There is a staggering amount of corruption in the prison system that is caused by pressure on the inmates as well as the employees in Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption by Stephen King. The aforementioned corruption contributes greatly to many of the main plot points in the story such as; the harassment of the prisoners, the smuggling of contraband items into Shawshank, and the prisoners making their own lives easier by using the corruption for their own purposes.
In the novella “Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption” by Stephen King, banker Andy Dufresne is wrongfully convicted of murder and sent to Shawshank Prison. Andy’s shrewd nature and sense of self-worth become valuable tools that allow him to thrive in prison under the harsh authority of the warden, Samuel Norton. King uses Norton to demonstrate that corruption is present throughout society and that the perception of good and evil can be altered depending on who presents a story.
Prisoners like Brooks were trained to like routine for so long, that they became used to the way they were treated. Andy became subject to extortion when the administrator used him to do their tax returns ; “By April of 1951, Andy was doing the tax returns for half the screws at Shawshank , and by 1952, he was doing almost all of them” (51) This quotation shows that lack of empathy , and morals used by the administration at Shawshank. Shawshank as a prison was highly corrupt and the prisoners suffered from mental abuse by use of extortion and punishment.
Close Comparative Analysis Of Stephen King’s Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption and Frank Darabont’s The Shawshank Redemption
In the novella, Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, the reader follows the life of Andy Dufresne, who was wrongly convicted of murdering his wife and a golf pro. Author Stephen King, who is known for his simpler, conversation esque writing, describes Andy’s experiences and attempt to escape from Shawshank Prison where he is being held. Red, Andy’s most valuable friend while in prison, is also in prison for killing his wife, but in contrast to Andy, he actually did it. Andy is constantly denied his freedom for parole or when evidence arises proving his innocence because of his role running the illegal money laundering scheme for Warden Norton. Throughout the novella, both characters display moments of similar, but also at times vastly different, levels of hope. King uses the way characters, such as Red and Andy, view hope as either a means of escape or simply futile in the novella to show how the circumstances surrounding a tragedy or difficult situation change a character’s mindset on hope and in turn dictates the actions they use to cope.
In Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption by Stephen King and its movie adaptation , The Shawshank Redemption, Andy Dufresne and Red face many challenges within themselves. These two men have been incarcerated for almost half of their lives. They’ve become so adjusted to prison life that they question whether or not they would know how to survive without. Andy’s escape showed readers and watchers that his crave and hope for freedom is much stronger than Red’s. There are many similarities as well as differences between the book and film. Both the book and film are based upon hope and freedom.
Clearly, perseverance is the drive that contributes to success. Annie Sullivan had to demonstrate perseverance to teach a hotheaded girl who could not understand much. She seemed like a complete terror, and one example of this is found in Act II, Scene 3. This is a tantrum as found multiple times throughout the text. This passage states, “HELEN, grabbing, finds [a plate] missing and commences to bang with her fists on the table…
“Remember that hope is a good thing, Red, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies” (106 King). Andy and Red deeply put their conviction in the feeling of hope to give their lives meaning while in and out of Shawshank Prison. In the novella, Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption, the ending emphasizes that hope is driven by the journey for the characters, whereas the film, The Shawshank Redemption, shows that hope is driven by reaching the destination. This communicates opposite meanings to the viewer and therefore influences the message being received.

One of the most intimidating aspects of the prison life the day one is set free. Prisoners face many difficulties when attempting to accommodate back into society; for example, they spend several years in a cage imprisoned and then are released into society. There is psychological, education, and social skills they could have lost or might never had the opportunity to learn. The troubles they must face after being given a second chance. fter having served 19 years at Shawshank Prison, Andy escapes by digging a tunnel through his cell wall which was made of cheap concrete, in hopes to find his rejuvenation. Right before escaping, he talks personally with Red and admits to the fact that Andy did kill his wife. Despite the fact that he hadn’t physically killed her, he was the cause of her death because he drove her away, alongside him becoming the reason she found love somewhere else. Andy had been a bad husband and he only realized that before his escape. Andy shows a feeling of remorse towards his wife the more time he spends in prison.
Don't drop the soap is a usually advice people give you if you end up going to prison but prison can do a lot more to a person than just that. In prison the rules are different and is a dangerously place if you don't know what your doing. Even though prison is a dangerous place once you survive one you could probably survive them all since they are pretty similar. Corruption and crime is a main part behind the prison bars and is what will also change a person.
Courage can be found and proved in any setting, even a prison. Stephen King's novella Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption is about a man named Andy Dufresne who is arrested, tried, and convicted for the double homicide of his wife and her lover despite the fact that he is innocent. Throughout the story Andy is subjected to abuse after abuse. First he is wrongfully imprisoned. Then he is used by the prison guards and the warden for his financial and business acumen. He is sexually abused by Bogs Diamond and the "Sisters." Andy is put in solitary confinement for a period of months which is enough to break any man. Finally, despite the fact that there is proof of his innocence, he is kept in prison because of his usefulness and his knowledge. Despite everything that he goes through in the story, Andy endures and is able to break free from Shawshank Prison and lead a happy existence with his friend Red in Mexico. His character teaches Red through example how to be strong, to be brave, and how to be a trusting and devoted friend.
