Personal Narrative: A Career As A Liberal Arts Education

Before I became interested in Spelman college, I knew the type of education that I wanted to receive. I wanted an education that would cater to my many endeavors. I wanted to learn wholly, passionately and creatively. During NSO, when Dr. Burnett spoke, I realized receiving a liberal arts education is more than learning it is an act of resilience, and an act of courage.
As an Historically Black College Spelman is imbued to care for the entire student. The urgency to nurture the black student is a challenge in itself. The lack of representation of black peoples significance in history obscures the vision of ones self-importance. I always desired to learn the most I can in various subjects. My goals in life are vast and strikingly different. Receiving an education that would limit my pursuits to one career path is not my ideal education. Receiving a liberal arts education challenges me to think critically, express my ideas both spoken and authored. Those skills can be applied to every career path I can imagine. My plans include becoming a renowned blogger, lawyer and eventually publisher. For example: one of my short goals is to improve my writing skills, at Spelman I have seen the importance of writing thus far. Spelman incorporates writing across the curriculum. Spelman encourages this experience. Whether through African Diaspora and the World, the push to study abroad or the Computer Science requirement, Spelman hopes to expands its student’s world view. My ultimate goal is to learn as much as possible. Dr. Burnett reiterates the end result of a Spelman education:
“The informed person—specifically, the informed Spelman woman—seeks education constantly and makes decisions useful to humankind, based upon facts, information, and context. The uninformed person simply observes or uses fact and information to very limited, often distorted ends.”
