What does it mean to be an “American”? Often times the term American is misinterpreted. An American is someone who Is patriotic, commits himself or herself to liberty and equality, and is a citizen of the United States. Patriotism is the love of a country and one's willingness to sacrifice for it. In the passage Never Forgotten Their Duty it states “Every afternoon, before we had a bowl of soup, we would hang Mike’s shirt on the wall of our cell and say the Pledge of Allegiance.” This is an example of patriotism because even though they could get punished for doing so, they stayed dedicated to their country. Patriots show love for their nation by enlisting in the army. When going to the army you are showing dedication, commitment and love for your nation, because you are willing to sacrifice your life to protect it. A patriot stands up and defend what he or she believes in. Patriotism to me means love, dedication, and passion for America, which brings me to my next topic of liberty and equality. …show more content…

America itself is said to be the land of the free and home of the brave. People come to America from all over the world for security, equality, liberty, and in hopes of pursuing their dreams. In, “The New Colossus,” Emma Lazarus says, ”Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!..Give me your tired [and] your poor.” In this quote Lazarus believes that the Statue of Liberty signifies the welcoming opportunities and a new start.
