Drug Abuse in Central Ohio
Ohio is in a war against drugs like heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine, and crack cocaine. The battle against drugs is never ending: some ask is there a solution or a better way? Drugs cause an outstanding number of deaths a year, tear families apart, and cause Incarceration rates to rise. There are many solutions to this issue; however, will society act and take care of this? To help people with addiction, there is medications such as suboxzone, methadone and a shot called Vivitrol. As well rehabilitation is available to drug abusers, both inpatient and outpatient. The urgency to get drugs off the streets have grown tremendously over the past couple years, from the death rate and overdoses caused by drug addictions,

From Methadone clinics to Suboxzone doctors, there is something available that can help. The newest drug for heroin addiction is a shot called Vivitrol, it contains Naltrexone which is used to curbs cravings and helps the user through withdraws (source). Vivitrol is now available to addicts in rehab and in outpatient treatment centers; however, you must be drug free and alcohol free for 10 days before you can be given the shot. The only major concern with this shot is that if an abuser thinks that while on the shot he or she can use they are wrong. If drugs are abused while receiving this shot it is very dangerous and potentially life threatening. Suboxzone is another good source to help with withdraws; although, this drug can be very addictive. Methadone is a prescription that is prescribed by doctors to help heroin addicts with withdraws and to get off of drugs. Methadone can also be used to help control pain with people that suffer from chronic pain. The difference between the clinics, doctors and the shot is that, Suboxzone and Methadone are very addictive, where the shot has never been shown to cause addiction. As well, the shot blocks opioids and can also help with alcohol related addictions, the others do not. With all the help that is available why are so many people still suffering from drug addictions? The reason that so many people are still on drugs even with all the help available is because the cost of help is more than the cost of the
Many people do not understand why or how other people become addicted to drugs. Drug addiction is a complex chronic disease that causes impairment with the mind to express emotion, engage into physical activities and simply being one’s self. In fact, through scientific research, people understand more about how drugs work in the brain more than ever, and they also know that drug addiction can be successfully treated with some help from those who want change in the death rates amongst drug addict Americans. No one will ever truly understand why a person performs such deadly behaviors, but this is their way of crying out for help. It is time to take a stand and help those in need of escape from drugs and
There have been several news coverages on TV and social network about drug overdose of different cases recently and they have risen people’s concern about the problems of drug abuse national-wide. The drug abuse and opioid epidemic is not a new problem to the American society, actually it has been a serious problem for many years. So what is the situation of drug epidemic now, and how can we find effective ways to deal with this problem? A few writers who ponder this question are Nora D. Volkow, Dan Nolan and Chris Amico.
Perhaps it gets to be too big of a task before them to be rid of drugs completely, but whatever the reason, more heroin users will stay in treatment if it involves using methadone or another medication.
The Heroin and Opioid Epidemic Northeast Ohio Community Action Plan is divided into four parts; Prevention and Education, Healthcare Policy, Law Enforcement and Treatment. This action plan was developed by many local hospitals including the Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals as well with the Cleveland Division of Police, the Drug Enforcement Agency and many other health, law, and state agencies. This plan has immediate and long-term actions that will strengthen the community and bring the high rates of heroin related deaths down. This all starts with prevention and
Oklahoma meth abuse is a serious concern. In Oklahoma caucasian and American indian abusers are accounted for 97.6 percent of meth use. Meth is one of the most dangerous drugs in the world. More than 45 years ago President Richard Nixon announced and declared the nation is at war, that war was the "War on Drugs". Nancy Reagan campaigned heavily in the fight against drug use as well; her fight was that of teaching young children the slogan of “Just Say No”. The goals of the criminal justice system in the war on drugs have been a never ending fight against the sale of illicit drugs and that of combating drug abuse. We will discuss the increased resources spent on law enforcement and rehabilitation while making an attempt in understanding
If one traveled through the small quiet community of Monroe, MI you would probably never think that this town has a drug problem. From the outside it seems like a nice middle class suburb that might be ideal to raise a family. For those that reside here however, they know that there is a growing problem. There aren’t many families that haven’t been affected by heroin addiction in this small town. The drug has literally swept through this county like an angry mob of rioters bringing crime, death, and destruction with it, leaving many people in the community asking, “Why?”
Methadone clinics can be another solution to combat the ever growing heroin epidemic. Methadone is very similar to heroin as it provides the same high, but it blocks the brains reward receptors that are effected by heroin. This allows the user to detox slowly without little withdrawal symptoms that accompany it, rather than a dreadful recovery. The goal is to relieve heorin addict’s cravings and desire for heroin in a safe, legal manner. Addicts are only able to attain Methadone and have use of the clinics by having a prescription. Methadone has been around and proven to be affective since the 1960s, but only recently have clinics come into practice. There has been a rise of Methadone clinics popping up in neighborhoods where there are high
Another northwestern county in Ohio with a growing problem is Fulton which is located west of Lucas. In addition to the heroin problem, 8% of the county’s 6-12 graders have admitted to taking prescription medication in order to receive a high (Coehrs). That’s just one county that has children under 18 taking medication to find a high. This high can lead to trying to locate a more powerful drug when the effects are not the same. People switch to heroin because it’s cheaper than prescription medication (Coehrs). Once people are addicted to their prescribed medication and can’t afford to keep supplying it for the addiction, they try and see a cheap alternative which happens to be heroin but heroin brings more of a risk. There are some addicts that want help but, many addicts can’t locate a place for help when
In 2010 there were 23.5 million people in the United States addicted to drugs or alcohol, but only 11 percent of them received treatment for their addiction, leaving the remaining 89 percent of addicts not getting help with their addiction (“New Data Show Millions” 2010). This is clearly a problem that the government has to address and fight. There are really two ways of going about fighting drug addiction, the traditional approach of fighting the supply of drugs and being hard on crime or try to rehabilitate people using rehabilitation. Each of these tactics is usually more focused on by one of the major parties/administrations of republicans and democrats, and by either president Trump or Obama. Either of these strategies may work on its
The city of Philadelphia is home to some of the richest and most influential history the United States has to offer, but it’s also home to a very large crime rate. Heroin and opioids have been largely abused for continuous decades in cities like Philadelphia throughout the world and the law needs to come down with harder sanctions to combat this issue. This is largely in part because crime simply leads to more crime. Another reason why more rigid law structure needs to be centralized around heroin and opioid abuse is that previous addicts from all sorts of backgrounds rarely maintain remission, but end up relapsing. In fact, heroin is one of the most addictive drugs in the world. Not to mention, basic necessities within the city, such as public space for its residents, have transitioned to heavily policed areas due to drug use. The conjunction of all these issues demands for more firm and rigid laws which will help to diminish drug use in America.
Data from this survey shows heroin addiction as the primary reason many residents of the state sought treatment in 2015; with 30.6% of all enrollments that year reporting heroin as their primary substance of abuse. If you or someone you care about is struggling with addiction problems in Middleburg Heights, Ohio you don’t need to wait to get help. In fact, doing so will only cause the situation to become direr. Local drug rehab programs in Middleburg Heights and the surrounding area offer a solution to addiction problems. These treatment centers provide outpatient care, partial hospitalization, mental healthcare, residential treatment and many other rehabilitation
Drug abuse is something that has plagued Americans over the years and continues to be an issue today. The hippie culture of the 1960s contributed to a rise in drug abuse. In addition, the Vietnam war created an awareness that servicemen were coming back to America addicted to Heroin. The Drug Abuse Prevention Treatment & Rehabilitation Act “states that control of drug abuse requires the development of a comprehensive, coordinated long term federal strategy that encompasses both effective law enforcement against illegal drug traffic and effective health programs to rehabilitation victims of drug abuse”(US Legal, 2016, para 2). The Harrison Narcotic Act of 1914 was the first ban on the distribution of drugs and in 1919 the alcohol prohibition
People tend to believe that once someone is caught up in heroin addiction that there is no hope or way out. These people are wrong and obviously have not seen the success stories out there when it comes to addicts that were able to stop heroin addiction.
Drug use in America is one of the major issues we face and the problem has skyrocketed over the past three decades. Heroin and painkiller addictions exceed all other countries. It is important that we address some of the causes that lead to the abuse, how to treat the abuse, and how to prevent the distribution of illegal prescription drugs.
