Panem: A Dystopian Society

The Hunger Games contribute to the sea of dystopian films, within this film social commentary is exposed in the gruesome scenes of murder preadolescents are forced to commit. In the dystopian film, the totalitarian nation of Panem is divided into 12 districts and the Capital. Each year two young representatives from each district are chosen to participate in The Hunger Games. The Hunger Games are televised throughout Panem and are used as part entertainment ,and as part retribution for a past rebellion. The dystopian genre makes parallels between the fabricated society and actual society. The reality TV element of the games demonstrates the link between the society of Panem and our society. From child beauty pageants to a rich family that no one knows why is famous, these shows are watched by many in today's society. People forget that these people are real and living their own lives compared to the “scripted” TV shows with paid actors. Capitol dwellers are obsessed with their image, making body modifications to look young and to stay in trend. This aspect of the novel makes a comment on plastic surgery and image in today’s society (Frade, 2014). The use of the hunger games as a social event shows that Capitol views the people in the districts as lesser individuals and are willing to watch people die for their entertainment. Collins uses a mixture of modern and classical as elements in this story and it allows for any age reader to enjoy it. Some the literary devices she uses in the book are setting, symbolism, and themes. It’s everything you could want in a book because it has a little bit of each genre, like action, romance, comedy, and even mystery. This book will have you sitting at the edge of your seat on minute and then grabbing for a tissue the next. In Panem’s case, only the rich and those in government power can really believe that Panem is an ideal society. As shown throughout the book, most citizens that live among the districts oppress the lifestyle that they have. Therefore, Panem can't possibly be a utopian society; Actually, it is more of a DYSTOPIAN society. Most people have heard of the Hunger Games, but don’t know the true meaning. People say it’s a book (or movie) about innocent people getting slaughtered. It may look like that but there is so much more depth. When authors write books, they add their perspective and beliefs. It could be about government, religion and many more controversial topics. The dystopian protagonist that is present in the Hunger Games is Katniss Everdeen. “Finally, I am too restless to even stay in bed. I pace the floor, heart beating too fast, breathing too short. My room feels like a prison cell. I run down hall to the door to the roof. The energy field enclosing the roof prevents any desperate form of escape” (Collins 148) Katniss is often struggling to escape or feels like she’s trap, she knows that she’s a tribute in the hunger games and is afraid that she will never see her family again if she doesn’t come out as the victor. Through Katniss’s perspective you can easily recognize that there is something wrong with the society that she lives in. “ I want to do something, right here, right now, to shame them, to make them accountable, to show the Capitol whatever they do or force us to do there is a part of every tribute they can’t own” (Collins 237). Katniss knows that the Capitol is cruel and wrong for having the hunger games, forcing the tributes to kill one another

With dystopia being a present theme in both George Orwell’s, 1984 and Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games, both titles share similarities and contrasts to one another. Even though these books were written decades apart, they share similarities in the government control and the presence of poverty in the settings. But, both books contradict one another as futuristic settings are viewed differently depending on when the books are written, as well as the remembrance of past struggles in the societies. The seeds of a dystopian theme are found in 1984 and The Hunger Games, presenting similarities and differences from in both books, even though the books were written decades a part.

Dystopian literature adheres to certain conventions; the theme of a dystopian future typically encompasses a severely repressed society, with socio-political dysfunction and class stratification. Themes of surveillance, censorship and personal independence have been established by authors such as George Orwell, and are recurrent throughout 2008 novel “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins, although Orwellian dystopia and conceived ideas of freedom are juxtaposed in an intriguing fashion. “The Hunger Games” revolves around the notion of the various districts of Panem offering in tribute one young man and woman, to fight to the death in a pageant of honor, courage and sacrifice, Panem being the nation that was established during an unknown period of time, and the pageant of honor being the barbaric means of controlling its citizens. Whilst more recent dystopian literature derives heavily from Orwellian conventions in some respects, it arguably differs greatly in others, redefining to an extent the genre.

In Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games, the society of the people of Panem are far from living a happy life. Everyday, the citizens of Panem are living in pure agonizing fear. Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games, envisioned a society that is completely controlled by government causing people to live every day in fear. A society that is controlled by the government, that an event like the reaping is hosted ripping people's family members away. A government so overpowering causing people to live in fear of starvation due to the limited supplies. Although the people of Panem live their life in fear not knowing certainty of their future, they make things due for as long as they can.
