Oprah Winfrey was born on January 29, 1954. After she was born her parents, Vernita and Vernon moved away from each other. Oprah was sent to live with her grandmother in Kosciusko, Mississippi with her parents, Vernita and Vernon. When Oprah was 6 years old she moved in with her mother in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Oprah’s life was very troubled, even at a young age. When she was 9 years old her cousin sexually abused her. Afterwards she was taken out for ice cream to insure that she wouldn't tell anyone. A couple of years later her uncle and a family friend sexually abused her. She decided to keep her sexual abuse a secret. She began focusing more on her public speaking and her education (“A Childhood Biography of Oprah Winfrey”). She even became an honors student (entrepreneur.com). In 1970, her hard work paid off when she received a four year college scholarship after winning an Elks Club competition (“A Childhood Biography of Oprah Winfrey”). In 1971, Oprah began attending Tennessee State University. While she was in college she started working in television broadcasting and radio. When Oprah moved to Baltimore, Maryland in 1976 and her career took off. She began hosting the TV show People Are Talking, she hosted the show for eight years. Then she started hosting her own show, A.M. Chicago, after she was offered the chance by Chicago TV. Oprah's main competitor at the time was Phil Donahae. Oprah's open and warm hearted personality got her 100,000 more viewers than Phil and put her show first in the ratings. Her talent and success landed her a role in the famous movie, The Color Purple. She won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, as a result of her amazing performance in The Color
