“One cannot understand the scale of the son's ambition without appreciating his father's accomplishment.(71)” These words from The Looming Tower by Lawrence Wright conveys how Osama Bin Laden, the mastermind behind the horrible events of 9/11, was greatly influenced by his father. His father Mohammed bin Awad bin Laden was a very strict parent and raised his children under a rigid religious and moral code.This had an everlasting impact on Osama Bin Laden’s idealistic views as a Muslim and caused him to dislike anyone who disagreed with him. The events of 9/11 shocked the nation. One of the most highly acclaimed countries in the world was now lost and extremely vulnerable. The last terrorist attack on American soil had been ages ago dating back to Pearl Harbour in 1945, so far back that most Americans were not even alive to remember the incident. Now our nation was in a state of mourning, a feeling that does not come often. Everyone wondered if this was just the beginning or if it would lead to something more drastic. What was the motive or cause of this event? The answer lies in the past of their leader, Osama Bin Laden. Many critics have claimed that the terrorists in the Middle East just wanted to see us suffer and show that they are superior. Thus, they targeted the most symbolic places in our nation:the World Trade Center, the White House, and the Pentagon. His father,being a self-made construction billionaire, strived to have his children accomplish as much as he did. He was also a religious fundamentalist, teaching his children the ways and beliefs of the Muslim faith. He dealt with his children, especially his sons, as if they were adults, and demanded they become confident and self-sufficient at an early age. After his parents got divorced, Osama spent most of his childhood living with his mother and her new husband. In 1967, Mohammed died an unfortunate death in a plane crash. The death of Osama’s father left a greater impact on Osama than most people realize. His father-being a self- made billionaire- set the bar very high for Osama and his brothers.
