Overcoming Sexual Oppression

There is no question that after giving about four speeches, I have become a much better overall public speaker. In the beginning of the semester, I would tend to get nervous during some of my speeches and consequently the delivery of my speech would be greatly affected. If I had made a mistake, my level of nervousness would drastically increase and I wouldn’t know how to correct it. Although today I have improved on these aspects. Normally in order to control my nerves I try to think as positively as possible. This is critical because when I start to think even a little bit negatively then I severely hurt my chances of giving a good speech. Instead today, my main priority is to stay very confident and tell myself that I’m going to perform fine.

Have you or anyone close to you ever been discriminated before? Multiple types of gender discrimination has always been an issue and it’s time for it all to come to an end. Gender discrimination is discrimination that is based on someone’s gender or sex. Many people have faced it in different ways. I am researching the harm that is caused to different genders, the way women don’t get paid the same as men, and how LGBT people are discriminated in the workplace.

Throughout the past twelve weeks of taking Women and Gender studies, I have learned extensive amounts of information and will be able to take all of the ideas and concepts learned into action outside of the classroom. Each class, we had various conversations about what was going on in the world around us and how that affects each and every one of us. With the knowledge that I now have, I feel as if I am a much better citizen in Canada since I acquire the knowledge of the history in Canada and the conditions of women’s lives, and also how factors such as race, class, and sexual orientation come into play in daily life. Media had a significant impact on the gender. Due to how people judging LGBTTQ people, it showed people always judge by reading the cover of book only instead of putting themselves into their shoes. People online usually judge others by hearing what other people said, but not what they really see and feel. The oppression of LGBT men was and is a serious problem, especially during the AIDS crisis, but the efforts to eliminate this oppression has been mostly successful. Oppression has always been prominent throughout human history. The Ancient Jews were persecuted by the Egyptians and African Americans were slaves to plantation owners. Those are just two examples of oppression throughout history, though there have been thousands. One form of oppression was the oppression of LGBT men during the 1980’s as a result of the AIDS crisis.

There is always room to improve and through the speech classes I took throughout high school I feel like I improved in my speaking skills. One of my strengths is being good at preparation. Moreover, the definition offered suggests that sexual orientation does not solely relate as a characteristic of an individual but is most reflective of a relationship with another individual (APA, 2008). In the United States, those with a sexual orientation described as lesbian, gay, transgender or bisexual have faced discrimination, violence and prejudice based on their sexual orientation. Throughout the 1970's, 80's and into the 1990's public opinion polls indicated a significant rate of violence and harassment targeted towards those individuals identified as or self identified as belonging to the gay, lesbian, or homosexual community. With HIV/AIDs becoming more prevalent and the national and international scare associated with the disease, the gay and lesbian community was the primary target. The way one speaks to others can jeopardize the amount of respect and trust others have for them. Why are some LGBT living in an unwelcoming environment? Some people don’t welcome LGBT because, their sexuality is different from others, and people don’t like that. I feel like you shouldn’t judge anybody on what they are. People commit suicide because, people pick on them because of their sexuality, and that's not good for the community. This community we live in judge people a lot, and it has to stop. Usually people that are LGBT, most of their family members doesn’t accept them because of their sexuality. Never judge a book by it’s cover, because people are not always how you think they are, they are not how you see them , and they may be having a rough time.
