I was once told that in order to figure out how to become who you're supposed to be you have to experience tragedy and hardship. This may aid the process and even change the outcome, but self- reflection is what changes us. Socrates, when on trial for impiety and corrupting the youth, said, "The unexamined life is not worth living", meaning that without self-reflection life is stagnated and prevented from reaching its full potential.

From the time that I was very young the idea of identity confused me. I couldn't tell if it was who I was or who I would one day become. I first performed Birdy's version of Skinny Love and moved on to artists like Adele, Coldplay, and Elvis.
I added ukulele to my list of musical talents two years ago when I was in
Keller's production of Wizard of Oz. I picked up the instrument in the changing room as a joke and began playing it. To everyone's amazement I had learned the beginning of Somewhere Over the Rainbow by watching people practice it.

Poetry and music have worked hand in hand to encourage self-reflection and provide an avenue of self discovery. They showed me the way to have a life that was truly worth living. Not only has my writing and my music sparked change and thought in myself, but it has affected others. My younger sister began playing ukulele shortly after me, my friends began asking advice on writing poetry.

I could have talked about hardship and tragedy, but they do not make me who I am. I can reflect on those events, the feelings, and even wish to take it back, but it is what I chose to do with my hurt and my trials that made me who I am.
