On a cold Thursday morning, school was in session but I was starting on my way to Lake Winnibigoshish. I was going up there with my five foot nine, one hundred forty pound dad and my five foot nine, two hundred thirty pound neighbor. We stopped in at the Senior Center for some donuts, and went to Holiday Gas Station for some coffee and a cold drink. We started on 371 heading towards Brainerd/Baxter area going through Fort Ripley and Crow Wing going to Baxter. We stopped in at Fleet Farm to get some gear, and we also stopped in at S & W Bait and Tackle to get some bait for the trip. After we came out of Baxter, we went through Nisswa passing many different kinds and shapes of lakes with beautiful views. When we got to Pequot Lakes, the view …show more content…
We also went through Jenkins, Wilson, Pine River, Backus, and Powers before we got to the small town of Hackensack were we stopped for a little break and fill up on gas. We keep going up 371 until we got to the intersection of 371 and 200, right next to the Northern Lights Casino, were we took a right going on 200. Going on 200, we went by Turtle Lake and kept on going past Leech Lake until we got to 84 going north. We took a left on 84 going north towards lake Winnibigoshish. We passed through Federal Dam were there was a lot of boaters docked and even more docking up to get in and out of Leech Lake. Still going north, we came to Bena at the intersection of 84 and 2. Going right at the intersection for about one to one and a half miles till we took a left on Winnie Dam Rd NE. On that road, there are many old redwood pines and also a lot of old white pines, there are also a bunch of logging caused by a bad wind storm that came though that knocked …show more content…
"He's almost off but I got him though," I said shaking. "Sweet!, he's bigger than we thought," yelled my dad with excitement. I pulled in a twenty three inch walleye on a rattle reel with weak six pond test and a small flathead minnow. We took a lot of photos and we had to let it go because it was in the slot size. We looked at the camera to see if there were any more walleye but there wasn't any. All that was down there was the whole school of perch and a few small northern ranging from about fifteen to twenty inches long. We caught about a five gallon bucket full of perch throughout the three days that we were there. We also caught about three or four nice northerns ranging from twenty five to thirty inches long. The walleye that. Caught in the beginning was the only one that we caught the whole weekend that we were up. Most of the other people in the other houses were catching plenty of walleye, but us of course were not catching anymore. On the final day we were there, we packed up early in the morning and left the house at about noon. We stopped into the bar to check out and played some pool before we left. We had to have played at least ten games of
We over around the lake a lot because how we weren't really hardly getting any bites on our fishing pools. And I had only gotten one bite and when I pulled it in the fish was only a little bit bigger than an orange. But it was
They have been trying to restore the walleye population by making it so that citizens can only keep 1 fish which is mostly in the winter and you never know how many people are keeping when they are in their fish house or they make it catch and release in the summer and sometimes close it to walleye. So I believe that the netting isn't the only reason that the walleye numbers have been declining but I don't think that it helps the numbers very much. I believe that the netting while the walleye are spawning should either be stopped or they should make them wait until the walleye are towards the end of their spawning and that the DNR should enforce
Smallmouths have both external fertilization and external development. Feeding for smallmouth tops when the temperature is around 78 degrees and starts to slow down once the temperature goes below 40 degrees. The male always guards the eggs and the babies which are known as fry. The spawning usually occurs in April or May unless the temperature stays cold than it can be delayed. The first person to describe a smallmouth bass was Lacepede is 1802. The fry hatch out of their eggs in about a week and then continue to develop for another week. Young smallmouths are fed upon by yellow perch, Northern pike or muskellunge. Bigger bass are only eaten by northern pike, musky but the main predators of smallmouth bass are humans. The lifespan in the wild is normally about seven years, but some will live up to 20 years. In captivity the average age is ten years. When the young hatch out of their eggs they are about 0.2 inches long, very easy prey for a variety of animals. Multiple females will spawn in the nest of one male and an individual female will spawn in more than one. Smallmouth dance and bite each other, this is their mating ritual. In New York the record smallmouth was 8 pounds, 4 ounces caught out of Lake Erie on 6/4/1995 by Andrew C Kartesz. Smallmouth bass are beginning to destroy Brooke trout fisheries and Atlantic salmon fisheries. The meat of a smallmouth is very firm and good tasting so many people catch the fish not only for the fun of the
No other place in the world offers the diversity of angling experiences that Washington does, whether it’s you are from the bank or from a boat your chances of catching a salmon is high. Beginning salmon anglers will want to focus on items at the top of the menu bar, while experienced anglers will find many useful tools closer to the bottom of the menu bar. Salmon have been recorded to weigh up to 100 pounds! The 68-year-old Les Anderson, who is part-owner of Peninsula Ford, hooked what is officially a 97 1/4-pounder, but many envious anglers realized the monster might have topped the elusive 100-pound mark when it was fresh out of the water. The biggest recorded king salmon caught by any means in Alaska was a 126-pound fish caught in a trap near Petersburg in 1949. Now the columbia river does get some of these “June Hogs” but nothing like up in the kenai river in alaska. There has been multiple fish caught out of the columbia and its tributaries have pulled out monsters from 65 pounds and
Fishing guide Danny Layne reports from Lake Don Pedro that the early season trout bite has picked up in areas such as Fleming Bay and Middle Bay from the surface down to 30 feet with flasher/worm combos and Uncle Larry's spinners. King salmon are down to 60 to 80 feet and a few kokane are turning up at the 40 foot level with standard kokanee gear. At Lake Tulloch, Layne reports rainbows are showing near the mouth of Black Creek with small shad pattern lures behind a dodger. A few kokanee were found in the Green Springs area at around 40 feet deep.
The time I got a 23 in 5 1/2 lb Largemouth Bass in Florida was awesome. When the Bass first struck my frog lure it jumped into the air and splashed down into the water. It fought very hard and tangled the line around the lily pad stems. All I could hear was my line being pulled out by the fish. I yelled at all my family to get outside. When they got out I was struggling to to get the fish out of the weeds. I eventually worked it out of the weeds and into clear water. My grandma was yelling because of how big it was. My dad got in the water and lifted it out. We filled a tote with water and put it in. It barely fit! I named it “Tank” because of how hard it hit my lure. We kept it in the tote until we found someone that could make a replica
Trail was complete, even as almost annual improvements were made in the form of bridges, cutoffs, ferries, and roads, which made the trip faster and safer. From various starting points in Iowa, Missouri, or Nebraska Territory, the routes converged along the lower Platte River Valley near Fort Kearny, Nebraska Territory and led to rich farmlands west of the Rocky Mountains.
When it is in summer and later months, its best to use some attractive baits. The reason would be the murky waters which walleye thrive in. Try a fluorescent yellow or green lure. Run it across the bottom with perhaps a pickerel rig. A pickerel rig is designed to allow a weight to drag the bottom and 2 hooks (or more) come of the main line. I’ve had lots of success with leeches and leech products (fake leech – with smell) catching walleye. But this only works if they are hungry, as they are hard to see. I would be more inclined to use something colorful.
All across South Dakota the limit is four fish a day and only one out of the four can be over twenty inches and the rest must be over fifteen inches until July 1. Walleye population goes up and down. The average size changes every year. This year’s average size is 14.7 inches in Lake Oahe. The reports say that fishing in early June is the best time to go
Phew, a short breather was needed along the gas cut line before we proceeded towards zone 2. Validating our coordinates with the map that was provided to us, we had found ourselves drifting further west than we had anticipated, closer to Oviatt Road than expected. Back to business on the grassy paths of the Upper Pasture, alongside of the Stables and down into the Wild Ravine we went. Of all the diverse areas on the property, the Wild Ravine section was my favorite. You can truly get the feeling of being far away from civilization here. Down the hill we explored the beautiful Lower Lake. Back into the woods and heading towards the direction of the parking lot we advanced.
The fishing here and the surrounding states is awesome. The Mane fish are Walleye, Perch, and bass. The state record Largemouth bass is 9 pounds. The state record walleye is 16 pounds.
When you go to a new place there is always that excitement of what’s out there. Where do the different trails go. At Dawes there are many different trails and pathways to take. This place is huge you can follow the paths that they make or you can make your own. That's my favorite thing to do. I always love to find my own new things and make my own favorite paths. The Woodlands at Dawes is such a amazing but yet spooky place to visit. In this area there is many native plants along the paths like the buttonbush, foamflower, wild geranium. What makes this place so spooky but intriguing is the cemetery that lies here. It is named one of the oldest cemeteries in Licking County and is stilled used my the Beard-Green Family to this day. Another site that seems to be a popular one to explore is The Arboretum East. The trails here are a lot me rough so a lot of times more adventurous hikers go for these. This beautiful place has a little bit of everything. Its trailers are usually about
We drove through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico to get to our first main destination, Sedona, Arizona. We were driving into
The rest of the ride was quiet with small talk here and there. I could have driven over here myself, but I always get a bad feeling while driving. After about an hour drive we finally made it to our destination, Camp Enfer. Camp Enfer was worn out beyond its years. Fortunately for the camp it was placed in the middle of a beautiful landscape. It was surrounded by gigantic pine trees. It had valleys that seem to go on forever. A lake that glistened in the sunshine. Hills that were greener than a Granny Smith apple picked on a sunny spring day.
Come evening time I decided to try a couple more swims, one of which I had avoided during daylight due to it being so shallow, I figured that any of the larger fish would be tight to the snags and overhanging bushes, the small gap between the opposite bank and these features provided enough room to roll some cheese
