In Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, “Dracula Untold” directed by Gary Shore, and Oedipus the King by Sophocles we observed tragic heroes whose tragic flaws consisted of hubris. Oedipus greatly proved his confidence produced by pride as shown in the quote, “’Here I am myself- you all know me, the world knows my fame: I am Oedipus.’”(264)The quote show his obvious confidence in himself, as not many people refer to themselves as world famous. He is not joking when he refers to himself and all his greatness. Okonkwo
Gaytan 3 also proves pride can lead to confidence with this quote, “Okonkwo was well known throughout the nine villages and even beyond. His fame rested on solid personal achievements. As a young man of eighteen he had brought honor to his village by throwing Amalinze the Cat. Amalinze was the great wrestler who for seven years was unbeaten, from Umuofia to Mbaino. “(Shmoop.com). These achievements surely mad Okonkwo very confident in himself. This did not only make him confident in himself as a person, but also as a warrior. Pride is also directly related to building confidence.
So is pride a good or a bad trait? It is an amazing trait! Having pride allows a person to reach great things. It can serve as a motivator, a confidence booster, leadership enhancer, and many more things. All of the tragic heroes presented proved that pride is a necessary and vital human
According to the theologians, pride is the worst of the seven deadly sins. therefore having pride in what you do is all about motivation. Getting motivated and doing something you love to achieve full potential is in a human nature. Scientifically spoke, it all begins from the bunch of chemicals that is happening in your brain. While all animals produce basic emotions like fear and anger, humans have highly developed social emotions, such as shame, guilt and pride which involve an awareness of what other people think and feel about us. The serotonin is the chemical that produces happiness in your brain.
Pride can be both beneficial and detrimental. Pride is the feeling of intense satisfaction because of one’s achievements. In the play, The Crucible by Arthur Miller, Miller shows different types of pride throughout the play. Miller shows examples of good pride, bad pride, and mixed pride through various characters in the play. He wants us to learn the difference between the good pride and the bad pride so we can focus on the good.
Pride is a trait everyone poses, but is having pride and being boastful a double edge sword? Pride and boasting are something that appears in many different characters with different manifestations through literature. In "Beowulf" and "Lanval", the pride and boastfulness are demonstrated as both a strength and weakness. Having the pride to boast caused many issues for Beowulf, Lanval and the Queen Guinevere.
Pride can be a good thing at times, but never have to much of it. It could get in the way of many things. Which is what happens in Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst, when Brother's pride gets in the way of excepting his little brother Doodle. Doodle was born premature and can't do the things that Brother can do. Brother doesn't like the fact that Doodle is so slow at doing things. He threatens him, makes him feel bad for the way he is, pushes him to limits that could really hurt Doodle. Have pride but not so much to where it starts effecting the people around you. Reason #1
Pride is defined as a feeling of deep pleasure or satisfaction form ones own achievements. Pride has plagued individuals for centuries whether it is Napoleon trying to invade Russia at Waterloo or Hitler refusing to admit defeat in World War 2. Pride is the downfall of the normal man as well as the downfall of great leaders of history. One example of pride being the downfall of an individual was the case of DC Stephenson in the 1920’s. DC Stephenson was charged with a murder he thought that he could get away with. What made him think that he could get away with it and how did it affect society of the 1920’s?
The short story, “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst, shows pride in both a positive and negative way. This can be seen in the beginning of the story when the narrator describes his motivations to help teach Doodle how to walk. The narrator states, “I was embarrassed at having a brother of that age that couldn’t walk, so I set out to teach him” (Hurst 557). This is a negative portrayal of pride. This shows that the narrator’s pride got in the way of his love for his brother, and because he was worried about how other see his brother, he couldn’t be proud of what his brother truly was. His pride forced him to change his brother. Though this is a negative portrayal of pride, the author also incorporates positive pride as well. This is shown when
What is pride, is it a good thing? Pride is a feeling or deep pleasure or satisfaction derived from one’s own achievements, the achievements of those with whom one is closely associated, or from qualities or possessions, that are widely admired. According to Paul Bryant, “If you believe in yourself and have dedication and pride and high, but so are the rewards,”which means pride is a good thing. According to C.S. Lewis”Pride gets no pleasure out of having something, only out of having more of it than the next man… It is the comparison that makes you provide the pleasure of being above the rest.
In the short story, “The Scarlet Ibis,” the author, James Hurst, uses the words, “a wonderful, terrible thing” to describe pride. The narrator learns that while pride motivates people to move past their limitations to do fascinating things, pride can also lead them to do horrible actions, or worse. Pride is a positive emotion that humans feel when they achieve a goal or accomplish a difficult task, or in other words, pride represents one’s dignity.
“I did not realize then that pride is a wonderful, terrible thing, a seed that bears two vines, life and death.” The narrator of the short story, “The Scarlet Ibis”, by James Hurst, showed very clearly that there are 2 different sides to pride.” The author s“There are two kinds of pride, both good and bad. ‘Good pride’ represents our dignity and self-respect. ‘Bad pride’ is the deadly sin of superiority that reeks of conceit and arrogance.” This is a quote from John C. Maxwell about good and bad pride. This topic of good and bad pride comes from the book “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst. This book explains how having too much pride in one’s self can create a negative product, or a positive product, as shown by the character Doodle and his brother. This is a story that shows how two younger brothers both have a heap of pride in themselves and each other and eventually learn how it can affect a person. The author of “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst, proclaims that “Pride is a wonderful, terrible thing” to own. He shows the reader this through the two main characters, Doodle and his
Pride is a dangerous trait to have for it can point toward the wrong path of life. To have pride in moderation is perfectly fine, but if pride engulfs one's being, then it can harmful. When one takes pride on a project that they worked hard on and earned a good grade, then the pride is controlled. However, /if that pride grows, it makes one arrogant to others and their opinions. Such as Creon’s pride did; throughout the play he ignored other people’s thoughts and opinions because he believed that he was always right.
Pride— the achievements of those with whom one is closely associated, or from qualities or possessions that are widely admired by others. Having pride however, does not always make a person seem admirable or desired. Within The Crucible, there are numerous accounts of pride underlined in the plays theme, as well as in the characters traits. John Proctors pride has a significant importance in his character development, as well as the theme of the overall play. Proctors change in behavior from the beginning of the play up until the end was clearly influenced from his pride For example, Proctors decision to tear up the document he signed confessing himself to witchcraft was a groundbreaking achievement in his character development.
Pride is a dangerous emotion that can cause ruin to all those that encounter it. In the short story written by Edgar Allan Poe, "The Cask of Amontillado," Montresor's pride is offended by Fortunato, a man he has forgiven for various offences time and time again. Montresor formulates a deadly plan to exact revenge upon Fortunato for speaking ill of him. "The Cask of Amontillado" examines pride and how it can be very dangerous when it is a guiding force behind people's decisions and other emotions (Poe 221).
Pride or hubris is part of the warp and woof of the human experience. From Satan (picture) and the Tower of Babel (picture) in the Judeo-Christian tradition to Achilles (picture) and Icarus (picture) in the Greco-Roman tradition, pride has led to the downfall of many and the suffering of countless.
Most people have these feelings or opinions without even realising it. Pride is a feeling of satisfaction that you have done well, however, it can also mean that you feel better than others. Pride can be linked to vanity, which can be described as a feeling of excessive pride regarding aspects of yourself, for example, your looks or abilities.
Now pride comes in various shapes and instance for everyone, but they can all have a common source. Some of the most common things I and possibly others have a connection to are sports, work, people and possibly sexual orientation. Though there are so many different possibilities or interconnecting occurrences within these topics, that I could feel pride. Some are more prideful in one instance than another, but it does not take away from any lesser situation either. With these only being a handful of prideful occurrences, as there are too many to name.
