Major events have crafted the United States and other nations into what they are today. Going from world wars in the 1940’s, to civil rights movements in the 1960’s, to extravagant national debt today, have all played a part in shaping our nation. Being from rural Mississippi, world news being made here is uncommon. We see all of our major news from televisions or newspapers, and this “news” is all happening elsewhere, far from here. Whether it is a good thing that we do not make the big news or not, the fear of uncertain events still lingers. Forty-five nationwide shootings occurred in the year 2015 where numerous innocent children were killed by cold, hearted adults. Enough is enough with these unforgivable tragedies happening again and again. No matter what schools say about ways already enforced, it is obviously not working because since the well-known shooting of Sandy Hook there has been 142. School is a place to teach and give knowledge to students in a happy, healthy setting. When kids are going to school they are not happy to learn when schools have tendencies to be attacked by an insider or outsider. I have been a student in the Thomas County School System ever since I started pre-school. During my time here, I have loved every minute of it, learning and having great experiences with friends and teachers here. Over the last four years of my high school experience, I have noticed that there have been more threats of bombings and shootings around the nation. Even though we do have a safe school and take precautions, there is still room for error. I am proposing that we make school a safer place for kids to learn by installing bulletproof glass as well as door-stoppers in each class.

I'm hurt and sickened by the actions of this man. As we stand by and watch the biggest mass shooting in American history unfold, there are a few things we need to remember.

“GET DOWN!.... SHHH!!!!.... GET DOWN! GET INTO A ROOM AND LOCK IT!!!!” This is the first thing our opposite crew heard as they walked into the ER with a patient last month. Should this crew have recognized the signs of an active shooter? Is walking into a hospital with an active shooter even a real concern? From 2000-2012, there were 154 hospital related shootings in the United States with 235 injuries or deaths. That’s more than 1 shooting a month. As QIC I will implement parts of the “Active Shooter Preparedness” from United States Homeland Security. Knowing exactly what Emergency Action Plans our hospitals have in place will help us know how to recognize and react to possible active shooter situations. Scene safety is constant with EMS.

Inside of a club people are dancing and socializing then the music has a strange beat and people are falling to the ground then they realize that's not music those are gunshots. Those shots were shot by Omar Mateen who was the shooter in america's largest mass shooting. Omar did many things before the shooting that lead up to it. The shooting was horrible many people died and many were injured. Omars whole life was Violence which could be the reason of why he did this.

Born on November 9th, 1970, Lisa Vanderbeck grew up in a very close knit neighborhood, always doing things with her neighbors, whether they were thirty years older than her, or ten years younger. One person who she was extremely close to was a friend of her moms, Mrs. Louis, who lived five doors down from her. Lisa, her mom, and twin sister would go over to her house at least once a week for “Avon Lady Day”. They would drink coffee, and hang out with the other neighbors who attended.

The media coverage of mass shooting on college campuses over the last decade has created a major debate over the permitting of guns on campus. Coverage of these events depicts walking on a college campus to that of walking in Fallujah. These news stories lead one to believe that it is not safe to be on a college campus. It was April 20 1999 and Columbine high school was in session 2 fellow students were outside but nobody knew and they had propane bombs in the cafeteria kitchen and then at 11:19 am they were supposed to go off but then this happened. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris were on tv and the news recorded everything.

Nine students were killed at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon. A man opened fire in a church, in Charleston, South Carolina, killing nine people, including the pastor. Twenty-seven were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut. Twelve were killed in the Washington Navy Yard. This is only a few examples from a very long list. The grim truth is that mass shootings are becoming the new normal. Every few months, another mass shooting occurs and the public goes through the same routine of mourning, honoring, and ultimately debating. Since the Columbine shooting in 1999 there has been over 200 school shootings. Many of these could have been prevented if more precautions were taken when selling weapons. Some solutions to prevent tragedies like this include background checks and increased security/ searches. Although some may argue that it is our right to bear arms and purchase weapons ultimately more steps need to be taken before selling weapons.

There is an assumption that if you understand the minds of serial killers, or persons who commit mass shootings, that it may help prevent mass shootings. “Mass shootings are not on the rise, but have held steady over three decades, randomly clustering in time to trick our brains into finding a pattern of increase where none actually exists” (Shermer 3). Mass shootings happen at varying times without rhyme or reason. Some think that a psychological disorder or some genetic defect could be the reason people commit these crimes. Although we cannot prevent mass shootings, we can educate on how mental health issues can be a precursor to such a tragedy, and how better laws can create a safer environment.

The age to own automatic weapons such as machine guns or handguns should be 21, agree? If not, let me tell you why it should be 21 years old. Recently we’ve been having 18 year olds or younger shooting up schools. Mainly killing with pistols or machine guns. Am I wrong? Kids are too immature to even touch a gun. The government should change the legal age to 21 instead of 18 for owning handguns and semi-automatic weapons/guns.
