The next year, Pedro started the season in Bakersfield. He earned enough to live on his own for the first time. At the end of May, through ten starts, Pedro had a record of eight wins with no losses, and an ERA (Earned Run Average: the average number of runs allowed by a pitcher per nine innings) of 2.05. With his impressive start to the season, the Dodgers promoted Pedro to the AA San Antonio Missions team. During his stint with the Missions, Pedro continued to improve his pitching location. This allowed him to pitch further into games and as a result, four out of his twelve starts were complete games, and his ERA improved to 1.76. The Dodgers then called him up to the AAA Albuquerque Dukes, in New Mexico to finish out the season. …show more content…
The Red Sox won the American League Division Series (ALDS), or the first round of the playoffs, but lost in the American League Championship Series (ALCS), a round away from the World Series. At the end of the 2000 season, Pedro played a part in the Red Sox signing fellow Dominican-born Manny Ramirez from the Cleveland Indians, increasing the team’s likelihood of making a playoff run. Around Christmas in 2002, Pedro recommended again that Boston sign a Dominican, this time David Ortiz, “a very good player who got screwed by the [Minnesota] Twins”. The Red Sox got in touch with David, and signed him, completing the missing puzzle piece to a World Series winning team. During the 2003 season, the Red Sox made it to the ALCS but once again lost to the New York Yankees, falling one round short of the championship round. The 2004 season found the Red Sox acquiring a new manager, Terry Francona. That year, they made the playoffs and easily made it past the first team in the ALDS. In the ALCS, the Red Sox yet again played the Yankees. Despite Pedro pitching a losing game in the series, the Red Sox came back from having three losses in the first three games to win the final four games and proceeded to the World Series. The Red Sox easily won the World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals, sweeping them in four wins, proving that their biggest competition was their division rival Yankees. Pedro pitched in the
The Sox had immediate success with players like Cy Young, Jimmy Collins, Tris Speaker, Smokey Joe Wood, and Babe Ruth throughout its early years. Boston won the first World Series in 1903 followed by championships in 1912, 1915, 1916, and 1918. One of the most well known baseball players in history, pitcher-turned-outfielder Babe Ruth was originally from the Red
The “New York Yankees” is the baseball team that has won 18 division titles, 40 AL pennants, and 27 World Series championships, all of which are Major League Baseball records. It makes great records and great success each year. And the impact it has on the global economy is huge. Major League Baseball is an oligopoly dominated by a few firms.
Led by Musial's hot bat, the loose, inexperienced Cardinals surprised everyone by winning 106 games, including 43 of their last 52, to claim the National League pennant. Then St. Louis beat the favored Yankees in the World Series, and Musial was on a world championship team in his first full season.
In 1978, the Red Sox held a 14-game lead in the American League East over the Yankees on July 18. However, the Yankees subsequently caught fire, eventually winning the division by three games. In the 1986 World Series, Boston took a 5–3 lead in the top of the 10th inning. Red Sox reliever Calvin Schiraldi retired the first two batters, putting the team within one out of winning the World Series. However, the New York Mets scored three runs and winning it when Boston first baseman Bill Buckner allowed a ground ball to roll through his legs. In 2003, the Red Sox were playing the Yankees in Game 7 of the American League Championship Series. Boston held a 5–2 lead in the eighth inning, and Boston opted to stay with starting pitcher Pedro Martínez rather than go to the bullpen. New York rallied against the tired Martínez, scoring three runs on a single and three doubles to tie the game. Then in bottom of the 11th inning, Aaron Boone launched a solo home run to win the game and the pennant for the Yankees. Similar to Boston, Chicago had The Curse of the Billy Goat. The curse was supposedly placed on the Chicago Cubs Major League Baseball franchise in 1945 by Billy Goat Tavern owner William Sianis that lasted from 1945-2016. Between that 1908 triumph, which was the Cubs ' second world championship (they 'd also won the Series in 1907) Before the “curse” Chicago had won national League Pennants in 1910,
"Lefty" Williams, the starting pitcher in Game 2, was not going to be as obvious as Cicotte. After a shaky start, he pitched well until the fourth inning, when he walked three and gave up as many runs. Rookie pitcher Dickie Kerr, the Game 3 starter for the Sox, was not in on the fix. The original plan was for the conspirators, who disliked Kerr, to lose this game; but by now dissent among the players meant that the plan was in disarray.

When thinking of New York City, more often than not, the first things one visualizes is the beautiful skyline, the bright lights, and Times Square. But without a second glance, one might miss one of the important things about the city. New York is the most heavily Dominican populated city in the United States. It’s ironic that the first non-native American to migrate to and reside on what is today New York City, was from Santo Domingo, the capital city of the Dominican Republic. Throughout history, Dominicans have migrated to the US in search of economic opportunity. This is the factor that influences nearly every immigrant group that migrates to the US in history. In the early 1900s, The United States and the Dominican Republic had a very close diplomatic relationship, to the point where the President considered annexation. At one point, the United States completely controlled the Sugar industry, one of the country’s most profitable markets.
It is hard to be homesick when the Indians gave the players good places to stay big dinning halls. Roger’s contract said that he would start in Class C ball. The Fargo-Moorhead Twins., which is perfect for him because it was close to home. But a front office person said that he should start in Class D ball which means he would stay in Daytona. Roger argued and was stubborn because he wanted to play in front of his family and friends. Being so stubborn Roger said “ I am going to go home to play or go home to stay.” Most times players would be bluffing but the Indians knew how stubborn he was being that this was no lie. So Maris won and got to go home to play. After one year of playing ball with the Fargo Twins and with his older brother now ay North Dakota State University and Polio free, Roger decided to leave. Leaving with him was Pat his wife. The Indians wanted him to play Class C ball again but Maris dug in his heels and said “ Promote me to Class B or I am leaving.” and yet again Roger won and he got promoted. The manager of Class B ball loved Roger, he loved the way he played. Roger had a great season with a crazy .315 average, 32 home runs,111 RBIs and 25 stolen
The Cincinnati Red Stockings, founded in 1869, were the first professional baseball team. In 2016, they are known as the Cincinnati Reds. Through the way, they have done many things. In 1919, they won the World Series. This World Series was controversial due to the fact that some of the players the White Sox, the other team, bet on losing it. During the 1938 season, Johnny Vander Meer threw back to back no hitters, the only time in baseball history. In 1940 the Reds win the World Series again, but this time it was not controversial. It would be another 35 years until they win the World Series again, but comes much better. The 1970’s Reds teams were great, and were known as the Big Red Machine. The peak was when they won back to
What Is HIV?"). Pedro Zamora had AIDS and was very young when he first realized he was infected, which is clearly stated and depicted in this graphic novel. It shows Pedro and his fight with the disease and how he overcomes it. He became ill at a very young age. He first found out he had AIDS when he was 17. “Zamora was an HIV-positive, Cuban American gay man who died of AIDS the day after the 'San Francisco' season finale aired” (Times). Pedro started displaying different symptoms of having AIDS and he was more susceptible to diseases and other infections. Pedro and Me accurately shows the different symptoms Pedro suffered through because of the disease. Pedro did not know he was infected with AIDS until he went for a routine check-up at the doctors. Years later he began having night sweats, lost weight and had persistent diarrhea. Often there are, “many infected with HIV [who] have no symptoms for many years. In later stages, they lose weight and develop night sweats, fever, and diarrhea” (Baggaley 376).
