Optical Distortion, Inc. is a company that offers contact lens for chicken. Since chickens’ society has clear hierarchy, they will peck the one did not obey the rules, which is called cannibalism, causing death. ODI’s contact lens for chicken could efficiently reduce this behavior through reducing their visuals.
As the only company in current industry, ODI faces a problem about future marketing, including customer segmentation, locations of regional offices, pricing policy and the strategy of convincing farmers to use the new product.
Based on the case, the target customer should be the farms having flock size over 50,000 and the locations of regional offices should be in California, South Atlantic, Middle Atlantic and West South Central.

From the analysis above, the target consumers of ODI should be medium and large farms.
Marketing Analysis
• Locations of Regional Offices
According to Exhibit 3, California and South Atlantic are the top two areas that have significant difference in the number of farms having flock size over 50,000. Since these two locations contain about 45% of farm with flock size between 50,000 and 99,000 and about 46% of farms with flock size 100,000 and over, regional offices should be set and more selling effort should be invested. The specific numbers are as following: California South Atlantic Total Total Number of Farms Percentage in Total
Flock size 50,000-99,000 114 168 282 631 45%
Flock size 100,000 and over 87 70 157 345 46%
(Source: Exhibit 3)
Since four to five regional offices should be set, the other locations should be Middle Atlantic and West South Central. The specific numbers are as following: Middle Atlantic West South Central Total Total Number of Farms Percentage in Total
Flock size 50,000-99,000 55 77 132 631 21%
Flock size 100,000 and over 29 42 71 345 21%

Since less farms than California and South Atlantic’ exist in these two areas, selling efforts could be invest less, either.

“There are 3,000 ranchers growing around 300,000 ostriches in several states like Texas, California, Arizona, Indiana, and Illinois.” (Watson, “Ostrich Farming Grows in Popularity”) This was stated by Mac Young, the executive director of the American Ostrich Association; it shows that multiple ostriches are on farms, and that it is very common in some states.
Organic ranchers and dairy farmers in California also feel the effects of the drought. They rely on green pasture to feed their animals a healthy diet. Due to the lack of rain, the pasture are drying up and the ranchers have to purchase supplemental organic hay from other states. In an attempt to fund the purchasing of this out of state hay, the organic farmers are selling herds to businesses for hamburger meat and the small
In the U.S., the concept of factory farms primarily involving animals such as pigs, cattle and chicken began in the 1920’s as a way to increase efficiencies by capturing
In the Sutter County, most of the land are consider as farm land. The total percentage of farmland is about 97%. It almost cover the entire county. Therefore, agriculture farming is playing a key role of the county economic, especially the crop sales. In the terms of types of land in farms, there is not surprising that cropland is one of the bigger share in the county. But moving on to the State of California, pasture is the number one type of land and it contains half of the total percentage. The reason that California is surprising me because of the market value of products sold. Even though pasture is the number one type of the farmland in California, the livestock
The July 2015 Cattle on Feed report found the number of cattle on feed in large feedlots to be slightly more than 10 million, as reported by the Capital Press. That number is up
The industrial park, which would ideally be located in the eastern coastal province of Zhejiang, would be capable of holding up to 12,000 cattle at one time.
With the rapid rise of the industrial food animal production system, an increasing number of food animals once raised on pastures are now raised
Alabama is a leader in the United States of America in agriculture. According to Alabama Agri-culture Statistics supplied by the United States Department of Agriculture, Alabama was ranked 3rd in broiler production, 2nd in catfish sales and 14th in egg production in 2011. Although the number of farms has drastically dropped from about 225,000 farms spanning over 22 million acres in 1950 to 50,000 farms spanning 7.5 million acres in 2010, Alabama still remains a leader in the field of agriculture. Nationally and locally the drastic decrease can be traced to the installa-tion and expansion of CAFOs. Defined by the EPA, a CAFO is an “agricultural operation where animals are kept and raised in confined situations (EPA 12).” In order to be qualified
Over the past few decades, livestock farming has gone through a dramatic transformation that has adapted to consumer wants and needs. Food production has shifted from small, family-owned farms to large agricultural farms. The larger farms often have corporate contracts, and meat and dairy products are produced with single species buildings or open air-pens. There are two different types of large farms: animal feeding operations (AFO) and concentrated animal feeding operation (CAFO). A CAFO raises animals for the consumption of eggs, meat, and milk. CAFOs usually contain a high density of animals and are large-scale industrial agricultural facilities (Hribar 1). CAFOs contain many animals in a confined space that have little or no access to
For consumers to be interested in ODI’s product, they would likely have to meet three conditions:
For centuries farming was primarily done by small farms owned by the families that lived there. Over the last few decades though the industry has shifted away from family farms and to CAFOs. CAFO stands for concentrated animal feeding operations and they are large commercial farms meant to maximize the amount of possible production. Since the 1960s the industry has shifted to CAFOs significantly. These facilities keep their animals tightly packed often in large buildings as close as possible while birds are often stacked on top of one another. Maximizing space, capacity and production being the goal, not living conditions.

has the potential to increase their competitive advantages by allowing such farms to charge higher prices for their crops, find new markets, and enter buying consortia that lower the prices of farm suppliers (Roe, Batte, & Diekmann, 2014). However, small American farms have lower rates of e-commerce adoption than do other small and medium enterprises (Briggeman & Whitacre, 2010). Greater competitiveness for small farms could represent a gain of hundreds of millions of dollars in efficiency and profit for the U.S. economy. The United Stated Department of Agriculture/National Agricultural Statistics Service (USDA/NASS) has not conducted any surveys soliciting data about the state of e-commerce adoption among small or large American farms, although there is general, cross-study agreement that anywhere from a fifth to a half of small farms are effective users of e-commerce (Briggeman & Whitacre, 2010; Dan & Qihong, 2014; Roe et al., 2014), not enough is known about precisely how and why farmers strategically manage e-commerce, to the extent that they use it at
This will allow Megan to share her experiences with you and tell the story behind where our food supply comes from. This is where they go above and beyond share the passion to those who will take their position in future generations. Being a part of this program where the exhibitor and membership numbers as high as NJSA is huge for them to get the future advocators that have the passion for the swine industry more involved on the other side of things. Per site they will have 6000 head. Every Monday and Thursday they will get 2000 head to come into the finisher. This is where it becomes a small world; all these hogs come from the gestation operation which is
California is an extraordinarily productive agricultural region with over 350 different crops are grown here and it has been the highest producing state over the past 50 years. (California Agricultural Production Statistics) Californian farmers have always proven their quick adaptation to new methods and technology; however, even after more than a decade of one of the most intensive research efforts, researchers are baffled on why Californian farmers are proving reluctant to adopt the beneficial conservation tillage farming practices that originated from the Midwest.
