Othello Desdemona Relationship

A relationship is the way two people connect. As illustrated by Desdemona, the wife of Othello, and Emilia, the wife of Iago. But, which couple defines what a true relationship is? In particular, a bond that remains close together that would not let anything destroy it. In the play Othello, Desdemona is based on loyalty and love whereas Emilia is more experienced and realistic. They are both similar as Elizabethan women but in the form of attributes they are quite dissimilar. Desdemona holds more attributes in her marriage with Othello rather than Emilia. As a result, without these fundamental characteristics a bond is not able to improve. Thus, there are many characteristics present in a relationship that judge a marriage. Desdemona’s loyalty was shown when she blamed herself of her death and never blamed Othello to be the murderer. Moreover, she remained loyal when she laid on her death bed as shown, “I never did offend you in my life; never loved Cassio but with such general warranty of heaven as I might love. I never gave him token” (5.2.58-61). She remained loyal as she pledged she would when she married Othello and told him that she never gave Cassio any romantic love. In addition, this shows that her obedience was detrimental as it caused her to die. In the case of Emilia, it is shown that she never remained faithful to Iago. Furthermore, in the play it is shown that Emilia is obedient to her husband at the starting of the play and later it is shown that she is not. This reveals that Emilia is only loyal to the truth, as exhibited when she went against Iago and went with the truth, deceiving her husband. “Tis proper I obey him, but not now. Perchance, Iago, I will ne’er go home” (5.2.196-197). Emilia told everyone that she was loyal but not anymore because Iago crossed his limits.
