To achieve the full effect of managing for wildlife and timber, and individual must be very knowledgeable of both things. You must know how each species of wildlife is affected when harvesting timber in an area (Halterman, 1973). Wild turkeys have been known to use pine plantations that have been burned in the past 6 years, more than any forest type when nesting. These plantations are anywhere from 13 to 18 years old, with each of them being thinned at least one time (Smith, 1990). In conversation with one of the Macaw trainers at the Animal Kingdom exhibit, I was told to be careful in choosing the caging material type and surrounding environment (even a tree) for these Beautiful Macaws. They are known to be very destructive to trees in their aviaries, and are quite capable of biting into a coconut shell with their powerful beaks, so their cage must be heavy duty, typically Zoo Mesh or 1:1 steel mesh. The macaws in the images here were trained to fly in from more than a mile away, get their treats, and then take off and fly one foot above the heads of the people in the audience, which they did very nicely; all twenty of them! Macaws can have a 4-foot wingspan, giving the ability to fly at thirty-five MPH. The Macaws diet
It is a small bird of prey, 27-33 cm in length with a 63-72 cm wingspan. It looks very much like the larger Common Kestrel but has proportionally shorter wings and tail. It shares a brown back and barred grey underparts with the larger species. The male has a grey head and tail like male Common Kestrels, but lacks the dark spotting on the back, the black Malar Stripe (= a line angling back from the birds chin, separating the cheek from the throat stripe), and has grey patches in the wings. The female and young birds are slightly paler than their relative, but are so similar that call and structure are better guides than plumage. Both sexes do not have dark talons (claws) as usual in falcons; those of this species are a peculiar whitish-horn color.
