I. Speech Overview:
A. General Goal: To inform.
B. Specific Goal: By the end of my speech, my audience will understand the real illness that is depression and how much it does deal with my generation and the toll it has had on us and how to deal with it.
II. Introduction: (This is where you start talking)
A. Attention Grabber: In the second grade, after a really, really close family friend had passed away I realized that my days were kind of gloomy and that my always positive mindset had drifted off into a place even now I can’t reach, I tried and tried being happy but no matter what I just couldn’t see the world as the gum drop and rainbow type of place I thought it was, and on a Sunday, on October 25th, 2015, after about 9 years of feeling this way, I have been medically diagnosed with depression.
B. Relevance Statement: According to Medical Author: Roxanne Dryden-Edwards, Depression is the leading cause of suicide. In a national survey of high school students, nearly 20% of teens thought about attempting suicide, and more than 8% made a suicide attempt. Over half of all kids who suffer from depression will eventually attempt suicide at least once, and over 7% will die as a result.

Throughout the nation and our world people are suffering from this disease. Depression affects people of both genders, all ages, and any background. The history of mental illness, specifically depression were extremely helpful in today’s treatment and diagnosis. We know that all individuals are different and because of this, we can assume that each case of mental illness, more specifically depression, is unique in its own way as well. One treatment that is very effective for one person may not be equally as effective in a similar case simply because of the differences in patients. History, types of depression, symptoms, and treatments are all equally important in finding ways to help one who is suffering from depression.

American youth have more risk to mental disorders due to race, sexuality, family, and stress of fitting in with their surroundings. Many mental illnesses will lead to suicidal thoughts or eventually to an attempt at suicide. Anxiety and the pressure to fit in contributes greatly to depression and suicide, particularly in high school. During youth, it's especially hard to find who you are, and still have the risk of getting made fun of or being bullied. CENTRAL IDEA: Today I am here to talk to you about the symptoms, treatment and how to cope with depression in your daily life.
Teens who experienced traumatic events in their childhood are more likely to commit suicide. According to The Mayo Clinic ( 2017), studies show that teens who are victims of divorce, rape, or abuse are at a higher risk of attempting suicide. However, teens with mental health issues are most likely to commit suicide. Depression is the leading cause in health issues among teens. Deriving from home life, alcohol and drug use, friendships, school, and other attributes.
Depression is a common and serious mood disorder. It’s more than just feeling down or sad in response to life’s struggles and setbacks, depression causes people to lose pleasure from daily life, can increase the risk of many health problems, and can even be serious enough to lead to suicide. The disease must be given more attention and treated as a global public health priority. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 7.6 percent of people over the age of 12 have depression in any 2-week period. Depression is also the second most common cause of disability worldwide after back pain,according to a review of research.
The leading cause of suicide is depression, as stated by the Suicide, Prevention Awareness and Support NPO. Whilst depression does have a genetic these cultural somethings are amplified due to social media. People construct a facade appearing happy and those who don’t experience the same happiness doubt themselves, often leading to depression and other negative feelings. Media portrays a false sense of reality perpetuated by a societal need to fit it. Those who chose to commit suicide often do so out of isolation and thus this exacerbates the negative ideology around suicide.
There is at least 113 suicides each day or 1 every 13 minutes. Suicide among males is the seventh leading cause of death and the fourteenth leading cause in females. Most suicides are with a firearm and are carried out with a “ Saturday night special”. Stress is the number one cause among our youth, bullies, peer pressure, depression, and abuse. 41,100 people committed suicide in the United States in 2013. Our young teens today does not take time to look deeper into there problem and to seek out a better solution. They are looking for a quick fix but not realizing once the trigger is pulled the result is final with no turning back. Most people who has attempted suicide is more likely to try a second attempt and most have an underlying mental illness. There is many warming that someone may be in a suicide crisis. We most learn how to see things through their eyes. No matter what one is facing in life or the difficult that lie ahead of them Nothing is worth taken your own
There is an illness like none other, that sweeps across nations but is not contagious. It withdraws any and all feelings of all from from every area of life. Many experience it after a specific situation that elicits extreme sadness, loss, or pain. Other’s feel it for no apparent reason and are left seemingly to fend for themselves in the only dark abyss that they know. This malady is known as depression affects many people of all kinds every singly year. If the world knew how depression truly affects its victims, it would realize it’s not merely a mood or emotion one experiences, but rather a true and physical disease.
Specific Purpose: Persuade my audience to take steps to realize the truth behind mental illnesses instead of listening to the stigmas.
There is other evidence of high rates of suicide among teenagers done from other sources that have similar results. Over the years, the number of suicides have substantially increased. Certain individuals are at a higher risk of committing suicide. Those risk factors can include: “bullying, physical abuse, family history of suicide, family history of child maltreatment, previous suicide attempts, history of mental disorders, particularly clinical depression, history of alcohol
Did you know suicide is one of the leading causes of death in the United States? Teens suffering from depression is more likely to commit suicide than other teens. The effects of suicide can be very tragic to the family and the person trying to commit it. There is ways to prevent suicide with therapy and medicine. There is also very important signs to tell if someone is going to commit suicide.
Have you ever wondered what really causes depression? Or how people are even depressed and not just sad? The reason I chose this topic is because I have depression. Not only that but I only know a limited amount of this disorder, and also considering the fact that depression runs along side both of my mom’s and dad’s side of the family. My curiosity grows as I wonder, what does this really mean? Why was i diagnosed with depression? Is depression permanent or can it be cured? How? Where does depression come from? On this journey as i take you into the world of mental health knowledge, you will also get to know a little bit about depression, and maybe answer some of your questions.
