On March 26, I visited my friend’s church called New life Christian center, in Durham.NC. It was going to be my first time going to a black church. I was excited to see if all the things that is usually said about their type of worship. Coming from a Jehovah Witness background, I knew everything from music and worship would be a bit different than what I’m used to. Growing up I wasn’t the most religious person. So every experience is usually a first for me.
They usually wake up around 7 and get dressed. They partake in this thing every sunday morning called “talking in tongues”. I never heard of it barely coming from a christianity background. I didn’t have to go to it because that was a closed event for only members that understood. Moving on to

When we sat down the preacher made a statement saying they were a bible believing church, so you need a bible and notebook. If you didn’t have one they’ll get you one. Starting the worship we went to Proverbs 1:5, “let the wise also hear and gain in learning, and the discerning acquired skill”, and he said listen with understanding. The preacher went on to saying that we need to hear and understand. He told us 2 things about hearing. The first one was hearing will determine what you will receive. He continued to repeat that every time you come to church you should read and learn the word of God. We went to Acts 19 and he screams “AMEN” and starts reading “while Apollos was in Corinth, Paul passed through the interior regions” and “we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit”. After reading that he continues to say that “what you hear is what you’ll receive” and made us repeat what he just said. The second important fact about hearing was, it drives out unbelief. He preached on how hearing will drive out wrong thinking, wrong hearing, and speaking against God. The preacher then said “A true pastor would want you to grow and increase in life learning. He then said “turn to your wise neighbor
They have rock bands in church and singing and all together a different type of preaching then I grew up knowing. I learned that there is different ways non-denominational churches handle things compared to that of other Christian faiths. It was very upbeat and lively throughout the entire sermon where compared to that of a LDS sacrament service being more
In my experience at first progressive Baptist Church I was very much out of my comfort zone because not only did I not feel as welcomed but it was a little awkward because of all the looks I was receiving. I felt I was not dressed as they were and felt as if I didn't fit in and right away I just didn't feel appropriate with my attire. While I was there I actually had people wanting to shake hands and asking me questions about me coming and there was one man who just stared at me and so it was uncomfortable and didn't know how to react. While I was there I started to notice that there is a little difference from the church I go to and the music was way different as well, everyone will talk back with amen or thank you Jesus. The difference
As the only white individual entering the church on Sunday I felt extremely out of place and very uncomfortable, at first. Upon entering the church, before I could even find a place to sit, the pastor came to welcome me and showed me a place to sit for the service. The pastor was very kind and so welcoming that my nervousness and worry started to vanish. Once I was seated and more people entered the church, I was treated as if I had always been there and was part of the group. Although I was the minority at the service I did feel very comfortable with my surroundings and with the people in attendance. The whole experience was very interesting and broadened my perspective on the African American culture.
The people there were very welcoming and kind. The shook every single person hand and greeted them genially when they walked in. As I sat down, there was a countdown till when it begins. There were seats all around and in the center they had a stage, where there were people preparing to sing. They began their ceremony exactly at 8:30 with singing 3 songs. When we sang, everyone stood up for respect. Followed by that, the pastor recited a prayer with everyone to make this week better than the last. He welcomed everyone, including the people who are new, and told them more about what they do at Kennedy Road Tabernacle Church. The priest then talked about the Provision of Vision from the bible. There was a sheet that was handed out so as you listen you fill in the blanks. ( I attached the sheet I completed) I thought this was very convenient because it makes you pay attention and have something to do other than sitting down. He was reading about the Provision of the Vision and relating it to financial difficulties and how God is always there for you. After, I talked to one priest to get a better background of Christianity. I related what he said to the reading of ‘Christianity’ we did earlier in September. When he spoke to me, he said that they believe in one god, but that includes the father, son, holy spirit, He said Jesus died for us on a cross for the sins of the
On Monday, I went to the local Crossroads Baptist Church, located at 850 Edwards Ferry Rd NE, Leesburg, VA. This was my first time experience as I am Hindu and my parents never exposed me to any churches. Dr. Kenneth K. Baldwin was the pastor at the time I went. Luckily, I got the chance to speak with him after the service. After our brief conclusion, I realized that he had a great vision for his church and is leading it to success through his passion. I sensed his passion for preaching and religious beliefs as they were evident during the service. Despite this being my first visit to a church, I learned a lot of valuable things about churches and Christianity.
After arriving in Tennessee, my parents were very adamant about getting plugged into a church. I was raised in church but up until then, I went because I was told to. Usually I had to count ceiling lights or people in pews to keep from falling asleep during sermons. We attended countless services, but it wasn’t until one special Sunday that we found Sand Ridge Baptist Church. Unbeknownst to me, it would change my life.
Church, temple, sanctuary, or the Lords’s house, these are just a few names that your average person might call the place you come to worship God, I have always called it home. The Church I have been attending, Memorial Baptist Church, which is also where I attend high school, I have been attending since I was the age of three years old. Moving to the area that my family lives in now, I do not believe is any accident. At the age of two years old, my father was stationed in Tennessee for the military. After passing away from brain cancer, my Mother moved my two older sisters and me to Killeen Texas, to be closer to her family. Memorial Baptist Church was the only church we have ever been members of since moving to Texas, it has always felt like
Black churches today are becoming more diverse, and a great place to worship for all people regardless of ethnicity. However, for some people of Caucasian decent it can still be confusing understanding the traditions of the Black church. Here is a brief guide to non-African Americans understand the church.
While we were approaching, I could hear them singing. I was so excited, my heart rated so fast. We went there. No cross, just a plain building and above the door a sign in big white letters “City Church Chicago”. We went in. I was speechless and I couldn’t keep my mouth closed. There were kids, young people, old people, colored people, white people. Everybody was there and everybody was accepted the way he/she is. That was my first time in a different church. They sang a song. It was mind blowing. I was holding my tears. After the song, pastor started preaching. I loved that the pastor was explaining bible quotes on real life situations, it was like an motivational speech. He ask us to stand up and sing a song with him. I didn’t know the lyrics, but that’s not the problem. They have karaoke! So we sang, it was amazing. I really enjoyed
And he owns the camp and he's' holding the A & E Science camp here.
I jumped at the opportunity to complete the extra credit assignment because of the topic. I have always wanted to attend an African American Baptist Church. I was raised Catholic in a predominantly white community and for the chance to experience something different was appealing. I’ve seen the stereotypes in movies and on TV about what an African American Baptist church looks like but I wanted to experience it myself. I wasn’t sure on what to expect but kept an open mind about the situation.
Holding these positions required me to attend and coordinate meetings with people from other states and local church. I was leading committees, create flyers, conducting meetings, planning events, services, and come up with a budget plan for the conferences. The budget plans include hotel accommodations, breakfast lunch and dinner expenses, and conference hall rentals. The budget plan could be anywhere from $500.00-$30,000 for the conference. We also planned other activities to keep the youth and young adults active while away from home attending the conferences. Monitoring the youth at night during the day making sure they are in the right place and following the guidelines for youth and young adults at a Christian conference.
Another part of the service that I did not get to witness was the actual baptizing part. In the English service they do not have a pool to baptize people in. They only baptize people in the Spanish service so I was not able to see this happen. The rest of the service was all about the preacher preaching. His sermon was not right out of the bible. He talked about real life situations that are related to what the bible talks about so I found it better to relate to what is going on in your life. It got pretty boring though when he kept on talking for around thirty to forty-five minutes. The whole service was around an hour and forty-five minutes to two hours.
In the last year I have seen Jesus Christ in many parts of my life but mostly in my time spent at the Brookwood Community, a community for people with mental disabilities. Philippians 2:4 says "Let each of you look not only to his own interest, but also the interest of others". This bible verse greatly explains our calling to serve others. God calls us to give our time in helping others. While at Brookwood, I played basketball, participated in chapel and many other activities that they held for their citizens. All the citizens at Brookwood each have unique talents, each of which amazed me, for example a man named Thomas was a excellent basketball player and all around athlete. Another thing that truly amazed me was the love for God that the
In my second field experience, I’d decided to go to a Baptist church. However, I did not come from a religious background. Although I am not completely in the dark when it comes to religion I have learn about different religion through friends and books. Therefore, I thought this would be a great opportunity to finally experience a service and put my ignorance aside. Meaning the assumption and expectation I had of church service. Furthermore, it provided me the opportunity to challenge myself and my own biases I have towards going to church. Once I went to church I was surprise to see so many black people, for the first time since I moved too Greensburg, I was actual able to see a room overflowing with individual who looked just like me, my first emotion was excitement and enjoy. Some of my expectation, was something I have learned from my mother. My mother always told me that “black people churches last longer”, with this in mind I was prepare to be there for a long time. However, to my surprise it did not last as long as I’d expected it to. My overall experience, was warming, peaceful and positive.
