Family Systems Therapy Alexis M. Foote Texas A & M University-Corpus Christi Family Systems Therapy There are a number of theories under the Family Systems Therapy group that focus on communication patterns within the family unit. Systems theory is based on the family’s response to feedback from one another and the desire of the group to make changes to maintain the status quo. In the family system we discover who we are, we grow and change, and we give and receive support that is necessary for survival (Corey, 2013). Rather than relying on talk therapy, therapist began to explore using visual, physical and sensory interventions to help better understand and change family systems (Papp, et al., 2013). When using the sculpting technique the therapist asks each family member to physically place the other members of the family in a three-dimensional relationship with one another to symbolize their relational positions in terms of boundaries, interaction, conflicts, distance and closeness (Papp, et al.,2013). While there are a number of techniques that a family systems counselor can use to foster growth and change in the family, it is important for the counselor to be flexible in his or her approach and use an approach that is in the best interest of the family (Corey, 2013). Multicultural Considerations A difficulty with Family Systems therapy is the lack of dealing with individual issues. The problem is addressed from the perspective of developing and resolving interpersonal issues among family members. This approach has the possibility to overlook issues that are unique to one individual. A sense of personal perspective may be lost as the therapist looks to understand the systems, and subsystems within the family constellation.
