Why I Want To Become An Anesthesiologist

Working in medicine has a certain appeal to it. The jobs are fast-paced and offer variability. While there are so many different positions, anesthesiologists are a key member in any medical setting. Anesthesiology is defined as, “the branch of medicine concerned with anesthesia and anesthetics” (Merriam-Webster). Anesthesiologists like to joke that they put people to sleep for a living, which is true, but there is so much more to anesthesiology. Being an anesthesiologist is a very rewarding job that offers high pay, flexibility, and intellectual stimulation.

There is one important decision you must make before deciding to become an anesthesiologist: Do you want to become a physician? Medical school is designed to give students the widest range of choices, rotating them through all the different areas of medicine. Some medical students find that they are drawn to anesthesiology because of its intense doctor patient relationships combined with cutting edge technology in a fast paced environment. Anesthesiologists' training overlaps into internal medicine, critical care, obstetrics and pain medicine, while dealing with emergency cases, organ transplants and all types of surgeries.

Nurse Anesthetist has been providing anesthesia to patients in the United States for more than 150 years. In the year 1840 the anesthetic qualities of drugs were demonstrated in the country. Ether, chloroform, nitrous oxide is some chemicals who helped nurses and doctors in conducting a modern surgical procedure. Florence Nightingale was a well known nurse because of her work in the Crimean War during the late 1850s, that ushered in the advent of professional nursing. I was never a kid that knew who I would become when I grow up. My interests ranged from wanting to become an interior designer to having a strong desire of becoming a pilot. I was often surrounded by healthcare professionals but I never imagined myself striving to become one. A person would desire to become an anesthesiologist because there is a high standard of excellence due to a low percentage of doctors in this special field, not to mention the high salary. This occupation benefits the doctor through a feeling of personal gratification while receiving a great education. The community benefits through his or her help relieving the pain accompanied by surgery. Becoming an anesthesiologist involves extensive education and training, while also having many requirements and a good salary range.

While the pain is fresh and the glory is sweet, I decided to write this article about my experience running the marathon and how in my opinion, it metaphorically correlates the beginning and the diurnal responsibility of my profession as a Surgical Technologist.

Choosing my career was not an easy choice but becoming a Medical Assistant would be my “foot in the door” to becoming a nurse. I started Alaska Career College in fall 2014 to become a Phlebotomist. I thought that with my experience as a medical receptionist, I can further my career as a medical assistant rather than a phlebotomist. Anesthesiologist are medical doctors that use special drugs and gases called anesthetics, to keep patients pain free during surgery (Career Cruising). You may ask why people would want to do this job. Some anesthesiologist enjoy listening and talking to patients and love to be able to take care of people and help them get better. Becoming an anesthesiologist contains a strong education and being super experienced and this is what makes it such an important job.

There are many tasks and duties an Anesthesiologist has on a daily basis. Ohiomeansjobs says that Anesthesiologist watch patients before, during, and after anesthesia and counteract adverse reactions. They also position patients on the operating table to maximize patient comfort, and surgical accessibility. According to Ohiomeansjobs, Anesthesiologist diagnose illness by using tests, reports, and examinations. They also instruct individuals and groups on ways to preserve health and prevent disease. Their main job is to place the patient in a state of controlled unconsciousness, or “General Anesthesia.” As you can see, Anesthesiologist have many responsibilities on the job.

As my career, I chose to become an Anesthesiologist. An Anesthesiologist monitors the patients before and after anesthesia, records type and amount of anesthesia, examines patient, and obtains medical history. They also order laboratory test, x-rays, and other diagnostic procedures.

What do anesthesiologist do? An anesthesiologist will insert general or local anesthetic into the patients body. During the surgeon does its work the anesthesiologist will be monitoring the body's temperature, blood pressure, and the patients oxygen level. The anesthesiologist also have a nurse at his/her side. The anesthesiologist nurse will take care of the patient after and before the surgery. She will take care that the anesthetic didn't do damage to the patient and if the patient will wake up from the surgery. An anesthesiologist needs to complete his/her bachelor's degree, then he/she needs 4 more years leading to have a degree in medicine when your done receiving your medicine degree you have to wait 4

In the healthcare field there are a multiple amount of professions. These professions vary greatly in duties, requirements, salary and more. One of these many health professions, anesthesiologists, will be reviewed over the educational status required for the position, the profession’s role and function in society, and the workforce trends.

Since the beginning of September I have been an Anesthesia Technologist in the OR at Stony Brook Medical Center. I am currently in my first rotation at the ambulatory surgical center, but I will soon return to the main OR for my spine, cardiac, ortho, Peds, ob/GYN rotations. My job as an intern is to assist the anesthesia team with setting up the anesthesia machines, checking and/or troubleshooting the machines prior to each case, setting up IVs, and helping with inbutation and extubation among other things. I am in the OR from around 6 AM until 2:30 PM. When I am not in the OR I work as a home health aide for my great grandmother. My goal is to help restore so motility in her hips since she is recovering from hip surgery after falling while
