Coming to college is hard. You have to keep your grades up through 13 years of public education. You also should obtain a car to get from point A to point B. This also requires having a job to keep the car fueled and money in your pocket to live off of. Motivation is also a tricky thing to pin down. It seems to appear when you don’t need it, and then just vanish when you need it the most. And organizational skills, what are those? These are some of the challenges I faced when deciding to go to college. One of the first things I needed before starting college was a car. If you can’t get to school, not much learning is going to happen. I got lucky my grandparents had an older car they didn’t use. So, this became my trusty steed. But what is a steed without fuel? To keep it gassed and ready to go, I had to have employment. But with my employment, came the need to balance my schedule with school. My employer agreed with me that my education was more important, and we made it work. The challenge then was to stay as motivated in my learning as I was at my job. …show more content…
I have never failed any classes, but have never been a good student. Most of this was due to my lack of motivation when it mattered. If I was interested in the subject, I generally did well in it, because I was motivated. If I wasn’t, I skimmed by in the class. One thing I have realized is that you can’t do that in college. You either get your work done or you don’t, it’s that simple. Keeping myself motivated to do assignments is probably the single most challenging thing about coming to college. But when I get work done, I also have to make sure not to lose
I began to fall behind and continued to stay behind in two of my classes. I started to skip many assignments because I did not manage my time well. My goal wasn’t reinforced because I didn’t read it before making a choice or evening trying to remember it. I realized that I was letting myself down and I wasn’t doing what I needed to do and that all my grades were slipping. I work twelve hour shifts that cause me to become very tired. I began to correct myself by staying up after I got off work and I made myself do two to three assignments before I was allowed to go to sleep. By staying awake after work I got to study more and with a clearer mind understood better, and gave myself a treat by relaxing

Throughout High School I thought I was proficient in reading and writing in my English classes, from freshman year to senior year English classes were easy and felt I could transition my confidence to community college after graduation until I took the English assessment exam and failed in the spring of 2012. Failing my entrance exam was devastating and I refused to accept my results, I waited two academic year before I can appeal to retest my English entrance exam and after weeks of waiting I was approved to retest. After I retest the results were the same, I was placed in remedial English not only was I devastated again but I personally felt worthless. I did not know what was wrong with my reading and writing but I had no choice to enroll
Entering community college with little programming experience, I was eager to learn. I registered for my first programming class excited, with a fresh mind. My professor introduced the class to our first program, "Hello World." Instantly, I was hooked. As I uncovered the complexities of problem-solving and the importance of proper syntax, my love grew stronger. Eventually, with experience in C++ and JAVA, another professor presented a life changing opportunity to me.
After recently graduating from Fullerton College with two associate degrees in psychology, I could have not accomplished this goal all by myself without the proper guidance that I received from EOPS and FYSI at the time. These programs were established to support former foster youth at Fullerton College in their education as long as they met all the conditions for each semester. As a result, this was valuable for me during my time as a community college student, allowing me to guarantee that I would finish all my requirements on time to transfer to a good university, and becoming more involved with the campus each semester. That being said, this is one of the main reasons as to why I am applying to your program, so I could receive the support
Going into college, I knew that there will be an abundance of life lessons learned, but I did not ken that I would be able to absorb so much in such a short duration. This past year in college, I gained vital skills and grew stronger mentally. College is a place where everyone learns from their failures and successes, and with that, there are numerous things to learn from that. My experiences in college edified me how to work with others, communicate with professionals efficaciously, and make perdurable relationships. In addition, being away from home and living in an unfamiliar environment without my family availed me to become independent. Surviving on my own, I learned to make my bed, cook, do laundry, clean up after myself, and more. College taught me skills beyond the classroom, and it withal a leeway to becoming independent away
I believe I could really be a good asset to your school. I can really be a good student if I really tried. Since my career really depends on college, I will try my absolute best to be the best I really can be. Getting into to College is a really big dream, and if I don’t do well in college, there goes my career choice. So choosing, me is a good idea.
Taking classes at Mercer County Community College while I am in high school was another challenge for me during my process of graduating early. I have no free time to do anything because Tuesdays and Thursdays are the days of my class. I do my work for the class on time while doing my high school work as well. I was taking on a lot but every second my time I spend doing something useful I was gaining knowledge. Everything I did was for a reason and I will be successful because I was doing exactly what God has planned for me. I overcame this challenge by pushing on non stop, I took it little by little till I got one thing out the way to another. God and my ambition is what keeps me driven, I was given a gift that I am willing to find by doing all it takes. You can not be lazy or procrastinate, that is something I did not do, and that is why I am succeeding. No one can possibly fathom on how far I will go to achieve what I deserve I will knock out every challenge that comes my way. Another thing that made me overcome my challenge was the famous quote by Muhammad Ali “Float like a butterfly, sting like a
Transitioning into college can be a difficult time for many people. Because of the fact that college is so distinctly dissimilar to high school, students may not cope well with changing lifestyles. For me personally, though, I look forward to the conversion from high school into college. I am always open to different opportunities with respect to advancing my education into secondary education. So changing the way of operating for me should not be all too hard for me because of how well I have done so in the past.
Returning to school is a big step and an even bigger decision. So many things have thrown me off in going to college. Between deaths, finances, and work, I never thought about having the time for it. I have put off college for almost 2 years now, which is entirely too long for me. I have decided to go to college at this juncture in my life because of personal, emotional reasons, and to better my education.
WEll, I guess this is the beginning; the beginning of a new journey, a new life, a new me--hopefully.
A family sitting around a dinner table, refugees being placed into healthy environments, a house full of family and friends, these are all images I conjure up when pondering my future. I wish to begin my journey to obtaining this fantasy by pursuing college. College represents an extremely important piece to my future and to get there, I must work extra hard. I see myself attending a University to attain a masters degree in global studies. To be able to get to that point I must reach out and ask for help, the reason for applying for scholarships. After college I would like to locate a job somewhere in the south, such as Tennessee. Once I've had a few years of settling into my career, I enjoy the idea of starting a family. Yes, this does involve
As each day comes closer to the start of college, the question becomes how will I survive the 4 years of college? How will I avoid being part of those who drop out? How will I pay my gap? How will I pay my college books, fees, etc.
One sunny day many years ago in the parking lot of Husson University a car comes to a sudden stop. The door swings opens and out steps a young woman named, Heather Patten. It’s the first day of college and she can feel the butterflies franticly swarming around in her stomach. “Husson University is a big place especially if you don’t know anyone there and have no clue where your classes are.” Eventually, like any place, Heather got used to the many buildings and huge campus. She was at a great place in her life, finally she was own her own. She graduated high school 10th out of her class, and got her wish to go to a college close to home.
It is the dream of everyone to join college with the hope of getting a better tomorrow and a foundation for them to make it in life. However, this may not be the case with some students as this dream may turn into a nightmare. This is because many students fail to go through or others even fail simply because they have not prepared enough; not just academically but also on the personal side.
