody” ( The Odyssey 1058). This showed cleverness because Odysseus gave the cyclops a bottle of wine to make him drunk, which caused him to fall asleep. Then, Odysseus found some wood and sharpened it to stab Polyphemus in the eye. While Polyphemus was blind, he asked Odysseus what his name was, he said it was Nobody and made the cyclops believed that was his name. Another example of when he showed a heroic quality is when Odysseus tricked the suitors by doing an impossible task he knew no one could do and it was to string
Odysseus is a hero because he does things for other people. During his journey, Odysseus does many things to help his crew out. One example on how he helped his crew out is in book 9, “I shot back with my crafty way, ‘My ship? Poseidon god of the earthquake smashed my ship, drove it against the rocks at your island’s far cape…”(220, 318-320). This quote is from the part of the book where they get past the cyclops.
Were Odysseus and Alexander the Great Good Leaders? Odysseus was a good leader and wasn’t a good leader at the same time. Throughout The Odyssey he would continue to do things that made me feel as if he was a good leader and as if he wasn’t a good leader. He showed he was a good leader when all his men got addicted to the Lotus flower, so he had to literally drag them from the flowers back onto the ship so they could set sail. After they left that island, Odysseus and his men, headed over to other land, where they met the Cyclops.
After reading about Odysseus in the first part of The Odyssey he may seem like a good leader. Nobody had thought that deeper in the epic Odysseus’ actions made him turn out to be a bad leader. Homer’s epic The Odyssey is about how Odysseus and his men are journeying back home to Ithaca from the Trojan War. He encountered many obstacles along his journey that cost him the lives of his men. Odysseus faced atrocious monsters, foxy nymphs, and gods out for revenge. The journey that he completed tested his skills not only as leader, but as a human too. Odysseus proves himself to be a bad leader due to him being deceitful, oppressive, and dramatic.
This Story of a reckless leader was told long ago never written until now, Odysseus’ journey was spoken by a blind poet named Homer. The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus is a bad leader for many reasons. The first reason is Odysseus pride proves he does not put his men first.
Although, Odysseus has positive traits that contribute to his status as a god hero, he often times display bad traits, but that does not mean he is a bad leader. Odysseus lacked to be a good leader when him and his men were on the way to Ithaca. He failed to tell them what was going on when they arrived and failed to tell them how long they were staying. His men relied on him to prepare them on what was going to happen during their journey. His men expected Odysseus to make decisions for his crew because he was their leader. Odysseus is arrogant and thinks he outsmarts everybody he knows. When Odysseus gets advice from Circe about Scylla, telling Odysseus not to fight with Scylla, Odysseus does not listen. Scylla was inmortal and could not
Throughout the course of the Odyssey, Odysseus and his men find themselves facing the most difficult of challenges. Odysseus will be classified as a bad leader or not based on how he acted during these challenges. Once inspecting Odysseus' decisions and thought process throughout his journeys, he is an overall bad leader. Some of his bad leadership moments are when Odysseus refuses to leave the cave of the cyclops, not communicating with his men about the contents of the bag from Aeolus, and not warning his men about the danger of eating Helios' cattle. All of these situations resulted in the death of many soldiers and could have been prevented by Odysseus.
Although it may seem debatable, Odysseus is a hero mainly due to his commitment to his country and the bravery he tends to show. The commitment alon is shown when when Odysseus goes out to fight for the war however, his bravery is shown throughout many parts. Odysseus first shows his bravery (and curiosity) when he decides to explore the land of the Cyclops: “I’ll go across with my own ship and probe the natives living over there”(Book 9). This makes Odysseus a hero simply because the bravery, he is risking his life to travel through undiscovered land without much safety. The second act of that make Odysseus heroic is his ability to be an effective leader. This is shown when Odysseus is worried about being fair with his soldiers therefore,
In order to be a great leader, one must be confident and be able to embrace commitment. These qualities and many more are what separate the average person and a great leader because they are qualities difficult to develop for most people. A leader must have confidence in order to lead their people as well as have intuition or problem solving skills to resolve problems in the group. The epic The Odyssey by Homer describes the ten year long journey Odysseus persists through to get home from Troy after the Trojan War. Odysseus is first introduced in Homer’s epic The Iliad as the ruler of Ithaca alongside his beloved wife Penelope. Odysseus then leaves the Trojan War with his men, but returns alone from the dangerous voyage home. Under those circumstances, Odysseus remained a great leader to his men despite all that happens to him and his crew.
