Chapter eight of Outliers is about what it takes to be successful. Based on the examples given in the chapter Gladwell is trying to convince the readers that persistence, hard work, dedication and having the mindset of achievement is what leads to success in life. In China, rice was cultivated thousands of years ago. Which spread to East Asia, Japan, Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan. This was a tedious job with no days off, but they had to do it in order to survive. They ate rice as meals, sold rice, and traded rice for other necessities. To push themselves to keep going and never give up, they would say things like “No food without blood and sweat,” and “No one can rise before dawn three hundred sixty days a year fails to make his family …show more content…

Even in the winter they kept busy by repairing the dikes in the rice paddies and rebuilding their mud hunts. They also did things to make money, such as making hats or baskets and selling them in the market. Quote:
The Asian number system is much more logical than the English number system. The language in the Asian number system is consistent; making it easier to memorize, which may be the reason “Four-year-old Chinese children can count, on average, to forty. American Children at that age can count only to fifteen, and most don’t reach forty until heir five” (Gladwell, 2002, p. 229). I did not find it difficult to summarize the chapter because what I was writing came from me. I didn’t have to quote the anything, and I didn’t need to find evidence to prove my point. It was my personal thoughts of what I remember and understood from what I read. I did find it difficult to paraphrase because in my opinion the writer said it best, therefore changing what Gladwell wrote and trying to make it sound better or just as good, was a struggle. The only thing I found difficult about quoting is the difference between MLA format and APA format. I can never seem to remember how to cite books, articles etc., there are so many rules and it gets
