I’m a Mormon. I Believe in marriage in the LDS Temple. I Believe I pay 10 percent of my earnings to the church also known as tithing. I Believe in being that I must get baptized at the age of 8, but if you were converted to the church, you can be older. I Believe that I am a Latter day saint of the church of Jesus Christ, but there is a lot of history to us, to make us form who we are today. For example, Brigham Young. He is one of the most important people to us. He helped make “The Book of Mormon.” He was also a apostle, he was also a prophet, a dad, a husband, and a bishop. But most importantly, he traveled from Salt Lake City, Utah, to all over NM, to Nauvoo, Illinois. He brought many Mormons, to basically make the city of Nauvoo, they …show more content…
Where John Young and Abigail Howe met and got married. So Abigail turned to Abigail Howe Young. A while after there marriage in 1801, Abigail had Brigham Young, he didn't have a middle name. Anyway when he was about 3 or 4 his family needed to move because of wanting another child, so they moved to the beautiful and wondrous Salt Lake City, Utah. There he grew and had more and more responsibility, and as he grew older and smarter he started a job. He became a carpenter and painter. He started in 1817. A couple of years later, he found the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and was baptized 1832, and was ordained as an apostle in 1835. Him and Joseph Smith were really good friends and when a mob came after him, Joseph Smith, and his brother Hyrum Smith. They cornered them in a room, and shot, Sadly Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum were killed, in 1844. Then Brigham Young was chosen as a prophet, a couple of weeks later and continued until death in 1877. This is the important part, in 1852 he was chosen to be the leader of the Illinois travel. He took over 16,000 Mormon from Salt Lake City to All over NM to Nauvoo, Illinois all on foot. They basically built Nauvoo, after that he returned to Salt Lake City, and took on his duties as a prophet until death in 1877. Now that we got though all the facts, I think I should tell you the story in detail, almost like a story
People and religion are a part of everyday life. The world is sure to be empty without the existence of God’s creation. When people and religion are viewed as different, the history, beliefs, and practice are formed unrealistically by outsider, more so than an insider. In an interview with a LDS, the author attempts to write and summarize a Mormon‘s journey through life with God and others.
Mormonism is a religion created by Joseph Smith on April 6, 1830(The Mormon Trail), its believers are referred to as Mormons and practice the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS Church) (The Mormon Trail). Smith believed himself to be a prophet destined to “restore the original pure church the Christians in the Book of Mormon had created (Manifest Destiny and Westward Expansion).” However, he was killed by a mob in Illinois but was replaced by his successor, Brigham Young. Their beliefs include a particular set of deity, afterlife, and they practice polygamy, which is one of the reasons the Mormons sought religious freedom.
Mormonism was founded in the 1820s’ by Joseph Smith. Smith, wanting to expand his religious following migrated to Illinois where he established a settlement that included a temple of worship and a village (Green 57). In Illinois the Mormon peoples’ were met with threats, violence, and occasionally they were even killed. This was the case for their leader Joseph Smith; Smith was met with disgust from non-mormons when he attempted to run for presidency and his church riddled with scandal when the word of polygamy got out. With his tarnished reputation, Smith was ultimately murdered by an outraged mob, who then threatened other Mormons that if they did not leave they would be met with the same fate (Mormons into the West). With that warning, the Mormons picked a new leader, Brigham Young, who wanted to flee the American Border. Young set for travel with his new followers to the Great Salt Lake, which at the time was located in Mexico.
Brigham Young was born on June 1, 1801, in Whitingham Vermont. Even as a young boy, Brigham always wanted to know the truth. He enjoyed learning and finding out new things. In 1830, a man named Joseph Smith, declared the new church, to be named: “The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints”. This was, and is, the church of Heavenly Father, our God, and his Son
I go to Mt. Zion Baptist Church. I’m on the praise team and today, we are having an affable concert. We are inviting all churches in Albany and surrounding towns to come and revere with us. My sister is also on the praise team. She is having an indolence attitude. She says she doesn’t want to go even though she committed to earlier this month. As her sister and captain of the pre team, I encouraged her to come along. The whole way to the church she was being desecrate.
To some it may even be a backhanded jab, but to me it is It’s literally who I am. The idea of waking up at 5 am every weekday morning for religious study classes would typically make high schoolers cringe. For me studying and discussing the scriptures every morning kick starts each day with a sense of fulfillment and purpose; shaping and guiding me as I go through a day filled with choices and decisions. For others Sunday is just one extra day of the week. For me Sunday is a special day that revolves around the gospel, spending time with family and serving others less fortunate than me. To the outside being Mormon may seem like a hassle filled with only restrictions and rules, but I don’t see it this way. To me it truly represents who I am and what has shaped me into the person I am
The Mormon Church teaches that technology is a necessary evil. They teach that, while vital for communication and occupations, cell phones and the internet posses a massive destructive capability and, thus, their use should be limited. Mormons view the destruction as ethical or religious: stumbling onto pornography or an "anti-Mormon" website. I have somewhat adopted the overarching viewpoint, but with different justifications. I went a week without screens over my freshman year, and realized a sense of clarity comparable to when I first got contacts; in both instances I gained an appreciation for previously overlooked details. Crisp breezes, real conversations, environmental exploration, these treasures were previously muddled down by constant
Mormonism began with a man named Joseph Smith. He was born on December 23, 1805 in Sharon, Vermont. His family moved to Palmyra, New York where Smith was exposed to a traveling magician who claimed he could find treasure using seer stones; Smith spent much time with this magician while he was looking for treasure. He eventually began to use the peep stones himself, which would later help him start Mormonism.
This led to many women and children working in the factories with poor working conditions and low wages. During this time, many people were uneducated and had large unpaid debt that sent many adults to prison, leaving their children to work in factories, rather than attending school. Also these people did not have any representation in law because state legislatures generally elected the state governors and direct voting was almost unheard of. (R. Kauffman and R.W. Kauffman 5). These stressful and poor working conditions as well as a lack of widespread education caused an increase in religious sects to appear, such as the Zoarites and the “come-outers.” All of the confusion and rise of different religious sects paved the way for Mormonism to be founded. Many people were searching for the right set of beliefs that would instruct them in the way of salvation. Therefore, this made it easier for Joseph Smith’s statements to be accepted and gain followers because people were desperate to find something that would satisfy their deep need for peace and
On April 6, 1980, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (aka the Mormon Church) was founded. [It is interesting to note that according to Mormon doctrine (Doctrine and Covenants 20:1), April 6 is the birthday of Jesus Christ.] 10 years prior to this event, in 1820, fourteen-year-old Joseph Smith
The story of its creation and Joseph Smith is an example myth. The history of the religion is mythic, Mormons believe that the hebrew societies of the Lamanites and Nephites lived in North America(Lamanites). The Lamanites rejected the teachings of the gospel until the birth of Jesus Christ, however, two hundred years after Christ visited North America the two factions became wicked and the Nephites wiped out the Lamanites in war(Lamanites). The angel Moroni is believed to be the last Nephite, he wrote the plates of Mormon in the hopes someone would find them and preach Nephite values(Moroni, Son of Mormon). The faith is heavily influenced by
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is the Mormon church. The website, Mormon.org, has a home page that focusses on education and creating an environment for Mormon followers to meet people of the same faith. Easily accessible from the home page is a link to learn more about the Mormon religion. Clicking on the link pulls up a new page with more links. Through these links, the site aims to inform the visitor about what Mormons believe, what books and texts they follow, and the founding of the religion and church. Each link has title followed by a brief description. For instance, the link “Jesus Christ, Our Savior” is followed by the text, “Jesus Christ is the Son of God and the (ours and yours) Savior of the world. His life and
When the U.S.A. finally had control of Utah they made Brigham Young the governor of it because they didn't want any more problems. As the leader of the Mormons Brigham Young added the doctrine of Polygamy, which is when you have more than one wife at a time. He supported this new doctrine by saying that Joseph Smith, the former leader, had a revelation of this doctrine but never put it in practice. After he accomplished everything thing else he wanted more and soon he claimed himself as a god. He believed that when he died he would have his own planet; he and his household would inhabit this new planet and would become the gods or rulers of it.
During my time at LDS Business College, I studied various courses from Accounting and to Religion. Throughout the different courses that I took, I found out a lot about myself and my identity. I always dreamed to be a Network Developer, managing databases and program networks was what I thought would be the ideal career for me. But at LDS Business College, I met a lot of different people; people with different culture, background, interest, motives, opinions, and who chose different career paths. Even though we were different in a lot of ways, we were all heading towards the same direction and it was towards success. I would like to attend Brigham Young University because I truly believe that BYU has the education that I need. I am not saying
Since my youth, I had been an active member of a religious tradition that emphasized salvation by works— I grew up in the Catholic Church, but I went only because mom said to. I had more of an agnostic view of God -- I believed in God, but I didn’t try to learn about Jesus. I didn’t know the truth about Him.
