“A Pair of Tickets” is a short story in the book, The Joy Luck Club, which is compiled of several short stories told by 4 daughters and their mothers and this short story is the final chapter of the book and reflects a lot of the themes presented in the earlier part of this book. This book deals with all different types of mother daughter relationships between Chinese mothers with American daughters. This short story is told by Jing-Mei, or June, and her journey to meet her long lost sisters. Her mother has passed away and Jing-Mei is fulfilling her mother’s wishes. Her and her father travel to China, and visit family and Jing-Mei slowly discovers more about the culture she has been raised in and things begin to make sense for Jing-Mei. In the Joy Luck Club, Jing-Mei and her mother do not have the best relationship and we get a brief glimpse of this in the short story. This short story is not only about Jing-Mei’s journey to China but also a journey to find her true identity and what it truly means to “be Chinese” and not just “Look Chinese.” At the beginning of the story we …show more content…

June never wanted to embrace the Chinese culture that her mom wanted her to which created some tension between the two. Earlier in the book, The Joy Luck Club, we learned that June is born in San Francisco (Wood). Having an American born daughter with two full Chinese parents creates a barrier between the three of them. June’s mother cherishes the traditions and culture of China but June wants to live and independent American life style (Wood). June’s mother grew up in China and lived through the Japanese invasion and wanted to hold onto whatever traditions and ideals she could. June didn’t care. June’s independence was viewed as a defiant act to support her individualism in the American culture (Shear). June knew this about herself but didn’t realize what it meant for her relationship with her
