Experimental Group: Five thousand Peacock Butterflies with intact eyespot display and sound producing ability. Control Group: Five thousand Peacock Butterflies with removed eyespot display and sound producing ability. Experiment: The butterflies will be left from each group separately behind identical predators (i.e. yellowhammers and great tits on both groups). Afterward, the number of butterflies left in each group will be counted, which determines how efficient the butterflies of each group are in defending
Science Fiction is a genre that can be difficult to define. Many stories may conform to the idea of ‘what if’. As a functional genre it presents the reader with alternative possibilities using current issues in society. A Cage of Butterflies by Brian Caswell is about a group of highly intelligent children known as the ‘Think Tank’, who are put into an institute (the farm), because of their physical deformities. They encounter the presence of a group of young paranormal children (the babies) with whom they can communicate with telepathically. The Think Tank strives to rescue the Babies and encounter many hidden secrets within the farm and the evil plans of Larsen (head scientist) for fame and fortune. Caswell explores the ides of human
The monarch butterfly, as known as Danaus plexippus, is often called the milkweed butterfly because its larvae eat the milkweed plant. They are also sometimes called "royalty butterflies" because their family name comes from the daughter of Danaus, ruler of Argos. There are many other interesting facts about this butterfly including its anatomy and life cycle, where the butterfly lies on the food chain, the migration from Canada to Mexico, why the butterfly is being threatened, and lastly, what is being done to help the butterfly.
Keeping the experiment isolated on the focus of body size is as simple as not changing any other variables concerning the experiment. Therefore, predator number, predator size, habitat type, and any other possible variable in the experiment that is not body size will be kept as consistent and identical throughout the groups and replicable tests as
Julia Alvarez’s novel In the Time of the Butterflies shows the lack of fairness in society and the importance of maintaining a strong family bond. Trujillo was not fair between men and women and granting men the rights to do whatever they want. The Mirabal sisters’ revolutionary against president Trujillo and fighting for freedom of the country and its people. In Saudi Arabia women are now granted to drive, but there some other things that men can do but women cannot. The Mirabal family has a strong maintain of a family bond. Minerva is one of the four sisters who is brave and had the courage to stand for others and started the revolution against the president.
Throughout history women have always been minimized from social, sexual , and political aspects juxtaposed to men. Just like in the novel In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez, the author uses the Mirabal sisters to demonstrate the inequalities set in the Dominican Republic. The dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo causes the Mirabal sisters to come together and overthrow Trujillo’s regime.Trujillo. Rafael Trujillo was despised by many yet many were forced to worship him like some type of paragon. As the novel progresses, illustrations of male dominance often appear throughout each chapter. The Mirabal sisters: Minerva, Patria, Maria Teresa and Dede each demonstrate the ability to overcome stigmas in order to obtain freedom.

“If you don’t study your history, you are going to repeat it” (312). Dedé states this in In the Time of the Butterflies after being questioned why she shares her story. The historical fiction novel by Julia Alvarez, takes place in the 1940’s, under the dictatorship of Trujillo, and in 1994 when Dedé recites her family’s historic and engrossing life. The Mirabal sisters up rise against the government, hoping to gain freedom for the Dominican Republic. Alvarez’s In the Time of the Butterflies exemplifies the attributes Vladimir Nabakov would consider necessary for great literature as specified in his essay, “Good Readers and Good Writers.” Alvarez’s masterpiece focuses on a rebellious young woman who challenges the dictatorial Trujillo
An association between enzyme production, gene copy number, and gene evolution was explored by conducting analysis of the salivary amylase enzyme, AMY1A gene copy number, and the ancestral starch consumption in Homo Sapiens (Tracey 2017, p.22). It was hypothesized that the relative amount of starch consumption was very high for my personal ancestral diet, thus my AMY1 diploid gene copy number in my genome and salivary amylase concentration would be significantly higher than the population mean. With a population of 28 subjects (n=28), individual saliva samples were collected and compared to a calibration curve to determine the approximate amylase concentration by analyzing absorbance values. Individual samples of buccal cheek cells were
In the book “ In the Time of the Butterflies,” the author describes the lives of four revolutionary sisters in the Dominican Republic. These sisters were Dede, Patria, Maria Teresa, and Minerva Mirabal. Minerva was the one who stood out the most to me. The passion she had and showed made her sound like a sacrificial leader. Minerva was the type to stand up for what she believed in. Rafael Trujillo was the leader of the Dominican Republic, whatever he say or want to be changed it changes. He was a brutal dictator. Minerva showed him that she is brave and strong. In the book she stated “ I was the one always standing up to him”. When she needed his help she buttered him up into making a deal with her. The Mirabal sisters will always be a
The “predators” in this experiment were three different types of tools, a tweezer, a wooden clothespin, and a clothes clip. At the start of the first round, there were ten beans for each different type of bean. Nearly all the white beans were taken out of the first round, only one survived. This was because the white beans were large, non slippery, and easy to catch. Red beans and green beans were not as easy to catch. Based on the data and the graph, the tweezers captured the most beans in this round and the clothes clip had the least (w/ only one white bean).
“In the Time of the Butterflies” takes place in the Dominican Republic in the 1960s. The author, Julia Alvarez is a native of the country, but moved to the US at a young age. She first heard about the sisters roughly around 1986 and instantly felt the need to share their story with the world. In the book, Alvarez tells the story of the Mirabal sisters and their fight for freedom against the Dominican dictator Trujillo. Rafael Trujillo reigned for about 30 years until his assassination in May of 1961. Trujillo’s reign of terror began in 1930 and the violence soon followed. The self centered dictator changed the names of cities and murdered roughly about 20,000 Haitians from the neighboring country. The book not only tells the sisters’
Based on the decline of the Karner blue across its historic range, it was listed as endangered in 1992. Since listing, two populations have been extirpated and are being reintroduced to Concord, New Hampshire, and West Gary, Indiana. A third population is being reintroduced to Ohio. The threat of the Karner blue butterfly extinction exists primarily from the loss of critical habitat caused by landscape fragmentation, natural succession and concomitant suppression of the natural disturbance regime (Smallidge 1996; Clough 1992).
In conclusion, the data that was collected helped tell us that the solutions greatly affected the cell of the egg because it caused the egg’s mass to increase than decrease. Also saw how the solutions played a role in the phospholipid bilayer and saw how it altered the shape of the egg. However, it does not support my hypothesis on the affect the egg would undergo onced placed in sugar and water but sugar was not used in this experiment, but water was used and it didn’t affect the shape of the egg, all it did was cause the egg to be in a isotonic state. According to Khan Academy (2017), states that a cell is isotonic “When the extracellular fluid has the same osmolarity as the cell, there will be no net movement in or out of the cell”. Which
In this paper, I’ll mainly focus on movie Swallowtail Butterfly (1996) and discuss it from three perspectives: its artistic filming style and techniques, passive kokusaika and it influenced by exotic culture. Despite some similarities with other movies, Swallowtail Butterfly is trying to set itself apart from convention by highlighting its unique artistic value and presenting unconventional perspective of a trendy topic.
Biodiversity presents occurrence of variety of species and their natural community in which they live. By the definition it is “The degree of variation of life forms within a given species, ecosystem, biome, or an entire planet. It is a measure of the health of ecosystems and is in part a function of climate.” (Rutherford) Ecosystem is on the other hand, “ community and its abiotic environment”( Rutherford). Biodiversity exists in every ecosystem, weather it is big one, or just ecosystem of one garden, it has the same importance because without it nature loses its ability to perform major functions needed for life on Earth, as it is oxygen production. Trough this investigation, two different ecosystems will be explored and
