Recognize Nieves? No? Okay, how about Zacatecas? Still not ringing a bell? Okay, okay, Mexico? Yeah, I knew you’d know that one. Nieves, Zacatecas is within the Mexico borders. A humble place where I was born. Several circumstances started evolving where I was raised. And just like any other parents, mine got concerned which later resulted of us relocating to a safer environment. A place where death would visit frequently wasn’t a good place for a 1 year old kid. A town where the word trust was unknown. Leading to my parents decision of following the american dream.

Sonia Sanchez taught me that it’s possible to not let my pain hold me from being the best that I can be. She taught me to take my past full of pain, make it great and use the talents that I have now to change this planet and become a creator of social values. I learned to have an unshakeable strength, a persevering courage and to be a fighter. I learned that I am capable of achieving the greatest things if I put my mind to it. How well I do is in my hands not in a past that can drag me down. Just like Sonia asked her teacher if she had any talent, and the teacher answered saying: “Yes, you have talent, now let’s see whether you are going to do anything with it”. She answered to the call and I am determined to answer the call too. She changed
To begin, on May 15, 2017 I interviewed Maria Mojica about what it means to be American to her. Also, Maria Mojica, mother of 2, felt the necessity to describe that being American means that you acquire specific rights only accessible in this country. Since her mother, Guillermina Diaz, gave birth to her in Guerrero, Mexico and raised her in Anaheim, California, Maria was aware of the drastic differences between Mexico and America. Furthermore, she captured the idea that her life would ameliorate and that she could become much more successful in America versus Mexico. Although she believes that America is unsatisfactory due to more crime and violence, she declares that America has progressed in the aspect that America has grown economically
I have danced with two different groups and I sang alto for a short time with a quartet of girls. We covered a lot of other artist songs along with writing a few of our own. Our group name was K4 which stood for Kennett Four, we all attended Kennett High School in Kennett Square, PA. We all live in separate parts of the country now, but we still keep in touch. I carry that into the work I do now. I enjoy putting things together and
Every year, a few days before Christmas break, my Spanish teacher hosts a Christmas party for all of the faculty. The students in his Spanish four class are responsible for preparing Hispanic influenced cuisine. However, the whole fiesta is coordinated by those brave enough to venture into AP Spanish. Although I’m in the level four course, my teacher assigned me as the chief organizer and décor extraordinaire. We only had four weeks to pull everything together so time was of the essence. By infusing a lot of positive energy and publicity about the occasion, we managed to spread the news and excitement among the faculty. Despite a few challenges with communication and organization, we managed to pull it off with great success. The teachers
“Tienes tijeras?” asked a young girl. Not understanding what she had said, I asked her what she needed in English, but she looked back at me with eyes full of confusion. A simple question from one young girl asking for scissors had made me nervous and completely freeze in the moment. Through this, interacting with the children worried me because of the language barrier which would make it twice as hard as interacting with the children at home.
I used to live in Mexico, during my childhood, with my mom and my older brother Jesús where I had a German Shepherd named Camperino. This dog would take care of my older brother and me wherever we were. Later my Nana Elsa had bought us tickets to “ El Circo de Los Hermanos Vasquez” one night, which was my favourite circus. After that I fed Camperino his food and got ready for the circus. As my Nana got us all in her gray chevy car to head out, she told us to lock the gate of the house, but I believed it wasn’t necessary. Leaving without locking the gate or thinking about the safety of Camperino was my biggest mistake.
I have scorned many foes and friends. As thy name, Fortunato, brought upon glory among mankind. I’ve even received respect by the most honorable people, but there are some that dread my living existence. Tonight, it’s time to forget all of this. My dear friend, Montresor, has invited me over to his mansion. I am intrigued by what Montresor has to offer me.
It is a very complex world to live in without language. One’s ideas, thoughts, and emotions can all be present, however, unable to be expressed. This is the world I imagined for my grandfather when he first immigrated to the United States with my grandmother and their four children. He raised his own children to know Spanish in hopes that his future grandchildren would also be involved in their Dominican ancestry. Although, when I am speaking the same words and sentences that my mother, father, sister and cousins do, they come out misarranged and sloppy. This was because I never truly learned how to speak Spanish.
In the past year, I have had to take up responsibilities just like Esperanza, I am trying to prove that I have responsibility to my mom so she can trust me to do things by myself. Whenever I get home the first thing I do when I get into the house is lock the door behind me, the second thing I do is let my dogs outside and come back later to get them inside, if the my dogs are low on food I will try and feed them.

Three. That is the number of women who have helped me to be who I am today. A nurturer, a teacher, and a mentor. The nurturer taught me how to work hard. The teacher made me realize I could be a healer; a doctor. The mentor helped me realize I enjoy research. Because of those women, I know that I am a strong candidate for this particular PREP program. Because will work hard, and because I have so much to learn and to give. I know I want to do research in the biomedical field. I also know that I cannot do it alone.
