As most look out to the city, they focus on the skyline and the way the sun shines bright over the buildings and the rays highlight every edge and curve of them they stand tall, close to perfection. As a child, I felt the same. In fact, I use to spend much of my time constructing my own towers, out of Legos, and the higher they went, the more proud I felt. However, over time I have learned to appreciate the roads and pathways leading to those massive structures just as much. In fact, the moment I anticipate most on those day trips to the city is as I am pulling onto the bridge that connects New Jersey to Manhattan. I love Jersey, it offers a comfort and security that is my past, my home. But there is something so exciting about traveling
A few weeks ago I went to Florida with my grandparents, they are the best. I was so excited and the drive to the airport took forever. The plane ride took a really long time, and when we finally got to Florida it was late. When I woke up the next morning I went to the beach and the sand was super-hot on my feet, but once I went in the water I cooled off. The sun was always shining and it was really hot. I forgot to put sunscreen on one day and I turned bright red. There were a lot of palm trees in my surroundings. The condo that we stayed was a very popular place because a lot of people stayed there. There was so much stuff to do and see that we couldn’t do everything that we wanted to. We went and packed oranges from the trees, ive never seen
The purpose of speech is to introduce New Yorkers to the new addition the city has to offer and to share with the people how it all came to be. In his dissertation, Hewitt analyzes the success New York will soon encounter by way of the bridge and states, “That Brooklyn will gain in numbers and in wealth with accelerated speed is a foregone conclusion”. Significantly, “New York City grew from 1 million people to 3 million plus” and “jobs in cities grew and locomotives to get around advanced during this time period of events.
Everyone has a favorite memory about their lives. My favorite memory took place when I traveled to Ohio in 2014 for Thanksgiving.
From childhood to now, going to Florida has played an important part in my relationships, culture, and personality. I think that the trips to Florida started when my little brother was born. Having to take care of two toddlers and an infant and work full time was hard on my parents so, my aunt offered to take me and my sister home with her for a while. Being in Florida was slightly unnerving because my sister and I were alone. We sneaked into each other's beds, comforted one another, and told lame jokes to get rid of homesickness. Eventually, when my little brother was old enough and he joined in on the fun. The three of us had the best times in Florida. We ate foods like Haitian pate, diri ak djon djon, pikliz, fried plantains and other Haitian
Pack your bags and take a trip to Cleveland, Ohio. This often overlooked city is brimming with sophistication, energy, and charm. Quirky neighborhoods, parks, sporting events, museums, theaters, and award-winning food are all a part of Cleveland's allure.
Chapter four of New Jersey: A History of the Garden State by Maxine N. Laurie and Richard Veit discusses and evaluates the early Republic in New Jersey as well as, the political advances and developmental adjustments. I broke this chapter down into the subcategories and critically read the subcategories I found most interesting which were the Women’s Suffrage Movement, African Americans and Gradual Emancipation, and the Conclusion. The conclusion was very short, but it encompassed the entire reading well and really helped me reinforce what I had just read. I was surprised to discover that New Jersey had some progressive tendencies, for example, allowing women to vote in state elections for approximately 30 years. The law was carefully crafted making it difficult for women to vote, however, single and widowed women that owned their own property were temporarily granted the right to vote. The right was eventually revoked, but it was pretty neat to think that my home state allowed women’s suffrage several years before the women’s suffrage movement proved successful granting women the right to vote under the new, 19th amendment.
Traveling between the Bronx and Manhattan has allowed me to see that even though they are so close in distance, everyone is yet so far. Being raised in the Bronx has allowed me to gain a sense of home and recognition, but also how stereotypes are meant to deceive us. The Bronx is labeled as a dangerous place, where violence occurs, but people neglect the beauty and happiness that surrounds it too. Meanwhile, when people think of Manhattan, they see it as the heart of New York where everyone is living their dreams. When in reality, the “heart” of New York is much more distant from itself, and that is not just because it is on an island.
When i went Destin, Florida. I went to Florida this summer after school was out . We went with my sisters best friend, and my best friend’s family. We drove from Arkansas all the way to Destin, Florida. The day we got there we went straight to the beach! It was the first time I had ever seen the ocean! The following day we decided to go down to the smoothie shack and get a smoothie then swim in the pool. The grown ups went to the beach while we were at the pool.
The cultural events in a person's life shape them into the person they are today. Throughout a person's life they experience events that change them culturally. These events can be either positive or negative. I went through a cultural experience when I went from Maine to Maryland.
I am on the ship to the Connecticut Colony, Wethersfield. After days at sea and being seasick, I was eager to see land. I hear someone whisper behind me “There is Connecticut Colony.” I looked around and to my surprise; it was Nathaniel Eaton, a small boy who had barely spoken to me. I didn’t think he noticed me, but obviously I was wrong. Nathaniel is the captain’s son. His mother calls him Nat. Our first stop was Saybrook. I watched as people got off the ship and decided to do a bit of wandering. I stayed close to hear the call for boarding. After a short break we set out again for Wethersfield, my final destination. I felt restless, but excited to meet my Aunt Rachel for the first time. Our letters kept us connected, but seeing her face to face and meeting my family made me happy.
This summer I went to Maryland for the first time and met my family that is over there.
Growing up in a county where kids have everything handed to them and then moving to college, where people actually have to work for what they have, has been an immense change. The lifestyle and culture in New Jersey are very different than the lifestyles and culture found in Michigan as a whole. After coming to Holland, MI, I have found a few similarities between Hunterdon County, NJ, and Holland, MI. In general, Holland is a less extreme version of Hunterdon County. For NJ, everything's a competition, a game. Having to grow up in New Jersey has been both a blessing and a curse in my life. I have learned how to be strong and confident, yet, I have also seen what wealth and materials can turn someone into. My
Imagine laying on a private beach right now in California. You’re sitting in a comfortable lawn chair with a front-row seat to the Pacific Ocean. You have waiters bringing you any kind of drink or food you want, and the sun is making you golden tan. Now, imagine the thrill you get while being on a roller coaster. The sun is beating down on you while you’re standing in line, but the wait for the exhilarating roller coaster is worth it. I got to experience all of this and more on my trip to Los Angeles, California. I went on this trip the week of my birthday, which is July 31, with my parents and my two sisters. My second trip to California was an unforgettable experience that was important due to all of the locations I got to visit, all of the knowledge I now have from this trip, and all of the memories I made with my family.
The sounds of the city penetrated the walls of the cab as we drove through the streets of Manhattan. I could hardly wait to partake in the action that was happening outside. The buildings themselves were an amazing site to behold. The buildings took on personalities of their own. Each building was bigger and more graceful than the next. When lights were added to the mix it was a dazzling combination. The city itself felt like a great big hug, and I felt overwhelmed by its power. The city allowed me to become part of it just like many others many years ago who immigrated to this awesome city. As I was looking out of the cab I finally got to see in person the sight of all sights; Times Square. The main juncture of
When you mention New York to anyone, they automatically think about Times Square. This beautiful place with skyscrapers, Central Park, and a unique transportation system. However, if you were to ask me what I think about New York; I believe the skyscrapers block the sun, Central park is just a regular park for dogs, and the subway trains rarely run consistently especially in the mornings. I have lived in New York for 18 years, and I have yet to understand what everyone likes about the “ Big Red Apple.”
