Literary Analysis
Paul Fisher was just another normal five year old boy until his brother Erik, did something that would change his life forever. In the book Tangerine written by Edward Bloor there is a boy named Paul Fisher and he has a brother named Erik. He and his brother weren't the closest of friends, and Erik made some pretty bad decisions. Erik Fishers choices affected Paul by making him legally blind, hating his family for not giving him the truth, and by thinking what had happened to him was his fault. Erik has made some pretty bad choices throughout his life but this one he mad was particularly the worst… Erik spray painted his five year old brothers eyes, making him officially legally blind. Erik and his friend, Caster, were
The main point of this story, Tangerine, by Edward Bloor, is how the people who are looked down upon see from different points of view. An example of this is the main character, Paul, who is considered blind by many and is often looked down upon in society, however, he often sees what others do not and has excessive knowledge of the world around him. Even though he sees everything, he does not say what he knows and others do not ask him, for they believe he has no knowledge of the problems. After moving to Tangerine, he sees his brother doing horrible things and his parents none the wiser. His friend suffers at the hands of his brother and is eventually killed, and afterwards, Paul feels much guilt for the words unsaid. Since Paul is often looked down upon, he notices facts and clues society does not, however he fears saying something, in which causes his friend to be murdered.
Erik Fisher is not a very caring person, to say the least. He does not have a lot of respect for his little brother. Erik is a very large square with bright colors on the outside on the outside but dark on the inside. Everybody thinks Erik is the best, especially his father, and he’s always the center of attention. While responding to the new football coach in Tangerine to a question about whether Erik could give about 5 points, his father responded: “Oh, Erik can give you that...he scored fourteen points in one game. That was the game when he kicked the forty-seven yard field goal.”(29). As seen by this quote, he is clearly the main focus of his father.
In the novel Tangerine By Edward Bloor, we read about Paul a twelve-year-old boy who struggles with legal blindness, and he also feels neglected by his parents. Paul realizes that his older brother Erik is a cruel and a twisted child. Paul tries to get his parents to see his point of view, but has trouble getting the message to them. Paul and his brother Erik, though related have many differences, but also a few similarities that make them unique characters of interest in the novel.
“The growth and development of people is the highest calling of leadership”- Harvey S. Firestone. In the book Tangerine, seventh-grader Paul Fisher just recently moved to Tangerine County, Florida because of his dad’s new engineering job. He lives with his two parents and his antagonizing brother, Erik Fisher, who is constantly bullying him. As time flies by, Paul transforms into a new character. Paul Fisher’s choices he made during his development truly shaped who he is now because he finally got the courage to tell the truth about Erik and Arthur, assaulted a staff member, and chose to go to Tangerine Middle School.
In the novel Tangerine by Edward Bloor Erik Fisher, Paul Fisher’s older brother, causes Paul to be bullied, less afraid of him, and more mature. Throughout the book Erik Fisher makes many decisions that cause Paul to be stronger and more mature. Erik does this by causing Paul to be bullied, causing Luis Cruz’s death, and betraying Paul’s trust.
Having an evil character in a story makes the story much more interesting. The evil character in Tangerine is Erik, a high school boy, brother and son who is focused only on himself. When we think of evil people, we think about Hitler, Osama, and Hiroshi. With his deceit, disregard for others, and self-centered attitude, Erik could be on that list. In this story, Paul, Erik’s younger brother, is the hero because he thinks about others and does the right thing in difficult situations. Although Erik is cruel, dishonest, and dishonorable, he makes a book’s best villain.
Unwanted How does it feel to be unwanted, even by your own dad? In the novel, Tangerine, by Edward Bloor, Paul Fisher is constantly feeling neglected by his father. As the book goes on, examples are clearly shown of how Mr. Fisher respects his older son, Erik, much more than he does Paul. Paul’s Dad’s choices made Paul feel unwanted and pushed him away from his family, friends, and soccer.
Everyone has been misunderstood at one time or another. It’s part of the human life. Difference. Difference is what brings us together. Paul Fisher is different. In the novel Tangerine by Edward Bloor, the protagonist, Paul Fisher, is legally blind. Misunderstood his whole life. While he legally cannot see, he can see what others can’t. Or won’t. This has plagued Paul’s life and throws a shadow over his memory. His memory is holding Paul back. He has been told his whole life that he became blind from staring at a solar eclipse for an hour. But he can’t remember it. Paul and his family are now moving to Florida to start a new life. Paul’s zombies are following, waiting to come out of the shadows and finally reveal what they’ve been hiding from Paul. As Paul struggles with the secrets in his family and changing schools, he feels intimidated and misunderstood, but he soon learns that he’s been a coward all his life, but there’s nothing to be afraid of, and he begins to stand up for himself and
In Literature, symbolism is a powerful force. It can lead a story along & will usually be a vital part to said story. It can build tension, advance characters, and create plot. This is seen clearly on page 130, where the author states, “His front was still clean and white, but his back is now filthy.”. This excerpt from the football game where Antoine Thomas essentially pranks Erik is very, very rich in symbolism. It’s really a an amazing summary of Erik’s character in less than 2 sentences. Clean on the front, dirty of the back. We see this all throughout the book, with Erik acting all nice with his smiles and student body stuff, but in reality, we all know the truth. We know Erik is rotten to the core, especially after he spray-painted Paul’s
When the brothers were young Erik makes the choice to spray paint in Paul eyes causing him to go blind. Erik believed that Paul told on his best friend Castor even after Paul confirmed he didn’t do it. Erik and Castor grab paul and spray paint into his eyes.
For starters, Eric’s horrendous choices made Paul's life miserable and difficult. Erik Fisher chose to spray paint Paul’s eyes just because he assumed Paul ratted out his friend, Vincent Castor, for spray painting the wall back in Houston, Texas. “And I remembered Eriks fingers prying my eyelids open
Erik’s Choices In the Edward Bloor’s novel Tangerine, Erik’s choice to bully Paul throughout the the story makes Paul believe that Erik is just another kid in his horrible life. In the beginning of Paul’s life, Erik decides to spray paint Paul’s eyes so that he goes nearly blind: “I turned around and saw Vincent Castor. He was holding a can of spray paint […] and I remember Erik’s fingers holding my eyelids open while Vincent Castor sprayed white paint into them” (Bloor 263-264). That was Paul’s first horrible encounter with his brother Erik that will physically affect hurt him for the rest of Paul’s life.
The book Tangerine, by Edward Bloor, is a realistic fiction story. Picking up the book, I inferred that the story would be gloomy. On the cover, you can see what I presume is Paul Fisher. In the background, I observed a red sky, and fire burning on the ground. As the back of the book reads, “In Tangerine, it seems, anything is possible”.
Paul Fisher was a boy who really shaped his life. Now Paul really learned from his mistakes and thats what made him change his life. Paul Fisher was a boy who had a Mom Mrs. Fisher, a Dad Mr. Fisher, and his older Brother Erik. Paul started his life by making really bad and poor decisions, but now his life has changed because he is making good life choices.
The movie Antwone Fisher (2002) illustrates the main character as a 24-year-old African American male from Cleveland, Ohio. Mr. Fisher is physically in good condition yet he seems mentally and emotionally troubled. He is often distant amongst his peers, quick-tempered, violent and defensive. He is a six-year Navy officer who has been involved in several fights with his shipmates. Due to frequent violent conflicts, Antwone was demoted to seaman and required to attend three counseling sessions with the U.S. Navy psychiatrist, Dr. Jerome Davenport. During the first session, Antwone mentioned that he was “from under a rock” and that he had no family (Antwone Fisher, 2002). It was revealed that Mr. Fisher’s experienced a distressing childhood
