What is a leader to you? Is it someone you trust? Is it someone you like? Well, I think a leader is intelligent, brave, and sacrificial. I also think that Odysseus is an example of a great leader. First of all, Odysseus is a great leader because he is intelligent. A leader should be intelligent because they have to be able to figure out how to lead their people effectively. If you has a clueless leader, they might make poor choices and they could put your whole group in a bad position. Next, Odysseus is very intelligent because he can think fast on his feet to figure out how to help his men. Also when he thinks fast, his plans are still of good quality and they seem successful and not poorly thought out. Odysseus wouldn’t be called the man of many wiles if he wasn’t intelligent. Lastly, Odysseus proved his intelligence when he figured out how to get past the Scylla and Charybdis even though six people still lost their lives, he didn’t tell his men so that they didn’t freak out and try to fight or go slower and have more men be taken. Moreover, intelligence is part of what makes Odysseus such a great leader. Another characteristic …show more content…
They would have to be able to handle it calmly and smoothly. Next, Odysseus is brave because when something needs to be done and it could be bad and he will do it without hesitating. For example, when his men ate all of Helios’ cattle, he denounced them and let them face the consequences even though he wanted to keep him men alive despite what Tiresias told him about them all dying. Another of Odysseus being brave was when he fought and killed all 100 of the suitors that were trying to marry his wife and only had the help of 3 other people. He knew that if he didn’t kill the suitors, they might not leave his house or might kill him in order to marry his wife. These all show that being brave is important to being a great
Odysseus was a great leader and hero throughout the story in many examples as I have listed below. My first example is when Odysseus was able to make a spear when he was in Polyphemus's cave. He then took the spear and drove it through the eye of the beast, blinding him. The cyclops then moved the boulder and the men escaped by hiding under sheep. This example shows that O. is a hero because he is daring. If the cyclops was to find any of them or he had missed and woken him then this surely would have meant death for them. The second reason is in book twelve when O. must pass the sirens. To do so he slabs beeswax on the ears of his shipmates. This will make it so them can not be lured into the captivity of the sirens. O. then lashes himself
Odysseus is an epic hero, he is a natural leader and at some points in the book smarter than everyone else. After stabbing the cyclopes in the eye and the cyclopes moving the boulder Odysseus had to think of a way to get his men out safely and this quote shows his intelligence and leadership skills "I tied them silently together, twining cords of willow from the cyclops's bed; then slung a man under each middle one to ride there safely,
One of Odysseus’ traits is bravery. One example of Odysseus’ bravery is when he injures a Cyclops that is 5 times his size, “I drew it from the coals and my four fellows/ gave me a hand, lugging it near the Cyclops/ as more than natural force nerved them, straight forward they sprinted, lifted it, and rammed it/ deep in his crater eye. 329-332” This quote shows how brave Odysseus and his men are to face the Cyclops. Odysseus was intelligent to think about this idea, but
Bravery was probably one of the traits Odysseus was known for best. Without his bravery, the story most-likely wouldn't have been as exciting and suspenseful as it was. One of the situations that displayed this trait was when they landed on the
In the epic poem The Odyssey written by Homer, Odysseus is a good leader because his men put their faith and loyalty in him and Odysseus can use his wits to get his men out of deadly crises.
Throughout the entire book Odysseus shows that he as an amazing leader. “ Nine whole days we sailed, nine nights, nonstop”- Odysseus, (P. 231, L. 32.) Odysseus leads his crew to new lands always getting
Odysseus should not be considered a good leader because he doesn’t care about his crew and lets them die for his mistakes. When Odysseus and his crew rob the Cyclops of many items, a crew member suggests,“Why not take these cheeses, get them stowed, come back, throw open all the pens, and make a run for it” (149-151). They get a lot of treasure from the Cyclops and have the opportunity to leave with the treasure without getting caught. Though, Odysseus’ pride and curiosity tells him,“Ah, how sound that was! Yet I refused. I wished to see the cave man, what he had to offer- no pretty sight, it turned out, for my friends” (153-156). A good leader would have thought about what the repercussions of his actions may lead to, but Odysseus didn’t seem to have this thought process as a leader. Deciding the do only what he wanted, without consulting his crew, tells them to see the Cyclops. It is a very dangerous move because it could get the crew killed and only a bad leader would guide their crew straight to their death. Since it says “no pretty sight…for my friends”, we can assume something bad happened to Odysseus’s crew. Anything that happened was the effect of Odysseus’s inability to care for his crew and to stop playing with their lives like pawns. Thus, since the reason behind the loss of Odysseus’s crew members was Odysseus’s fault and his carelessness, we can conclude that he is a bad leader who doesn’t look
Odysseus was an effective leader for many reasons. one example was when Odyssey use his mind to get his men’s out of hades. one example was when he help his mans get to safety. he was an Effective leaders and in this part of the story,Odysseus men were scared of of the Hades, and they did not think Odysseus would make it back,so he told them not to worry, i will make it back and he tells them to leave if he doesn’t make it back to the ship. another example was when Odysseus and his men were stock in cave with the one eye monster.
In Homer's epic, The Odyssey, Odysseus and his men narrowly escaped the Cyclops demonstrates And that he is a fighter which proves he is an effective leader. An example quick thinking can be seen in the quote, “ My ship? Poseidon lord, who sets the earth a tremble, broke it up on the rocks at your lands end” ( 273- 275).
Not only was he the things described, but he was also a very boastful man, which isn’t a very good characteristic for a leader like himself. This shows that Odysseus was a good leader at times and he was a bad leader too, which
A leader is someone that you look up to. Someone that dramatically impacts your country or state by making good decisions and keeping the city contained. The leader is so important that without them the city will go into a lapse. A great example of what happens to a city with a leader missing in action would be Ithaca. Ithaca’s leader was Odysseus. When Odysseus leaves the island to go fight in war he doesn’t return for seventeen years. In that long amount of time Ithaca turns into a corrupt society where many have forgotten their responsibilities. Not only had Ithaca change but his family as well as a result of what was happening during Odysseus’ voyage.
In my eyes Odysseus is a great hero because he is a leader, he is smart, and he is cunning. My claim is supported by quotes taken from The Odyssey. I also believe that Odysseus did some things wrong but he became stronger because of it and eventually he was going to do everything he could to try and get himself and his men hime safeley.
In The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus demonstrates three important traits of leadership; creativity, courage, and intelligence. For example, Odysseus displayed creativity in “The Cyclops”. Odysseus used his creativity to save his men from Polyphemus, a terrible cyclops, by coming up with the idea to blind Polyphemus with a stake, to escape his cave. Without careful planning and creative thinking, Odysseus would not have been able to lead his men to safety and they all would have died as prisoners of Polyphemus. Additionally, Odysseus displayed his courage in “The Land of the Dead”.
Odysseus is a courageous leader because he saves his crew in combat many times. One way Odysseus shows he is a courageous leader is by proving his worth in combat. Odysseus is obviously a good fighter because he survived the Trojan War, if he had not have been a
One of the biggest traits Odysseus shows throughout the story is his bravery. The whole story Odysseus shows his courage. Taking every mission knowing there could be death; Odysseus still did not give up. Odysseus did whatever it took to make back to Ithaca for his wife and son. Odysseus showed courage by outsmarting the Cyclops. Odysseus went to the land of the dead just to bury a dead shipmate with no fear. But Odysseus showed his every bit of bravery when planning and fighting against the suitors. Odysseus set up plans to kill all the suitors with only 3 people with him. Odysseus refused to back down from the suitors so when the time came he was prepared. When all the suitors were killed Odysseus and his family had finally reunited. After 20 years of Odysseus bravery had all paid off. That’s why I think Odysseus shows he has lots of bravery throughout the story.
