Dunklin Professor Watkins History 102 December 2, 2014 Things Fall Apart In the novel “Things Fall Apart” a man who was viewed as a warrior defeated many people in his town which caused people to fear him. He often came off as a man without emotion which caused people to remain clueless as to if he truly cared for them or not. Okonkwo grew up seeing that his father was weak, and in no way did he set a great example of how a man provides for his family and acts as the head of a household. Okonkwo made a promise to himself that he would not be anything like his father, but from the text it is clear that he took it a little too far. Many people liked him for the simple fact that he was basically the town’s personal security. No one in the town could defeat him, and after he defeated the cat no one even wanted any conflict with him. In my head, I painted a picture of Okonkwo being this huge, muscular man with a temper quick as the marvel super hero Flash. If I was a resident in the town of which he lived, he would not be someone would I want to associate with. He comes off as being this know-it-all that is so afraid to show affection that he covers it up with the attitude of being a man who is big and bad. Overall, the character was not a likeable one. This was definitely the moment where his life began to change. To add, while attending Ogbuefi Ezeudu’s funeral, Obonkwos’s gun went off and accidently killed the deceased warrior’s son, which was also another sign of change. After this incident, Okonkwo was forced to leave the town for 7 years. He moved his family to his mother’s town and while they were gone all of their things were destroyed. To him this was very embarrassing. All of his life, he only wanted to be everything that his father was not. There was a time in his life where he had respect, people feared him, and he was the representation of a very dominant figure in his family; but from the time he killed his son and Ezeudu’s son the townspeople begin to not only lose respect for him, but he was no longer someone that the people sought for protection.
