Orr's Character Analysis

Jimmy knows too well the agonies of abandonment. First, when his mother, Cecilia, ran away with Richard to pursue a better lifestyle. Then, due to his father’s, Damacio Baca, alcoholisms and violent behavior; he also had to leave Jimmy behind. In spite of the drawbacks from abandonment to being a maximum security prisoner in Arizona State Prison, Jimmy preserver’s the darkness of prison by overcoming his illiteracy. However Cecilia and Damacio is not as fortunate as their child; Cecilia is shot by Richard after confronting him for a divorce and Damacio chokes to death after he is released from the detox center(Baca 263). Therefore the most significant event in this section of the memoir, A Place to Stand by Jimmy Santiago Baca is the death of Jimmy’s parents.

In The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller involves a character named John Proctor, an even-tempered farmer, who cared about how others saw him as. Procter was a married man to Elizabeth Proctor and a father of three as well. Throughout the book, Procter is shown as a man obsessed with his status to protect his name. The following quote says “... there is evidence to suggest that he had a sharp and biting way with hypocrites. He was the kind of man--powerful of body, even-tempered, and not easily led….”, this shows he was the type of a person to unleash his temper with people often, although it was good because he was well known for revealing hypocrisy. In Miller’s portrayal of the ghastly, sickening inquiry of witchcraft many people in the 1690’s were people of the township were maintaining guard for their beliefs; while others of the community of Salem were cowards who took the easy out of the accusations they were on trial. Ottawa- Dan Stoddard was doing what he does every day when he came across a woman who seemed to be in danger. He asked her what was wrong and she confided in him that she was being abused physically and emotionally and that she needed a phone. Stoddard could have very well ignored this women but he the just thing and called transit security. In the end, the police came and were able to take the woman to a safer place.

In the story, “A Separate Piece” by John Knowles, Gene thinks that Finny is trying to ruin his studies and Gene gets mad at him, but Finny actually wasn’t trying to ruin his studies but rather thought Gene was gifted enough to get by without having to study. In the story, Gene becomes jealous of Finny’s athletic ability and tries to be better than him by jouncing the limb of a tree, causing Finny to fall out of it and break his leg. Gene’s friendship with Finny is affected by the accident and also due to World War II. Finny falls again later in the story, this time down stairs, and breaks his leg a second time.

The book Beyond The Pale is about Two ordinary people (Travis Wilder and Grace Beckett) who get transported to this new and magic filled world that resembles earths medieval times. With there new found powers they hope to save this new world from its impending doom. (The pale king and his iron heart followers). I choose to write about Grace for my character analysis because I admire her intelligence, her cleverness, and her independent nature. Grace is intelligent because she always had a plan.

The short story Recitatif is about two different girls placed in a place in an orphanage. Their mothers unable to provide care. Twyla and Roberta, mothers’ reasons for their placement in St. Bonny orphanage was different, Twyla was neglected, and Roberta’s mother was ill. Despite the girls seemingly different up bring, they share a common bond, that racial divides cannot break. Morrison uses of symbolism in the short story “Recitatif” to convey Emulate the main character.

Rivalry can be playful and good natured, but it isn’t always this way. Rivalry and competition can help individuals grow as a person, and help them to develop into mature adults. Competition can be a motivator to do better. It can also lead to vast destruction, and severed friendships. Rivalry in this case is unhealthy, the overall outcome of the story proves this. Finny and Gene didn’t really have a ‘healthy’ rivalry or competition. Their relationship wasn’t healthy, and it eventually leads to the death of Finny. In “A Separate Piece” by John Knowles the rivalry between two friends turns unhealthy very quickly. The competition and rivalry between the two friends is destructive, it destroys their friendship,

A character’s perspective often changes the more they grow and develop. James Moloney’s award winning novel “A Bridge to Wiseman’s Cove”, follows the journey of awkward teenager, Carl Matt, as he leaves his hometown to stay with his manipulative aunt in a small beachside town. Throughout the text, Carl grows from insecure teenager to confident young man, which shifts his view of life. The novel uses dislocation, relationships, and events, to explore how Carl’s perspective changes as he develops as a character. The dislocation of the character early on in the novel forces Carl to become more open minded and less timid.

The Crucible, a play written by Arthur Miller, is about the Salem Witch Trials. Before the play begins, Abigail Williams, niece of Reverend Parris, had an affair with John Proctor. Proctor is the husband of Elizabeth Proctor, who recently fired Abigail because she found out about their affair. This leads Tituba, a slave to the Parris’ from Barbados, Abigail, and her friends to go into the forest and conjure spirits. Abigail had a plan to kill Elizabeth by drinking blood that Tituba had given her. This leads the town into a chaotic state, and the Salem Witch Trials begin. During such trials if someone was accused of coming in contact with the devil they were forced to confess, even if innocent, or they would have been hung. Factors such as the principles of the trails and the blaming of guiltless citizens led to the Salem Witch Trials, but the utmost responsibility for the death of innocent Puritans in Salem is endured by Abigail because of her selfish qualities, her affair with Proctor, and her involvement in being the first person to accuse an abundant amount of citizens.

In a drama, dynamic characters undergo changes in behavior, outlook, or attitude. Writer, Arthur Miller displays these changes in character John Proctor. The Crucible takes place in the small town of Salem, which goes through a time of what they believe was a devil takeover. John Proctor is introduced as a quiet yet firm and respected farmer, but by the end of act 4 Proctor is portrayed as courageous, due to him having enough of everyone and everything.
