In literature we see a wide variety that sometimes seem that may not connect but it does. For example Edward, Edward Scissorhands , and Lennie, Of Mice and Men, are very similar characters. Although Edward Scissorhands and Of Mice and Men are two different stories with two very different situations they have a lot of similarities. In the movie Edward Scissorhands and the book Of Mice and Men, both main characters have caretakers who at one point had regrets on taking care of them. Edward’s dad, creator, passed away leaving him all alone in the mansion until Peg, Avon seller, goes to the mansion looking to make a cell but instead she notices that he is all alone and takes him home. They all looked out for him. Curley loved picking fights with bigger guys. One night he attacks Lennie but Lennie didn’t defend himself until George told him to. Lennie ends up breaking Curley’s arm. Both George and Lennie are scared that they would have to leave because of the fight but Slim tells them “ ‘This punk sure had it comin’ to him’ ”(Steinbeck 64.) Slim comes up with a cover story that Curly got his arm stuck in a machine and that’s how it broke. Because everyone thought Edward broke into Jim’s house to rob him, and that he purposely hurt Kim and her brother, Kevin, the whole neighborhood went after him. After Curley’s wife’s body was discovered everyone went after Lennie. George ends up killing Lennie. In the movie Edward Scissorhands and the book Of Mice and Men, both main characters have caretakers who at one point had regrets on taking care of them. Edward has an attraction to Kim, Peg’s daughter, which just brings tragedies like Lennie’s attraction to Curley’s wife. Both main characters had love and support in the beginning and towards the end everyone turned their backs on them and eventually went after
Relationships are based on give and take. Three things that Lennie contributes to his friendship with George and vice versa are easily shown through the text. Lennie contributes by being the main breadwinner, his strength, and how he understands George. Lennie is the main breadwinner because he is strong and a fast learner. Lennie’s strength helps and hinders the friendship. His strength can help with work but it can also hurt when he doesn’t realize how strong he truly is in fights. Lennie also understands George. George says multiple times that he wouldn’t be the same without his “brother”. George contributes with his brains, helping Lennie keep on track, and being a smooth talker. Lennie has got into a lot of trouble, but George is always there to save him. George is the one that is able to keep Lennie on track and get the jobs they need. His brains also help when he has to speak for Lennie, because if Lennie
There are more than 4.6 million people in the United States that suffer from intellectual disabilities. n the book Of Mice and Men written by John Steinbeck one of the main characters suffers from retardation.Lennie would have been better off in today's world than he was back in the 1930s.
some may argue George shouldn’t have shot him since they were companions. In chapter three slim and George talk about how Lennie is traveling around with George. Slim says, ‘“funny how you an’ him string along together”’(steinbeck 39) to George. Slim thinks Lennie and George's Friendship is unique. since most most migrants during the time period 1940's they usually traveled alone. From always traveling together George and Lennie have Built up a strong bond. However, Lennie had to die down because he was destructive. In chapter three Curley and Lennie have a heated conflict. Curley says to Lennie “‘Come on, ya big bastard. Get up on your feet. No big son-of-a-b is gonna laugh at me”’ (Steinbeck 62). Lennie after being hit over and over again, lennie grabs Curley’s hand and Breaks
In John Steinbeck’s work, Of Mice and Men, Lennie is compared to an animal multiple times which degrades from his sense of humanity and leads to a greater gap between George and himself causing Lennie to become almost nothing to the reader, and to the other characters in the story as well. While George has sharp figures and is precisely described, Lennie is shown as more animalistic, and not really given a lot of traits and characteristics. Also, the other people in the ranch/farm approach Lennie with fear and caution.
When he was fighting with Slim because he thought Slim was with her wife in the barn, Lennie crushed Curley's hand when he attacked Lennie, and now he can no longer do any more boxing. Lennie could have gotten in trouble because of this, since Curley gets angry easily, he and George could have lost the job or they would have tortured Lennie, proving that George did the right thing. Lennie caused many troubles, killing Curley’s wife and two animals and everyone would bully him after so George’s execution of Lennie can be justified. Lennie is so strong that sometimes he forgets about it and accidentally hurts someone, which causes trouble for Lennie and George both. He accidentally killed Curley’s wife, a puppy and a mouse.
Lennie small is a large strong, and un intelligent man. He rarely thinks for himself and can’t hold his own. He does not understand Who you can laugh at or when you can laugh which makes him not have any social awareness. Lennie also never learns throughout the course of this story. He never learns to stay away from some people. For All these reasons we are sympathetic for him.
Everyone has had a caretaker or guardian to protect and care for them at some period in time. Developing into an adult is often times when a person becomes able to live independently. However, this is not the case for Lennie Small from the story, “Of Mice and Men” as a result of his disability. Being dependant on other people, Lennie needs a caretaker because of the lack of family to protect him. Someone without family relation, George, rises to the position as his caretaker in the harsh, unforgiving circumstances they have at the moment. Dreaming of a better future, George has to carry Lennie from job to job in order to eventually collect enough money to finally claim their land as their own. George has good, honest intentions for Lennie and only strives to give him the best conditions even if it meant he had to pull the trigger against him.
Is the love of your friend unconditional? Would you care for them if they were mentally retarded? What if they had unpredictable behavior that could be lethal to others? This was the daily life and burden of George in Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. George and Lennie are great friends that are two migrant workers in California during the 1920s. George is physically a small man that takes care Lennie. Lennie is unaware of his largeness and strength that has a gentle heart and likes to pet soft things. The story begins when the two men are dropped off by a bus two miles away from the destination of the farm they are going to work at. George and Lennie stop by a river to get a drink of water before they walk to the farm. When George takes a sip of water, he notices that Lennie is hiding something in his pocket. So George asks Lennie what it is, Lennie pulls out a dead mouse. Lennie says that it feels soft and he likes to pet it. George, out of fear, takes the dead mouse and throws it into the river. George tells Lennie that he could get really sick from the mouse.
The Story Of Mice and Men is about two buddies that go on to find work or any kind of income. The only problem is that lennie, one of the main characters, has a mental disability. Thankfully George, the other main character also lennie’s best friend, is around to help lennie. In the story more characters come into play including a nice old man named candy who has been working on the farm for many years. Like George candy has to take care of his old dog that he raised from a pup. Unfortunately one of Candy’s so called buddies took the dog out and shot him for the dogs own good. In the end George also loses his closest pal. Through the story George and candy have some similarities and
In Of Mice and Men Lennie Small and his friend George Milton travel and work together as migrant workers on ranches bucking barley for a living. In contrary to his name, Lennie Small is a very large man with incredible strength. However, he is unaware of his own strength. Lennie’s strength is obviously helpful for work, but is harmful in other situations he is faced with and ultimately causes his death.
During the Great Depression, the Western United States was a bleak and dreary place. Much of the working population at the time were migrant workers, who worked as farmhands for wealthier farm owners. These migrant workers often suffered from terrible working conditions, and horrendously low wages. As George and Lennie drift from job to job in search of liveable conditions and steady pay, they experience the cruel reality that moving up in society is near impossible. Even when George manages to find stable occupations for he and Lennie, Lennie seems to inevitably cause a disturbance, forcing them to abscond immediately. With the strength of an ox, but the mind of a child, Lennie is an oblivious destroyer, who gets little sympathy from
In my opinion, Lennie Small is the most interesting character in Steinbeck's novel Of Mice and Men. Steinbeck does a very good job describing and characterizing Lennie's personality. Lennie's character is, indeed, quite unique. A large man with enormous strength, yet kind and childlike, he seems to find joy in simple life pleasures like petting a furry animal and making the water ripple. Lennie's greatest difficulty seems to be remembering; and it is the lack of the ability to remember that ultimately leads to his tragedy at the end of the book. In the novel, Steinbeck seems to reinforce Lennie's characteristics of strength, kindness, childlike manner, and somewhat animal-like personality.
I would like to thank everyone who has come here today to say goodbye to a dear friend of mine and yours. A friend who was kind. A friend who loved everyone.A friend. Lennie Small was my only friend. He was my family.
In the digital, literary, and real world, good friends support each other with encouraging words and pep talks. Parents, however, might be harsher and lecture their child or make decisions for them. To most people, a father or mother is not a best friend. In John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, George is a bad friend to Lennie because he acts like a parent and treats Lennie like a child. Various situations throughout this novel show how George feels like the father of a handicapped child and is obligated to take care of Lennie. This new role he takes on makes George act out against Lennie.
In the novella Of Mice And Men by John Steinbeck, the relationship between Lennie Small and George Milton is complex. Lennie and George are two companions who look for work and brave the hardships of the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression together. Although Lennie and George are both grown men, their relationship resembles more of a child and a single parent, or a boy and his dog. Lennie is portrayed as animalistic and childish through his behavior and Steinbeck’s comparisons. This reveals the crucial power dynamic in George and Lennie’s relationship.
