This society is represented in Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaids Tale. The novel is set in the Republic of Gilead, a dictatorship, formerly known as the United States of America. The government controls all aspects of the lives’ of its citizens, with its harshest regulations directly affecting women.

The outlook on gender roles in today’s advanced society is in drastic contrast to the views portrayed in The Crucible, set in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1692. The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, depicts women as weak creatures, who are expected to submit to men, and whose only access to power is through dishonest means.

During the 1650s in Salem, Massachusetts, there were many beliefs about women perpetuated by society. They were considered to be impulsive, selfish and subservient. Women were pressured into conforming to these social standards. This is shown numerous times in Arthur Miller’s play, the Crucible. However, despite these social pressures, there were a number of instances where women we shown to have more power than men. The action of female characters were influenced by the beliefs, stereotypes and expectations promoted in their society.

It was also because of the town’s undivided obedience to their religion that those who ultimately decided who lived and died believed they were making the correct decisions. The literary technique indicating through which perspective a story is communicated or its world is experienced is referred to as the point of view of that story. Norman Friedman developed a theory which distinguishes seven points of view and in each text the narrator selects one of them. In this novel, the opening and ending indicate the presence of a selective omniscient narrator. First of all, the story is told by a third-person narrator who is omniscient.

In the novel Oryx and Crake, each of the main protagonists has a distinct attitude towards their society and everything that has happened. Given that each character has a very different personality and background, it would make sense that they all have different attitudes towards their changing society. Throughout the novel it is evident that society is going in the direction that Crake wants it to, while Oryx is unaware of the changes occurring around her, and everything in Jimmy’s life appears to be going the opposite of how he planned.

Atwood’s work Oryx and Crake is a science fiction story that deemphasizes the importance of a feministic society. Houvouras states that “...individuals who are actively engaged in activities that aim to ameliorate gender inequality” (247) are indeed feminists. This is not seen within the story “Oryx and Crake”, in fact we see that women are put on the back burner for the most part. The lack of feminism is duly noted with characters like: Sharon(Jimmy’s mother), Oryx, and the female Crakers. Women, both in stories and life, generally play the role of being submissive individuals who feel obligated to put others before themselves. These individuals do not know how to identify with a feministic approach to life.

Society throughout time has held particular values close to their hearts, which people are expected to respect at all times, though many do not necessarily agree with them. Death on the Nile, written by Agatha Christie in 1937, is about many upper-middle and upper class families enjoying a cruise until a murder occurred, and the story revolves around the murder case being solved alongside the different family values and perspectives around the case. Pride and Prejudice, written by Jane Austen in 1813, tells the story of Elizabeth Bennet, and her relationships between her family and families beyond her class and the issues that arise between the different class statuses. Agatha Christie and Jane Austen have similar perspectives on the values that the upper class hold dear, such as gender roles, importance of social status and reasons for marriage.
