Someone does not need a badge, trophy, or masses of monuments to be a hero, unlike, the common thought; or at least what most inspire to believe. Many will classify a hero with a prize or glory, but realistic heroes do not require either. Once a hero, always a hero is in many cases: Benedict Arnold is one of those cases. Benedict Arnold is a hero who did not have a gallery of badges in the beginning, and built his way up. When classifying Benedict Arnold as a hero or a traitor, Arnold is clearly defined as a hero. Benedict Arnold, a true hero, is a leader to soldiers, altruistic for prosperity, and courageous to his peer rebels.

A great example of an Anglo-Saxon hero is Beowulf from “Beowulf,” written by an unknown author. In this poem, Beowulf exemplifies the characteristics of an Anglo-Saxon hero because he was brave and courageous, he had superhuman strength, and he had a unique sense of justice.

Yes, Winston Smith should definitely be considered as a hero. Winston Smith is the main character of George Orwell’s “1984”. He is a member of the Outer Party and is being ruled by the Inner Party. Because those who do not follow Big Brother are vanished and never seen again, he has to pretend that he is one of Big Brother’s loyal followers. Because all of the citizens know that they are being watched at all times, nobody seems to have enough courage to rebel because they think that they will either be tortured or vanished. Winston eventually becomes frustrated with the strict laws of the Party and decides to rebel.

Every individual has a different perspective on what makes a person a hero, for it is not limited to a certain concept; determination, altruism and a hint of hardship and bravery can always birth a hero. Although many acts of heroism are seen and made everyday, the levels of these attributes vary. Abraham Lincoln and Harriet Tubman are both philanthropic, noble individuals that willingly spent their lives as abolitionists of slavery, and both are great examples of the highest levels of selflessness and heroism.

Throughout history, Cromwell has been portrayed in very different lights, especially in Great Britain. It is an undeniable fact that Cromwell contributed some good to his country. For instance, numerous laws were made less severe and politics as well as justice less corrupt. In matters of religion, he granted freedom of worship. Yet, after his death Cromwell was seen as a tyrant and a king slayer and the people were tired of living under such strict rules. Regarding politics, debates arose about what effect he had on the political system after his death. It is incontrovertible that his rule was one of the turning points in British history, as Cromwell ensured that a king would never be able to rule on his own.

William Wilberforce, an English politician, fits our class definition of a hero in many ways because of something incredible he did to help others. Wilberforce fought for what he knew was right for the betterment of others, was selfless, was a leader, and left the world a better place than he found it. I hope to convince you that William Wilberforce fits many of the characteristics in our class hero definition, and should be put up on the “Wall of Heroes”. This statement is very true for the time of Anglo-Saxon culture and literature. A hero was like a god and was put on a pedestal far above the others. A hero brought peace to situations that were deemed impossible and brought joy to many people.

Well, what can I tell you about Oliver Cromwell? Like every other human he made mistakes but made some great changes to the country. However, Cromwell is a controversial figure, so fact isn’t enough to state whether he is a hero or a villain. Should he be seen as the Lord Protector of England, who saved them from Charles’ tyranny or as a cruel and harsh dictator is there a twist in the tale or is this just plain fact?
