Hi Crystal , I have the same problem with paraphrase. I will try to summarize a source material to explain a point of view. I unaccidently ended up paraphrase a paragragh out of the text book. Which cause me mess up my references and in text citations. That’s why I try to use proper essay structure, free writing and writing down points to make sure is my APA style correct (Chamber,n.d; Ridley,n.d)
Jenniba, I think your correct that accidental plagiarism is the hardest. I also, find myself reading a passage or section multiple times, this helps me understand better what the writer is trying to say. In doing so, I have to make sure the summary is my words and at the same time expressing the points of the writer without accidently copying structure. I use the method of freewriting (Bethel University, 2014) after each read of the passage, this enables me to refine my thoughts and build a complete summary of the passage. I especially try to pay attention to my word choices and structure, and always cite borrowed material.
When you include a direct quotation or paraphrase referring to a specific passage in your paper, always include the author and year, as well as the page number, as part of the citation. APA requires the author, year, and page number for direct quotations and recommends providing the same information for paraphrases.
Even cite paraphrased information. Quoted or paraphrased material should not dominate a student’s work; use it sparingly to support your own thoughts, ideas, and examples. Failure to properly cite material can jeopardize a passing grade on the exam. Your work may be submitted to turnitin.com, an online plagiarism checking service.
Since starting Unit 3, I have learned a variety of writing/citing techniques. Previous to this unit, I did not realize that it was necessary to cite a paraphrase. Now I am knowledgeable on how to document paraphrases and quotations. I now know that to correctly document a quotation, it is vital to include the three parts: an in-text citation, quotation marks, and it must be included in the works cited. I have also learned that documenting a paraphrase is similar, but requires one less step. One does not need to include quotation marks. Alongside learning how to accurately document a source, I have also been informed about what plagiarism actually is. I found out that the magic number is 3 or more of important words. I also learned
I have the problem at my job. I have department managers that follow individual approach.* Which generally means they look out for their self interest or their friends. Don’t get me wrong I understand wanting to help friends or family but not at cost of some else job or self respect. While my salary manager are pretty much utilitarian in nature. They think the greater good comes from controlling cost and making a profit.* This why nothing ever gets done.
BPII Topic sentence: Paraphrasing is another way to borrow information from a source and putting into your own words.
After reading the Unit Three material and taking the Academic Integrity Tutorial I feel the hardest and most dangerous type of plagiarism to avoid would be paraphrasing. I read a lot of different genre books and when speaking on them find that I tend to paraphrase too closely to the author's writing. My fear is that I would plagiaphrase unintentially (Bethel, 2014). This week's reading taught me a better way to paraphrase which will help reduce those opportunities. Conducting all the research, finding the main points, putting the book or source material away and deliberate how it all pertains will also be of
During this research paper, I learned how to summarize, paraphrase, and quote different information in multiple articles. Summarizing and paraphrasing are different, but they are usually grouped together. Paraphrasing requires the information to be cited while summarizing gives an overview of the entire article. Quoting from an article can be very difficult. Citations are required in an essay in order to avoid copy. I learned that the important to choosing quotes from an article is to choose the sentences that put the most importance argument that you are trying to prove to the audience. I learned that with every quote, the author’s name must be added in parentheses before the period. Through this semester, I use all three elements: summarizing, paraphrasing, and quotations. My body paragraphs have become more confident and
However, this needs to be attributed to the original source for it to be accepted as a proper writing technique. Paraphrasing usually is a shorter version of the original sentence structure, by somewhat broadening the segment slightly; while condensing its key points and ideas together. One way to do this is by changing certain words, and replacing them with antonym’s or synonym; meaning to change the meaning of the word entirely. Or, another words putting you own ideas and suggestion into the segments to where you gain a positive response from your audience. It like putting a final polish on someone else’s work, by giving them credit as well as credit to yourself. But always remember, if you should happen to use any portion of the sentence, then you need to put quotation and cite the original
Repressing the facial tic that threatened to rise up and consume him at hearing her cavalierly addressing him, insulting him. Not only did this costumed ‘Crystal’ represent everything that was wrong with the City, in his mind, but also she represented the unruliness and degeneracy of modern youth. It raised Mr. Dalmere’s hackles, put his entire state of mind at risk of being perturbed, and once perturbed it was more difficult for him than most people to restore his balance. ”You see, Crystal,” his gritty voice rang out over the public parking lot, ”there are two driving forces in this City, my City. Order and chaos. You think you are fighting for order, for the people, for truth and justice, but you most assuredly are not. The people are chaos.
(student.unsw, 2015) “A paraphrase may result in a longer, rather than shorter, version of the original text. It offers an alternative to using direct quotations and helps students to integrate evidence/ source material into assignments”. Paraphrasing is also a useful skill to have when taking notes in classes, for readings and for information found in tables.
Ever since I was in high school, school introduced me on quoting sources but I never realized how wrong I was putting them together. For instance, integrating the quotations into my own text has always been the hardest part for myself for the reason that I wouldn't combined the quotations successfully in the right places, same thing happens when introducing quotations, at least for me. Although, after reading chapters 1-3, I learned and I got so many ideas on how to write just about anything, and we are not even half way through with the book. When I was writing my diagnostic essay I would overthink too much on how to put the author's words and mine together. From this perspective, I started a sentence with a quotation, but I was mistaken because
APA format appears to be one of the simpler ways of citing references in my personal opinion. Plagiarism is a very scary word to me. For this reason, I plan to keep a copy of the APA Quick Guide within a hands reach at all time when working on an assignment. I feel it will be to my benefit to read over the APA Quick Guide each week in order to keep it fresh in my mind and I plan to do exactly that. I have also downloaded a copy of the APA template to assist in formatting. I am going to use in-text citations for references as well as full references at the end of my essays. If I cannot find my reference source or if I am unsure of how to reference my source I will request assistance from either an instructor, librarian or other source of knowledge available to me.
I understand exactly where you are coming from when you mentioned it's hard to paraphrase. I am not good in summarizing without using the others original text. However, one thing I suggest if you wish to paraphrase is to shorten the text. You should take out the key ideas and paraphrase those into your own words. This method works better for me along with using Purdue owl. If you need more information on paraphrasing visit
